its too much for a man of his limited ability

alonso, lucas or even momo (if he just sticks to tackling and playing it 5 yards) can play that holding role if asked aswell as masherano can

i would spend the 17 million on a top class winger or support striker instead

I'd say he's not worth it, had the scum not paid such astronomically dumb fees for Hargreaves and Carrick.

In that climate, Mascher is worth about £80m. :D

If Alonso was worth a £15 to 20million new contract, I am pretty sure Mascherano is worth £17million. £9million Transfer plus £8million contract. Sounds a bargain to me.

Are you sure that is all it is? 9m is fck all, the wages are something we are paying anyway.

Oops read the reply posts, still can't believe its 9m for a standard transfer.

We were awful today and everyone was culpable, players and manager. To have a forward line of Crouch, Voronin, and Kuyt is NEVER going to worry a defence, they are ALL average players, not fit for a top premiership side, infact without Torres i'd say we have the worst set of strikers of all the top 10, and that is Rafas fault. I still think Rafa is a top manager and cannot see an alternative who would have won us what he has, or improved our league form with the money he has had available, and in the time he has been manager. Lets remember we cannot blame him for the 18 year wait for the title. I do however have concerns over his blind spot where Kuyt is concerned, i understand Rafa knows a lot more about football than ALL of us, but i cannot see any reason to play him, he looks as though he has lost all confidence.

To all the usual knee jerk reactions following a poor result, i can only advocate patience. Rafas record speaks for itself, lets imagine a Club gets him in the summer how would their fans feel about Rafa Benitez??  2 la liga, 1 Uefa cup, 1 CL, 1 Fa cup, another CL final and whatever we might win this year, all in a period of 7 years, they will be popping the champagne corks, other than Mourinho who else compares?

For us to win the league was always going to very difficult, at times i had hoped, thought, believed that we would do it this year, but when realisation sets in, and you look at the rivals you can see we are still well behind, our opposition have massive advatages over us, money and/or mangers with time served and therefore sqaud development, and as we don't really have the money, the only way we can hope to reach the top is to have one of the best managers in the world and allow him time to develop a squad that can compete, and that includes mistakes he will make in the transfers, something that afflicts every manager. A replacement will NOT get us nearer the title, it is now clear the Americans money will be on par with WestHam, Tottenham, Newcastle (at best) and less than Man City, who will that money (or lack of ) attract??

We are on a knife edge right now, we can either have faith in a top class manager who loves the club and is determined to succeed, (and has done in every competition bar one) and who is midway through rebuilding the club and sqaud or we can spiral into the tail chasing of Clubs like Newcastle and Spurs who change manager every time difficulties present themselves. YNWA eh?

in future games, we should use our best squad against the sh1t teams and rest our players against quality teams

That performance can be summed up in one word: appalling.   I'm sure I'll have more to say on the matter tomorrow but that's all I can manage at the moment.  Gutted by our guttlessness. :no

First of all,i completly disagree wit all the :censored: about sacking benitez, hes a decent manager but has messed up a bit lately. We :censored: up the league, and the same will happen this season again like the other ones,we will be out of the race over the next month and then we wil go a great run scorrin all sorts of goals and well end up 3rd or 4th and we might get into another final.

I think we just need a bit more patience on benitez.Dirt Kuyt was signed because he was a great goalscorer in holland,he came to liverpool and he has worked so hard,it hurts us all to say it,but hes not good enough. We need another orld class striker like torres.United have Rooney,Tevez, and Saha.Torres is just as good if not better than them and our second striker(crouch, voronin, kuyt) is not as good as any of them.In midfield, once we get  alonso gerrard playing in the same team again we will be flying but we just dont have enough game winners(torres.gerrard) while united have (Ronaldo, tevez, rooney) along with Hargreaves,Nani,Giggs,Scholes,anderson,carrick.............we just dont have the extra strength in depth.

I have given up on Dirk, I know I have him in my sig and I will keep him there until he leaves, but only because I think he's a great bloke and I think he really tries his best every game. The sad fact is his best is not good enough.

Sadly Saint im coming round to that way of thinking after today mate . Ive always defended him in the past but today his ball control was shocking i really cant believe whats happend to him

I too have been very disappointed with his performances this season. I was hoping he'd build on what was a fairly good start to his career last season, 12 league goals and a hell of a lot of effort. I believe he's scored more league goals than any other of Rafa's signings, and his scoring record is better than Crouch's. In all honesty though, all of our forwards, with the exception of Torres have been largely disappointing this season when they've played, so I think it's slightly unfair to single Kuyt out.

I think its because Kuyt has been first choice striker since he came (After Torres of course), and people (me) feel that rightly or wrongly that Crouch hasn't been given a fair crack of the whip. Crouch has only started 4 league games this season, and while he has been frequently used as a sub I feel thats not really the best way for any striker to hit top form.

Crouch also looks like he might score, whereas Dirk often looks like he might never score.

I personally don't think any of our strikers (apart from Torres) are of the standard required if we are to win the league. Maybe one of them would be ok if we had 3 other top strikers. If I had to choose I would pick Crouch as the best of the rest not Kuyt.

Yep, Kuyt's work rate is phenomenal but his finishing is abismal.
I have also to agree that Crouch should start with Torres, Crouchy has scored far more goals when he's started games than just when he's come n as sub too. (I think)

hey I will run all day till I drop for £40,000 per week..am sure my work ethics are good too and how bad can my goal scoring record be compared to "Dick" Kuyt? Maybe Rafa should pen me in to partner Torres next...  :eyebrow

no cos the money they will get from the liverpool home game will see them good for a month or 2.

Also the manager said if we drawn vrs liverpool that is best result for us then we beat them at liverpool (this bit he wishing) then draw a man u or arsenal at there ground and the club would be safe till end of season.

It's probably unfair to single out Kuyt yesterday, though he was truly and utterly appalling. You can add Babel to that as well....another dismal performance from him, completely outshone by the Luton RB.
Heard the Sky "commentators" also suggesting that perhaps because Alonso and Lucas had played few games either individually or together this season, that that was a reason for being so inept for 90 minutes.
You know what ? Excuses, excuses, excuses.......
Liverpool were absolutely dreadfuly yesterday, and over the whole Christmas period. They are not good enough this season, last season....in fact, I can't see WHEN that's likely to change. Were I G&H, I would probably let him go, and I won't be surprised if they do.

yes i do feel the players havent been doing well of late and we can point out singles in the team of players and say it was him or he wasnt trying but i feel you have to look deeper and i feel this whole thing stems from rafa directly or indirectly.

sad because i think if DIC would have took us over things might have been different.

I'm really worried with Kuyt's form. He looked very very very short in confidence and it does not help that he's played out of position in the 2nd half. And is he the new son-in-law of Rafa? Cos he was :censored: throughout the whole match and yet wasn't replaced. I know Babel played :censored: too but at least he has the element of surprise and pace, which Kuyt doesn't have. And Kuyt also can't score! Actually, Kuyt has been :censored: for most of this season, together with Riise and Sissoko. We're not a charity club, we're a professional club! And I think it's about time to offload them this month to raise cash for Masch and a central defender.

And Riise? Oh pls, I wun even waste my time dwelling on a rubbish player.
