I feel like the club is in limbo right now.

By the end of this month Rafa will either be given money or will be sacked or will have resigned.

I think Rafa's fate is Champions League related.

If he wins another European Cup, I think he's relatively safe, provided he can build on that and make a better run for the Prem.

If he doesn't win the European Cup, he's on shaky ground IMO.

If he doesn't win the European Cup and also fails to secure at least fourth position this season, he's gone.

just what i said on page 6  :p

But i think we wont get past last 16 of CL and rafa will go , i think we was a little lucky the past few years in CL we defo have over achieved , dont get me wrong getting a good run will perk me up a bit over a bad season so far but lets face it we would have to win CL or FA cup or we have to pu this season down to a very poor one.  :upside:

The flare up against Hicks was too sudden and too violent - or so it seemed. Fans are pretty stunned by what happened followed by some dismal performances which have put us all down in the dumps.

Emotionally I agree with you but I like to think better judgement at board level will see us through this mni-crisis.

I wonder what the bh David Moores makes of all this and whether he's involved in any capacity in advising Rafa and/or G&H. But its worrying for sure.

Rafael Benitez on the defensive as expectations weigh heavily  Oliver Kay

Rafael BenÍtez painted a picture of a club moving forward harmoniously yesterday when he suggested that he and Liverpool’s American owners had a shared vision of the future. But, as he defended his record and his team’s disappointing performance in the Barclays Premier League, the message appeared to be directed towards Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr rather than the supporters, who tend to be more sympathetic to his plight.

Barring a dramatic softening of the owners’ stance, BenÍtez will not be in charge at Anfield next season, his strained relationship with the board deemed untenable even before a series of adverse results in the Premier League. But, as he prepares to take his team to Luton Town in the FA Cup third round tomorrow, the Liverpool manager urged his critics to look at the progress made by his regime and to take into account the difficulties in competing at a time when the bar is continually being raised by Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.

“Expectation is a problem,” BenÍtez said. “When we started this season, everybody was talking about how we can be title contenders this year. I think so too, but with the other teams also improving their squads, you never know. It is not easy.”

BenÍtez is frustrated by the perception - aired by Hicks – that the money he spent on Fernando Torres, Ryan Babel and others in the summer put Liverpool on an even playing field with United, who finished 21 points clear of them last season.

“Arsenal, United and Chelsea have very good teams and are also spending big money,” BenÍtez said. “We are progressing, but they are also.”

BenÍtez feels it is essential for Liverpool’s long-term future that they sign Javier Mascherano on a permanent basis, but the Argentina midfield player, whose “economic rights” are owned by two investment companies, is attracting interest from Juventus and Barcelona. “We will do our best to keep him here,” the manager said.

The Wigan game was a disgrace and IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Torres goal in the 49th minute we then had 41 minutes to build on that and we couldnt that is a disgrace and we are probably the laughing stock.

We are out of the title race lets not kid ourselves and why becuase we have 3 players that care Gerrard,Carragher and Torres.

We wont win the league until we realise we arent the team that has 18 league titles we are by name but by spirit no where near.

Games like
Wigan 1-1
Birmingham at home 0-0
Tottenham at lucky 2-2
Reading away 3-1 lose
Man utd home 1-0 lose

Next 3 games

Middlesborough
Aston Villa
West ham

Anything but 9 points is not acceptable

I have to agree that if we fail to win the CL or the FA cup, then it will probably result in Rafa's departure from Liverpool.  I think that this January transfer period is going to be really important.  It may show us what kind of future Rafa has at this club.

What a pot of bowlocks.

If winning the cup was so easy isnt it wouldnt have the prestige it does.

Sometimes I wonder whether people are fresh on the outside after a long stretch or whether their straight off the plane from Gydansk trying to fit in to our whinging and moaning society.    :sleep

We are most probably out of the race but that is not what worries me, we are not playing good football at all.  I have seen very little improvement since the start of the season and we look like we are content to be a top 4 team rather than push to challenge the like of Arsenal and ManU

And Arsenal have a good enough squad to be beating Boro and the Mancs are surely better than Bolton, right?

Progress isn't measured in one game or five games.  If it were, I'd be pointing to the Villa, Fulham and Derby games--games where we scored late to take all 3 points...something we've really struggled to do in the past.  Or, I might emphasize the number of games where we've scored 4 or more goals--again something we've not seen before under Rafa.  Might those be signs of progress?

The squad is too big.....The owners are no mucks....they know how to run a club. They would have seen how big our squad is...seen how much is the wage. So they are not going to give money for more players when in the 1st place we have too many players....So  rafa has to get rid of some of the non-performing players... It is dollars and cents...it is balancing the book.

We also have to see the big picture..Arsenal didn't spend big when they were building their stadium...SO why should we expect our owners to just give rafa a blank cheque when they are planning to build ours....?

All i want to add is if we perform the same lethargic way where we don't show any urgency in attack....wait it out for the other team to make a mistake.... we will draw these 3 matchs too....

We have to start every game like how we did against marseille...
