We've got a much better side than we had last season, and crucially we've now got one of the best strikers in world football at our disposal - a far better base with which to go forward than the toothless frontline of last season.

Fine, so results have at times not gone our way, but look at our dominance in games against Chelsea, and this week against Wigan. Games we should have put to bed, but because of a couple of deficiencies that still need addressing, points were dropped, and they're making the table look worse than it probably should look. It's being interpreted as a crisis, when in fact the opposite is true. The table doesn't lie, it never does, but it exposes you when you're a team that gets 15 chances a game and can't put a 2nd goal away. It tells me everything we already know - we're good, but we don't have a mentality at the club these days where we make wins happen.

We're two or three players away from being a league-troubling side, which I'm bored of saying as much as I'm bored of hearing it, but then I look at the average age of the squad, and then I look at the Chelsea and Man U who both have plenty of players on their books either in their 30s or fast approaching them. Every season since Rafa arrived he's brought in players of real quality.

Now and always, I'll sing our anthem and mean it. Regardless of what the papers say, one thing I'm not is worried - I'm excited. Our time hasn't come yet, that much is clear. It's coming though, and it's going to be something to be around when it arrives.

Good post, mate.  Pretty much sums my sentiments up as well. :nod

I don't want to ruin this thread as its nice to stay optimistic and our season is in no way over yet.

BUT.....I think we also need to be realistic as well. We have improved our team by £40million which works out at about £10million per point gained over last season up to this point.

We have bought one of the best strikers in the world, are supposedly creating 15 chances a game yet can't convert them?

If the mentality of the team is wrong..... who's fault is that?

We seem to be going backwards, a couple of seasons ago we "only needed a new RIGHT WINGER " now we are two or three players short again  :D

Great sentiments Leon and some great posts, but don't mistake sentiment for reality.

There's no question that this has been a disappointing season given our expectations in August.  I think even the most happy-clappy of us would agree.  But, I think what Leon and many people in the thread are advocating is taking a step back and really looking at the team.  Are we a million miles away?  IMO, no.  Is a radical shake-up necessary?  Again, it's no for me.  Would a couple of more signings at the Torres level in attacking positions make the difference between being well back by January and a genuine title challenge?  I believe so.  Is Rafa capable of taking such a team to the top of the league?  IMO, he is.  Realistically, I think a little fine tuning is what's needed and I hope that the owners, Parry and Rafa sort out their differences and get on with that job.

As for us supporters, a little bit of patience wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.  The table might not reflect it as clearly as we would hope but, IMO, we are still building a title-winning team.  It's going to take a little time but it will happen if we just stay the course.  Indeed, the worst thing we could do right now is replace Rafa because I'm quite certain that 'rotating' the manager would have a far greater disruptive effect on the team than even the most off-the-wall Rafa-style team selections.

Torres around      £20million plus add on's
Babel around       £11.5million
Benayoun             £5million
Lucas                  £6million

I would say there is over £40million's worth of improvements there. Or do you want me to say we have also damaged the team by selling xmillion of players as well ?  :D

I'd never call for Rafa's head; when you're at the game you support the team.

But after the match, when you're in the pub talking with your mates, that's when you
can say honestly what you think is going wrong.

There are plenty of match-going Reds who aren't convinced Rafa will ever win us the league.
I'm one of them.

We have improved it by that much but damaged it by about £20m so thats a net improvement of £20m.
