I am pretty sure Rafa thinks highly of him, or he wouldn't keep giving him chances in major games.

Its a sign of how sh#te we are on the left wing that Kewell would get straight back into the team when fit.

On the plus side it would enable Rafa to put Babel upfront.

He's going to have to do something massive (and I'm not talking about Sherry :D ) if he's going to be here beyond next June.

Thts because, presently and when fit. He remains the best of a dubious bunch. For how long that luxury lasts, is the key.

Harry Kewell for all his good points will not be re-newing his contract come the end of the season. I am not basing this on the fact that his wife has made no secret of his desire to play in a foreign league (Serie A if she gets her way), but the fact that re-newing a contract for Harry Kewell would be extremely bad business by the club after the last 4 years.

He came to us for what seemed like a "bargain" £4m in the summer of 2003 and to be honest with the exception of one good solid year in 2005 - 06, where he was part of the best Liverpool squad since the formation of the Premiership, he has done bugger all to justify the £4m price tag, never mind the reported £60,000 a week contract that Houllier handed out at the time.

He has shown glimpses of what Liverpool fans expected during his stop start career, the derby goals, the spurs volley etc,  and it is easy to sympathise with the plight of his career injury wise, however the simple fact is we must of ploughed at least £15m into Harry Kewell's "career" and the return has been shocking to say the least.

To renew his contract would be foolish for footballing reasons, and be financially idiotic.

So lets get behind the lad IF he makes a appearance at Anfield or on the road for the mighty reds, lets cheer him on and hope he gets into the form of his life for what's going to be a very exciting season for reds fans, maybe he can get his body right, come back and play his part in a fantastic final 5 months of the season, where the redmen are challenging domestically and on the european front, but come the end of the season, cut all ties and put him firmly into the bracket of "what could of been" and get a young fit lad in, who aint going to spend half his career in the physio room. And say

Thanks Harry, thanks for nothing.

How many times if Kewell going to get a last chance? yeah he's quality but we can't afford to pay a player wage who is basically a journeyman, he's a great player but not both carrying him will he makes a return and a month last he's injured again, I really like Kewell but we can't keep giving him more chances as this must be his fifth long term injury spell at least in the 4 years at Anfield, when will Rafa realise that Kewell needs to come back SLOWLY and not bring him back in the starting line up, give the lad 15-20 mins here and there to get his body strong again otherwise he'll be back in the physo's room AGAIN!!

Sorry Harry, although it's not your fault your had your £'s out of Liverpool, time to milk someone else!!!

From the footage/reports i'd seen of him, the signs were that we were acquiring a very special talent in the making. Question is, can Benitez and his current philosophy really be the one who actually oversees that transformation into reality? Surely not another dead horse to be flogged. The lad must have some redeeming features - for me, they lie farther up the pitch as an attacker.

As for Kewell, bah. He's had all the support and respect going.. Time to deliver or get on yer bike.

if he indeed does get on his bike, i fear another lengthy injury

Sure most of you have already picked this up but i have just read it on LFC website

Rafael Benitez today confirmed Harry Kewell is closing in on a return to full training at Melwood.
Kewell hasn't kicked a ball for the Reds this season after picking up an injury during the Asian Cup in the summer.

It was the latest in a series of injury setbacks for the Australian international, but Benitez is now hoping Kewell can prove his fitness and press for a place in the first team squad.

"He's been working really hard with the physios and next week he could be training or running with the rest of the first team," said the Liverpool manager.

"Harry is very important for us. A player with pace and ability who can score goals and who can also play as a second striker is always going to be important."

Despite splashing the cash in the summer to bring new wide midfielders to the club in Ryan Babel and Yossi Benayoun, Benitez insists Kewell still has a role to play at Anfield.

"It's clear he's someone with great quality and experience and we need these kind of players for the rest of the season," he said.

Meanwhile, Benitez is keeping his fingers crossed that Fernando Torres doesn't aggravate an ankle knock when playing for Spain this weekend.

The Liverpool striker was restricted to just a light training session with his international team-mates earlier in the week, but he's expected to figure in Spain's crucial clash with Denmark on Saturday.

"It's a risk but I know he wants to play because they have such an important game," said Benitez.

I feel the lad given he stays injury free, should have the chance with us this season and depending on form then make the choice next season as to keeping him or not.

No doubt the lad has talent and i'm not on about sheerie, but we as a club need to start seeing this. I hope he does come good as at the moment that left wing is up for grabs in my opinion.

Harry's staying. Made up, you were right S@int.

kazza wrote:I bet he gets injured playing for Australia this summer and plays very little next year. Will end up going on a free when his contract runs out..

Sell him in  Jan and get whatever we can for him. He will start to play well now as he needs some mug to pick up his contract but who cares. We do not need him and it is now a matter of principle with Harry even if he starts to play well. It will not last anyway.

If he just had a little bit of Carra (say 10 percent) in him I would not be saying this. No heart to play for Liverpool!

Seemed like a brilliant piece of business when we bought him, but we've got just 124 games out of him which is about two full seasons worth if you consider we're playing about 60 a season under Rafa.
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer
