it's a huge game. man city are away at villa which is tough, everton are away at old trafford, chelsea are at blackburn whilst arsenal take on spurs. all very difficult games so a victory is vital.

Mr. Benitez already posted my team so I'll propose an alt that hasn't been mentioned. hmmmm:
                             Reina
          Arbeloa           Carra         Hyypia
                Mascherano       Alonso
Gerrard                                              Aurelio
                Babel                Kewell/Yossi
                             Torres

Surprise 'em with the 'ole 3-2-2-2-1.  Thinking about it more I guess its really just a 4-4-2 with Aurelio placed in a more "bombing"    position and Kewell/Yossi moved more inside and forward

Whatever team Rafa picks we must win. I think we will. 2-0 or 3-0.

Are you basing this optimism on our last three results or is it perhaps blind faith??
I think we will just sneak a win here but maybe Rafa will pull another genius move and swap out the whole team.

would you prefer rafa to make no changes then and play the same team (minus crouch) as wednesday?

If anybody thinks pompey is gonna be stroll in the park .....well i don't really have to say anything because you are gonna see how tough they are to beat on saturday.

Anything less than our strongest team....and i don't think we will get 3 points from them. Rafa has to get it right. No more Kuyt and Voronin as wingers.....Sissoko....Hobbs.... cr@p.

Pick a strong team with the right balance and we should just nick it. Portsmouth are a very good counter-attacking team. And David James always plays a blinder against us. A ugly 1-0 win will do for me....

Lets leave the fancy football to the matches against derby and wigan.

The question is should we play it safe and pack up the midfield to deal with their counter attacks or should we go all out and put on a attacking midfield?

Gerrard,Mascherano,Alonso,Kewell

or

Benayoun,Gerrard,Alonso,Kewell

Gerrard,Mascherano,Alonso,Kewell

or

Benayoun,Gerrard,Alonso,Kewell

Play one holding midfielder alongside Gerrard who can also defend if needed.

Last four league games vs Pompey at Anfield

06/07 Liverpool 0-0 Portsmouth
05/06 Liverpool 3-0 Portsmouth
04/05 Liverpool 1-1 Portsmouth
03/04 Liverpool 3-0 Portsmouth

So if the pattern continues we should win 3-0. They haven't won at Anfield since 1951/2

This is an important game for us. Not only do we need to get back on a winning track to keep some sort of contact with the other big teams, but we also need to start moving away from the teams around us soon (ie Pompey, Blueshite, Citeh, Villa and even Blackburn). The christmas period might be an ideal time to do so, starting with a win against Portsmouth needless to say. I think Rafa will put out his strongest team, seeing as so many players were rested against Chelsea. Also our next game up is Derby away, which really should be a win in almost any case. It isn't going to be easy against Pompey though by any stretch of the imagination. I think they've won six in a row on the trot, and they've troubled us before. Still think we should be able to win it though, and if it's only a scrappy win I'll still be more than satisfied on this occasion.
