I prefer Mascherano (very slightly)but to be fair to Alonso I am sure he would have benefitted from the return of Kewell. Big difference between hitting Riise with an early ball and getting one to Kewell IMO.

Alonso has not played to his best level for a long while, either he has been "sussed out" or maybe the lack of options infront of him has restricted him slightly. Hopefully he will refind his form when he comes back.

I just hope we manage to keep both.

Agree with that, mate, and would add that Alonso would have also benefited from a resurgent Steven Gerrard playing next to him--not to mention a rampant Fernando Torres ahead of him.

Some stats :-

                     Mascherano               Alonso
mins played       608                        506
Assists                 1                          0
Passes              468                       299
Passing success   82.1%                  77.6%
tackles               63                       17
Tackles success   69.8%                  58.8%
interceptions       25                        12

Link to stats

So surprisingly Mascherano seems to beat Alonso in EVERY Catagory except goals scored (Alonso 2, including one fluke) It also seems to defeat the strange idea that Alonso is the better tackler.

yea but masherano tends to play short simple passes. where xabi tries the risky defence splitting passes which sometimes can be unsuccessful. its insane to compare very different players.

Nice to see him back if it is might get a little 10 mins just to get the legs goin

is this the same alonso that certain posters said our blip was due to his injury, then totally missed the fact our good run and great results were achieved when he wasnt playing also.

also its the pro rotationers that said we couldnt do without him while at the same time saying its ok to rotate him, work that one out.

anyway the mancs, i wonder if he will gamble with his team selection, surely he wont for this game

I wasnt lookin for an Alonso start Peewee its just nice to see him back in the squad .
But sayin that yea i do prefer Alonso to Macherano better ball player in my opinion, but everyone got there own opinion

But they are both in competition for the same position (if not the same role) in the team so it would be silly not to compare the two.

Riise and Kewell are also very different players but I know which I prefer to play left midfield.

maybe if you went to a game you will see the work all the players do off the ball, obviously watching on tv you can only see what they show, sadly this is the same for me the last 5 years but thats why I try and talk about things i know about as opposed to speculating on who is the better player, they both have their plus points but the fact we have performed very well without alonso speaks volumes and shows people can stop blaming the 'blip' on his absence

sorry nanny it looks like i was having a go at you, I wasn't, I just wanted to point out while you gave the chance that alonso is not the be all and end all like some people seem to state when they were scrambling round for excuses earlier in the season to defend rafa and our abysmal form

now then you bunch of bickering schoolgirls...

i'd pick masch ahead of alonso for tomorrow's game, he's the new kaiser - does all the simple stuff dead right 100% of the time and breaks up countless opposition moves. just what you need against a decent side who can play a bit. even if alonso was 100% match fit then i'd still go with masch for this game

i really can't wait for the match, it'll be a sh*te game as usual but those salford c*nts have got it coming to them. shame that little abortion gary neville won't be playing, victory would be all the sweeter if he was there to have it rammed down his inbred throat
