oh and one more thing why the hell bring babel on and play out wide right 40 yards from goal, when he pushed sissoko up into an almost attacking midfield role, yeah that makes complete sense i suppose. There is also no way that i'm a manc, christ call me anything under the sun but that, that is unforgivable.

I don't know mate, I don't go with this that he "gave up on the match". In actual fact our situation now reminds me a little of last season, where we are paying a heavy price for mistakes made earlier in the campaign. The earlier group stages of the Champions league fell right in the middle of our "blip", and while we were busy chopping and changing the team every week and desperately searching for some momentum, we of course lost Away at Besiktas and crucially, as Home against Marseilles. Becuase of this, we are in a predicament now which ws entirely avoidable in that we have to win our last game in the group away from home, and we are as a result having to sacrifice playing our best team in other games.

Those with good memories will remember the Macabi Haifa game at home in the Champions League qualifier of last season. There, we went with Bellamy on his own up front, a strange 4-5-1 and produced an entirely unconcing performance. Fortunately, in just about his only noteworthy contribution in  Liverpool shirt Mark Gonzales got the winner in the dying seconds meaning we took a slender 2-1 lead into the away leg. As one thing led to another (football like life is kind of like that) we played a weakened team in the debacle of Bramhall Lane, similar to yesterday we settled for a result in the last half an hour which was less than what was needed, and subsequently took about six weeks to recover and by which time of course, any hopes of a challenge for the title were gone..

The roots of the Reading defeat were sown in that "blip" period, there are no doubts in my mind about that. there are lots of ways of "resting" players. One is sitting them on their erse before they go into crucial, make or break Champions League group games in a cauldron atmosphere on foreign shores. Another way is getting some early momentum and winning your first few group games so your not under any pressure to qualify. Then you can rest the whole team like Arsenal did in Seville. It's an interesting take on the same idea.

Dude, if we lose on Tuesday, then YOUR Champions League adventure will only last two more games than ours.

Marseille haven't won a major trophy for a decade.

Maybe your club needs to offer bigger bribes.

Yeah you make a good argument for rotation i'll give you that, but is it really impossible for fit young athletes to play 3 games in 8 days, i suspect the answer is no. These lads train their bodies to the peak of physical fitness, they are conditioned for the job. To be honest i'd rather rafa have rested our key players against chelsea in the carling cup. Out of the premiership, champs league or carling cup which would we as fans rather win, it's a no brainer which one it's not. And furthermore i'm not necessarily criticising the rotation policy in terms of those that start, i'm criticising the ridiculous substitutions our 2 best/most dangerous players in a match in which we were losing. Are you seriously telling me that torres and gerrard couldn't have played a full 90mins, would that really of had such a massive impact on their bodies, i mean they are two of our most conditioned athletes. It's not the defeat that i'm incensed about, it's the manner of the defeat, the fact that 4 of our attacking players left on the pitch at the end of 90 mins were sissoko, mascherano, voronin and crouch, not exactly a frightening sight for reading players. How must poor gerrard be feeling having been taken off whilst sissoko stays on the pitch, a little betrayed i bet.

On a seperate note, I hope young Jack Hobbs doesn't take any blame for that defeat. I thought he was excellent today, a real bright prospect, but i fear because we shipped 3 goals that it might get blamed on the selection of the lad. Yes I am praising rafa for that one, I hope Jack's performance perhaps gives0 Rafa food for thought when he is considering buying a centre-back in january. It would also say something positive about our reserve team if the captain gets a real chance in the first team squad, it would make them realise that they could also get that opportunity if they apply themselves properly.

The problem is tactics...

4-3-3 is a good formation to play if

1)Kewell played as a Left attacker
2)Benayoun Played as a right attacker
3)Lucas played instead of sissoko

But like always rafa likes to overestimate his players and underestimate the opposition.

Crouch as a left attacker ???
voronin as a right attacker???
Sissoko on the team bus ???

Why does rafa have to make life so hard on himself...If he just picks the strongest team with the right tactics he would win most of the matches......

It was a mixture of things that went wrong today and we can blame it on a number of things.  But the main problem today was Rafa's team selection.  I think that he played it too safe with sissoko and masch in midfield and I know that many people were not confident when they saw the teamsheet.  I have never seen us have a good game with those two in the middfield it's always a mess.  Rafa should have used Lucas today.

I didn't say sack him either, I just meant he invites the criticism onto himself. :D I must confess I didn't actually notice his reply until you pointed it our Lynds. When I started a post earlier with "I don't know mate" he probably thought I was talking to him :D He then goes on to say I make a good case for rotation. I don't think anybody else noticed his post either 'cos he called me a couple of names and didn't get a warning. At best he's a WUM, at worst Lynds, you're calling it right

Sissoko had a good game as did Mascha but they are the same player pretty much, obviously one can pass better than the other, but in the end we had no movement going forward. Gearrd should never play on the right, he might be able to attack easier but he leaves holes and Torres by my reckoning needs gerrard just behind him in the middle.

All in all a :censored: poor result, but im not gonna fly off the deep end and start crying about tactics and :censored: like that. We got it wrong yesterday and we paid the price against reading. We do need to win against the mancs however and if we do we are still there or there abouts. We are looming in the background, i prefer this because now everyone :censored: will be writing us off anything this season even some people on here (fans?) but I belive we will come good.
Maybe not the prem but it will be close, closer than 2005-06.
