Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

bigmick wrote:Well amidst all the turmoil, posturing and nonsense, I do hope that everybody concerned remembers that this is a very important game for us on Saturday. Arsenal play Wigan at Home, while Man Utd and Chelsea face the hardly daunting tasks of trips to Bolton and Derby respectively. I would have thought it was nigh on a certainty that all three of those will win, so we really can't be affording any slip-ups.

No doubt at some point between now and the kick-off the old chestnut about International breaks and "tiredness" etc will rear its ugly head, and the temptation will be there to have a wee feck around with the team. I really hope this is resisted. Torres if fit would be a logiccal reintroduction, but other than that I see no real reason (barring injuries I don't know about) to overly change the line up which has scored ten without reply in the last couple of games.

Hopefully we're over all that resting Gerrard/Torres stuff for away games now, and we can put all this speculation about who said what to whom behind us and get a result, and by a result it looks like a win is pretty paramount to be honest.

The best chance we have of ensuring the manager gets his financial backing is by staying in the race for the League title as long as possible. To do so we need to win games such as this one, and probably beat Man Utd at Home as well. It's all doable provided the players and management keep their nerve.

Mick, here's the team that played against Besiktas and Fulham:

Reina
Arbeloa
Carragher
Hyypia
Aurelio
Benayoun
Gerrard
Mascherano
Riise
Voronin
Crouch

You've advocated bringing Torres back in--a "feck about" that I think we all would agree with.  On top of that, Benayoun's still out with his groin injury, as far as I'm aware.  So, we've got to also "feck around" with the wide players as well.  Personally, I'm not that concerned with preserving the momentum from our last two matches since a two week break categorically throws all that out the window, in my book.

FWIW, I'd line up like this:

Reina
Arbeloa
Carragher
Hyypia
Aurelio
Babel
Gerrard
Mascherano
Kewell
Crouch
Torres

And, if that team gets us a result tomorrow, I'd stick with it until forced into a change because it is, for my money, the best team available at the moment.

I agree. I would pick the exact same team.

Forgot Benayoun was out - what about this then:

Reina
Finnan, Agger, Carra, Arbeloa
Gerrard, Mascherano, Lucas, Kewell
Babel, Torres

Lucas is a gamble but he looks top class. Babel and Torres pace will murder Newcastles back line!!

RICK PARRY today called on Liverpool’s players and staff to put all off field problems behind them and to concentrate on getting a positive result against Newcastle United.

It has been a difficult 48 hours at Anfield following Rafa Benitez’s much publicised fall out with American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

But Parry insists the time has come for the focus to return to events on the pitch, particularly with Liverpool facing a demanding run of games heading into December.

He said: “We need to focus on events on the pitch and nothing else, starting with today’s game against Newcastle.

“Next we have another big game against Porto in the Champions League so we are in the midst of a string of important games and we just need to focus on events on the pitch, which has always been the Liverpool way.”

Benitez suffered a major blow ahead of today’s trip to the north east when Daniel Agger was deemed not fit enough to travel.

The Danish defender has been building up his fitness at Melwood after suffering a broken metatarsal in early December but the Newcastle game has come too soon for him.

Sami Hyypia is now certain to keep his place in central defence alongside Jamie Carragher.

Javier Mascherano’s late return to Merseyside after being on international duty with Argentina in Colombia means Benitez will leave it until the last possible moment before making a decision about whether he is in the right condition to start the game.

Mascherano only arrived back on Merseyside yesterday afternoon following a gruelling 14 hour flight and Benitez must decide whether to take a risk on the Argentinian or to leave him out, with both Lucas Leiva or Momo Sissoko coming into contention.

Harry Kewell is also in with a chance of starting his first game of the season for Liverpool having completed 90 minutes for Australia in their recent friendly against Nigeria.

Kuyt needs a good display today, preferably a goal to boost his confidence.  If he has another 'mare he will be goosed

Gerrard had to start on the right I suppose as Pennant and Yossi both injured.. So that only left Lucas and Sissoko for the cenre partnership.

Good to see Kewell back, would have prefered Crouchy up front with Torres but that was never going to happen!!
