Another player that is often overlooked but who was as brave as a lion and a much better defender than anyone ever credits was Phil Thompson. He was up against some of the roughest toughest forwards at the time.... Joe Jordan for one, and rarely came off second best. Alan Hansen always said he preferred partnering Thompson to Lawrenson.

Another great underated player was Chris Lawler what a great full back never got the international recognition that he so rightly deserved if you could find a goal scoring full back like him now we wouldnt need 4 strikers .one season he finished second top goalscorer. But he was so quiet and just got on with his job . i think because he played alongside Tommy Smith and Smithy was the outspoken one and the hard tackler he came into the limelight more.

He finished up as a van driver in Australia I think Nanny. He scored on my first visit to Anfield in a 2 -0 win over the mancs back in '68. He also scored a hatrick against Bayern Munich and in an Fa cup semi against Everton.

We sold him to Villa but I think he went down the divisions shortly after that.

not under rated by us, but didi....
he was playing at a time when keane and viera were getting all the glory but hamman did just as well for us as they did for there teams if you ask me. he was just a quiet german with a slight scouse accent. All other fans would just call him a boring german, when we all knew what a genius he was.

I'll always remember cheering when he scored the last goal in the old wembley for germany and almost getting lynched lol
