Vegard Heggem? I thought he was quite good for us.

And he was. Brilliant little winger on his day. Could use his kind of pace and trickery even now.

Of that era, I can't thnk of many. Bjornebye turned decent as I recall, and Babbel.

We can't really call Finnan underrated any more can we?  He was certainly underrated a season or two ago but nowadays everyone appreciates how important he is when he plays.  Like Carra before him he has now made the transition from 'underrated player' to quality player.

IMO Arbeloa is our currently most underrated player.  I think he's a great full back, solid enough defending and very good with the ball at his feet when he needs to go forward too.  Equally comfortable left and right back.  Yet I still get the impression not all fans have taken to him.

Down the years, Patrik Berger springs to mind as underrated.  He was immense for a few years until injuries ruined him.  Could have got better too if he hadn't been continually injured from the age of about 26/27 onwards.  Litmanen was underused rather than underrated.  Heggem was good too, suffered a similar fate to Berger injury-wise.  Other players like Henchoz and Rob Jones were always rated by LFC fans I think.

For me, the most underrated player to play for us has to be Craig Johnston!
i never, ever saw him play a bad game for us,he gave nothing less than 100%
his attitude, commitment was second to none, even when he was dropped
he never complained he,just worked hard to re-gain his place,& when i think
back to the awsome team of the 80"s most players would of sulked, felt
sorry for themselves, demanded a move away etc he showed great
dignity,& passion to play for us,he was a credit to himself, the club
& most of all us "the fans" who he wanted to do so well for!
his enthusiasm for the game was infectious & i was privaliged
to watch him play on a regular basis, for me he was underused on too
many occasions, Craig Johnston would definatly be part of my all
time favourite sqaud! i hope others on here miss skippy as much as me!

Good shout Saint

Remember bumping in to him in Halewood and him moaning about to many scots being in the team .we had just signed kenny, souness and were about to sign Hanson. He loved Liverpool though worked hard , he was our Tommy Smith in the middle of the park, but i think hes legendary status was giving Keegan a dig at half time in the 77 cup final against man utd, said he wasnt trying hard enough. Shame we havnt got a few more players like him now.

Another player who i think did not get the recognition he deserved espiecaly on the international stage was Alan Kennerdy 2 caps for England better left back than Kenny Sanson anyday.

I loved Barney anyway :bowdown

Terry Mac was a much better player than a quick trip down memory lane would lead you to believe. Because he played in such a fantastic team alongside Souness he never got the credit he deserved. An engine like Kuyt yet with considerably more goal threat than the Dutchman, and a very tidy footballer as well. With him and Champagne Charlie in the middle, our central midfield was just about as good as you could wish for.

Jimmy Case is a good shout, and Sammy Lee was a very tidy player as well. If Peter Beardsley had played for Man Utd he would be talked about as probably the most gifted striker of his generation, because he didn't (I've a hunch he was there as a kid but I might be wrong) he isn't.

Ray Kennedy was as classy a player as you could wish to see. Antoher who doesn't get overly mentioned unless people are talking about the awfulness of his disease. A converted striker, he could open a tin can with his left foot and was a brilliant player to watch.

Alan Kennedy was a much better fullback than given credit for by many, chipping in with occasional vital goal in cup finals, inevitably followed by extremely ill-advised celebrations    :D . His partner in crime Phil Neal is often remembered for his cringworthy contributions to the Graham Taylor documentary, but was a brilliant full-back (picked up from Inter Northampton, or was it Real Northampton or somebody I believe) and probably the best penalty taker I ever saw.

There's absolutely no doubt we've had some wonderful footballers over the years. With the passing of time and the overuse of superlatives, allied to unsuccessful forays into management, you sometimes forget just how good some of the players were. Imagine if we had Barnes and Beardsley only out of our past, would we win the Premiership, now, from where we are, this season? 'Course we fecking would, simply because with Barnes on the left and Beardsley alongside Torres we would rip teams up for erse paper and score for fun. How anbout Dalgish alongside Torres, or Keegan? Maybe Hansen at the back, or Souness in the middle (with the greatest respect to both, forget about Alonso or Masherano here), could we win it then? Definately.

Ian Callaghan Mick would surely be the engine in the middle along side Souness
One of the most underrated players in the history of football i think .4 caps for his county what a misscarrage of justice

The same old hardman Tag fell on Tommy Smith.  He was just a bit more than average lol

Terry Mac too deserved a lot more england caps

Matt Busby

"Soon after Bob Paisley joined Liverpool from Bishop Auckland it was Busby who took him under his wing and showed him the ropes at Anfield. This led to a lifelong friendship between two of the most successful managers in English football history."

So have we got Busby to thank for our success??

How about supersub himself David Fairclough? He didnt seem to inspire much confidence when he started a match did he?

David Thompson another one, great talent that got away.

Another player who i thought was very under rated was Peter Cormack just done his job.
I felt sorry for him when he got injured because thats when Paisley decided to play Ray Kennerdy in midfield after that he couldnt get his place back and left
