Unfortunatley i think i have been born at the wrong time. supported liverpool since 1990, my RL team st george dragons haven't won sinc 1979 (6 yrs before i was born) so my 2 teams haven't bought me a lot of joy (of course liverpool have in doses). Being only 22 and not counting any of aussies cricket or rugby world cups (which is many, ha, and you think us guys are arrogant when it comes to sport) i will have to go for cathy freeman winning gold at syd olympics. The girl was under so much pressure to win at her home olympics it was unbelievable. When she did win she hardly celebrated but looked relieved as the pressure was released. Was an amazing race to be at as well. Fantastic!

Well my opinion is of the 4 british , against Hagler maybe the more durable 2 (Collins and eubank) would have put up the best fight, but Alan Minter was durable and Hagler busted him up like a little rag doll.
As for Tommy Hearns...well he really blew hot and cold as a middle weight...although he had knockout power he hadnt the strongest chin at that weight. That showed against the likes of Iran Barkley. So all 4 would have been in with a shout against Hearns (at middle weight)

Just wondering Nanny red-do you remember the Herol Graham/Julian Jackson scrap...one of the best one punch knockouts I ever did see...

British mens 400m relay team winning gold in the Olympics and 2005 Ashes win.

Oh and winning the rugby world cup in 2003 and then reaching the final in the next tornament. What an achievement!

Yeh gutted for Graham he was all over him until he stuck his chin out.

Never got the exposure the others got and no
one here wanted to fight him but a very clever boxer and with the right managment team behind him he could have done better. A lot of his fights were hard fights with top boxers i remember when he fought Mike MCCallum he omly lost that fight by a point (a point which was deducted in the 13th) gave him one hell of a fight. Tricky little boxer. Was Minters sparring partner before he fought Hagler.

Other "one punch" merchants that I can remember were a Mexican bloke (at least I think he was mexican) who took out John H Stracey and Dave 'Boy' Green. Think his name was Carlos Pallamino or something and he was one that once he hit 'em, they stayed hit. Colin Jones the Welsh fella was very siimilar, not a fantastic boxer but feck me he could dig a bit. Was it Milton Mcrory (might not be) who he very nearly won the World title off a couple of times. There was an English bloke (Clinton Mckenzie is in my head but it might be somebody completely different) who boxed Jones's head off twice before getting done with almost identical goodnight shots in the latter rounds. Another good little fighter I remember from my youth was Alexis arguello who beat Jim Watt. I think he won World titles at three different wieghts, back when they meant something. Also a top fighter was the bloke they successfully kept McGuigan away from, Azumah Nelson. They steered a path well away from him before bizarrely taking a fight in the desert against that Steve Cruz bloke. Never understood that.

I used to be bang into boxing but just lost interest when all this WBO :censored:

started, five different World Champs at each wieght and all that old b0ll0cks.

McClellan was the best pound for pound fighter around at the time and no one thought Benn had a chance. Unbelievable guts and determination from Benn to recover from the punch in the first round and then again in the 9th (i think). I watched it back on You Tube (the whole fight is on there) a little while back. I love my boxing and Benn is one of my biggest sporting heroes. He never gave up, he kept coming and he NEVER took a step backwards. I wish a few more footballers had his mentality.

Good shout , loved Steve Collins i went to both them fights and was made up when Collins won. But i wouldnt say it had the same hype that the McClellan fight had.

Saying that Benn was an outstanding fighter but i just couldnt warm to him Collins on the other hand was also a good fighter and a hard man with the heart of a lion.

My personal favorite at that time though was Michael Watson absolute sheer class i went to both the Watson Eubank fights. the first one Watson should have won the second one some people actualy say it was the best fight they have seen by two English boxers. YES i would agree with them i for one was roaring on Watson and Eubank was down and out but then came the 12th and everyone knows what happened after that.

I was wondering which one of our middleweights do you think would have given Hearns or Hagler a good fight if they would have all been in there prime

i would love to see collins and calzaghe fight, although they are ages apart, wouldve been great if they were similar age.

i wouldve bet on collins to beat calzaghe hands down

there's no one in the division worth fighting, thats why calzaghe wins so many times. although you can only beat whats in front of you - not his fault though

It's a good question and i'd love to see the fights. I believe they all would have held their own. Benn Vs Hagler - now that's a fight i would have loved to have seen.

Hagler was UNDISPUTED middleweight champ for about 7 years. He was head and shoulders above Collins, Benn,Eubank,Watson etc

Not slagging them off, great fighters and great nights but not a patch on the great man himself.

People that really know the sport say Sugar Ray Robinson best fighter ever.

putting my Irish bias aside, Calzaghe would beat Collins on points (nobody could knock Collins out) but Steve was fairly one dimesional.

I remember that fight Bigmick, Stracy who was a classy boxer in his own right, screamed out in pain when that fellow Carlos Palomino hit him in the ribs!

One of the biggest boxing upsets for me was the night Lloyd Honeyghan beat Don Curry. Couldnt believeeeeeeee it, Curry was awesome up until that fight, he split Colin Jones' nose almost in half such was his ferocity.

Someone said Calzaghe and Collins- be hard pushed to pick a winner there , maybe Collins, sometimes ya lose heart hittin a brick wall.

How good a fight would Roy Jones and Sugar Ray Leonard have been? :oh:

My favourite sporting moment is tinged in tragedy. It's when Nigel Benn beat Gerald McClelland. It is still my favourite fight of all time and probably the most violent fight on these shores at that class. McClelland had so much more class, accuracy and power over Benn, but it was Benn that had more heart. He never stopped coming forward.
Sorry to p!ss on any Irish bonfires, but I'm sick of people putting Steve Collins in the same bracket of Benn, Eubank and Watson. He was nowhere near as good as them. He was just a brawler. He beat Benn and Eubank in the twilight of their careers and never proved himself against any other greats. When a certain young boxer called Calzaghe became mandatory challenger, Collins quit, he retired.
