£11 mil was far to much.  Why the club paid this I have no idea.  Seems to me they were so frightened of someone else getting him they decided to put in bed which blew everyone else out of the water.  £11 mil for someone who doesnt play often and who the manager doesnt seem to know his best position is madness.

I know he has only played in a handful of games .

Think that just about says it all.

ie "Haven't seen much of this lad but lets just fu'ck him off anyway"

expected better from you RD.

I don't think we're talking about "Fu*king him off" after only a handful of games. It is just being pointed out, that maybe we should have spend 11 million (which makes it one of our most expensive buys) on someone, who could produce a more instant positive impact on our team. Babel no doubt has the possibilities to become a very good player, it's just that he hasn't been able to take us further forward in the winger department up until now, has he? This doesn't mean, that he won't be a very good player for us in the future, it just means that we really haven't moved that much forward in a crucial position (where we are desperately in the need of some creativity) since last year. This is my take on it anyway.

11 mill, instant impact ? . 10 mill + is the rate for any upper echelon player , if you want instant impact you're lookin' in the 20 mill + range or buyin' a scratch card.

That might be true, but maybe we should at least have gone for an out and out winger then? Unless of course we've got other plans with Babel, in which case it isn't fair to make that comparison. But in that case I don't understand it, as everyone can see we aren't offering enough on the wings (enter Harry Kewell.... hopefully  :D )

Don't agree with this mate.... by that reasoning, how many "upper echelon" players do we have in the squad?

The players that worth 10+ million quid in the current squad are IMO, the following....

1. Reina
2. Carra
3. Agger
4. Macsherano
5. Alonso
6. Gerrard
7. Torres

That's bout it to be honest.... The rest of them are all worth below 10+ million quid..... Which really is disturbing if you think about it.... we only have 7 upper ecelon players and 3 of them are central midfielders competing for 2 positions... which essentially means that at any one time we only have 6 upper echelon players on the pitch?

Bit scary really......

Back on topic.....
Babel has potential, IMO.... but will need games consistently if he's to develop further. There's no real point in buying someone like him if opportunities are going to be few and far between for the lad.... as it's going to feck with the possibility of him reahing his full potential.

I didn't say we lacked upper echelon players,my point was if you want instant impact you're looking at paying significantly more than £11 million.

Maybe it's just me who was a bit unclear with the whole "instant impact" describtion. What I meant was not, that I expect someone to get into our team and score 5 goals in his first 5 games each time being crowned MOTM. What I meant was someone though, who was good enough to instantly be a first team regular, who once in a while scored and created a goal. Again I'm not saying Babel wouldn't be doing this, if he was playing more often, but that's just it: he isn't, as Rafa apparently doesn't rate him that highly (yet). So in that case the purchase of Babel hasn't really taken us forward, seeing as he hasn't knocked someone out of the starting lineup (though we all know, that we don't exactly have a settled first 11 anyway :D )

The signing of Babel has made us stand still, he is no better on the wing than Mark Gonzalez was last year.

Harsh, but sadly true.

'kin hell RD, how many games has he started all season, 2-3?

I personally think the lad is quality and will really shine once he has a few games under his belt. Kewell coming back will also give him the impetus to step up and really push for the first team spot. He and Gonzalez are miles apart in ability.

Rafa has been loathe to play wingers over the last 4-5 games but I for one was glad to see Babel start today. I believe that £11M for him is a steal as he will be one of the players, IMO along with Lucas, that will come through (aside from Torres, obv) from this seasons signings to really have a positive impact on the team.

He is not a winger mate, never will be. We were crying out for a left sided winger (and a right one imo) this summer and Rafa gambled on Babel. The gamble was a wrong move, we are awful down the wings and no better than last year.

Babel MAY be a good prospect, he may develop into a fantastic striker (I doubt that but thats another argument), but he is not,  and doesn't look like he could ever be a genuinely decent left winger.

Babel is not the target of this post, Rafa's decision to sign him is.
