Right.  There's been a lot of discussion about how best to handle the match thread(s) around here so I've decided to poll you lot to see what you'd like.

Our thinking, some weeks back, was to start locking the match threads at a certain point and to open post-match threads as the place for discussion.  The rationale was that people wouldn't have to guess where the post-match discussion started when faced with a lengthy match thread, thereby avoiding the tedious scrolling through of in-match commentaries etc. to get to the analysis.

The question, then, became when to lock the match thread.  If we did it right at the final whistle, the post-match thread became less a discussion and more a place to celebrate, vent etc.  Since our hope was to have the post-match thread be more of a forum for discussing the match rather than emoting about it, it seemed prudent not to lock the match thread straight away.  So, we decided that we'd start leaving the match thread open for a few hours before locking it.  Of course, some people don't log on until after the thread is locked, and then give us stick for denying them a chance to contribute.  That's what happened mid-week and that's why today we've kept the match thread open despite someone starting a post-match discussion thread.

Now, I recognize this is all very confusing and that we have had little consistency from week to week, so if you'd like to help us establish a straightforward match thread policy vote in the poll and share your comments.  We'll take your suggestions under advisement.  Dig?  :;):

Well I chose the first one, because IMO a match thread should include pre-match and post-match comments. starting two threads for one game could be a handful.

Maybe the downside of it is that you can't read all the comments because there will be about 150 members posting at the same time so you won't catch up quoting them and discuss them in a relaxing and manner way.

I prefer the single thread , mainly because it saves trying to remember who said what and where. I think if it ain't broke why fix it.

A post match discussion thread is ok in theory, but in practise it breaks up the flow and we seem to get a lot more off shoot threads starting up because of this.

I just like the single match thread. Good try, worthy effort, but lets stick to what works!

sorry but i disagee.

I don't post much in football discussions, primarily becuase other posters say what i want to say, only better.

So from the point of view of a reader, i prefer the threads to be split - Match Thread & Initial "in the heat of the moment" reactions - followed by -The a Match Review Thread "more considered responses and discussions.

But its not like i'll stop reading if it doesn't happen.

I think if there's going to be a match and a post match thread, then the match thread needs to be closed at the final whistle.
Yesterday, a post match thread was opened up shortly after the game and the match thread was still active.

I prefer the close the match thread a few hours after the game and open a post match thread method, for (hopefully) more considered responses after we've all calmed down.

I think the way it is done now is spot on. let people go crazy for a while in the match thread while us boring old farts can dissect the finer points of our own b0ll0cks on the other. It works for everyone. The knee jerkers don't spoil our stamp collecting, and we don't bore them to distraction.

Stamp collecting! :D

Just so I'm clear, mate, you prefer the option where both threads are open at the same time?
