The lack of signings.... - 11 questions...

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby begintoend » Thu Jul 29, 2004 6:49 am

1) The management is disgusted by the fact that we were 30 points away and having to battle so hard as to get a 4th position.

2) No. The tactics were wrong, the positioning of players in unnatural position was a failure and the inability to notice the team is not doing well.

3) Kewell was absolutely confused. Gerrard was putting on responsibilities on his shoulders when other players gets less, Biscan was never a centre back and MO misses too many penalties for a player of his stature.

4) Gerrard probably, MO might be but not at a price we wanna sell at and Hypia, only for the premiership or scottish leagues.

5) Aimar, Baraja, Vicente, Ayala and a good coach. These go into the Liga 1st XI anytime.

6) Only Gerrard.

7) Yes. We are far away from em'. Calculate the points. A 2 digit difference is already not competitive.

8) Yes. I know Benitez can blend a team together for a potent challenge next season. The highlight is team and not individual.

9) No doubts.

10) Yes. All shows more determination to make things right, have loads of respect for the new manager and everyone needs to play well to get onto the 1st XI consistently.

11) Yes, with the right attitude towards winning.

12) Yes, Igor! And he is trying to groom La Tellec.
================================================================================
We are not wasting our money when Beni is trying to keep many players as he would like. The signings that came and about to come will hold some remedy to our teams weakness. We will fight to be champs next season.

In answer to your puzzlers Stu :

1. Gerard Houllier, despite having excellent footballing knowledge, and a great deal of respect within the game, was tactically inept. (Michael Owen does NOT play well as the lone striker, Did Hamman should NOT have been brought off against Bayer Leverkusen, Igor Biscan is NOT a centre Half). His eye for spotting and nurturing raw young talent was there for all to see, Milan Baros, Stevie G and the two young Franch lads owe him a great deal, but his man management skills when dealing with Star Players was clearly lacking. A managers only responsibility, be it in football or any other line of work, is to posotively influence performance. towards the end GH was not doing this, so his time was up.

2. NO, categorically no. Michael Owen is not adept to ploughing a lone furrow, this is not the way to employ his undoubted talents. John Arne Riise is not a true left back. When he played left midfield in front of Gregory Vignal when he first joined the club, he and Vignal were awesome and gave the team a great balance. Emile Heskey is not a left midfielder, no two ways about it. Harry Kewell is a left winger/midfielder and forward and is out of his depth on the right. El Hadji Diouf is not a forward and he is not a midfielder either, the lad could not cross a coupon. Salif Diao was excellent when he played in the engine room when he first signed. He is not a right back or a centre half.

3. See Above

4. Sami Hyypia would walk into anyside in football, as he is a collosus. He is great in the air, comfortable on the ball and he scores three plus every season. his only weakness is the lack of pace, but a more mobile partner would alay that worry.
Stevie Gerrard has the potential to become the greatest midfielder in the world, and would get into your team on that alone. He does however need to get his head down, work harder and stop reading the newspaper inches about himself.
Owen is class, no two ways about it, however his over employment from a young age has left him injury prone and a little slower. He is still good for 25 goals a season with the right partner and service though, so its a yes for Michael also.

5. No, not by a long shot. Real Madrid undoubtley had the best players, and Barca and Deportivo had some rela star names. Valencia did have some good players, but not the best team in La Liga by a distance. This is why I beleive that the board have produced a masterstroke in Rafa's appointment. He gets the very best and the most out of his players.

6. To a decent standard, a fair few, but LFC is not about the average performances or the decent games, its about excellent performances and superb games. This is where we have been lacking. Stevie G obviously stood out, but Carra was excellent, and Sammi was very good considering the different partners he had to endure.

7. On paper, not too far away, but nobody ever won the league on paper.

8. As I said in response to question five, I think we are in for some amazing times at Anfield, I back and support the new gaffer, but I also beleive in him, which was something I could not have said about Roy Evans, Souness and Houllier (in the later years).

9. All in all, the two players are very similar, strong good in the air and pacy. Djibril is much stronger and he also scores a lot more goals than Emile. so it will only improve the team.

10. It is inevitable that all the players will perform better for the new boss. Obviously they will be fighting to impress the boss, to get a place but they will also feel that they have the trust of the new man, where they may have not been looked upon as first team material by GH.

11. The reason why you and me both love football is that anything can happen. For every Arsenal read Wrexham, for every Brazilian world cup winner there is a Greek Europen Champion. Its the unpredictability of football that makes it so exciting. Build it and he will come.

12. If there is one signing of the three bad that has a chance of making it, and indeed that Rafa has a chance of improving then it is Salif Diao. I rate him and I think he could be the impressive surprise on the team sheet next season.

I'd debate you Stu on saying that Hyppia and Riise are the same players now as they were in 2002.

Hyppia was excellent that season but last year he was below his high standards.

Riise took some dramatic steps backwards since 2002.

Owen is not as potent now as he was then.

Of course its not set in stone that these guys will stay where they are. I expect all three to return to form next season, especially Owen and Riise.

3. In your opinion, what players where not used properly?

4. Would Hyypia, Gerrard and Owen walk into any side in the world?

5. Did Valencia have the best players in la liga?

6. How many players performed last season to a decent standard.

7. On paper are the top teams that much further ahead than us?

8. Do you believe in the new manager?

9. Do you think the replacement of Heskey with Cisse will make us stronger?

10. Do you believe all our players will have a better season than last?

11. Do you believe anything is possible in football?

12. Finally, do you think Benitez can make something of at least 1 of Houllier's bad signings?

1. Because unfortunately after his heart surgery his management went understandably downhill. Our successful way of playing during the treble season was nullified by teams willing to throw men behind the ball. houllier lacked the nous or the balls to change our style of play to combat this and consequently we ended up being a boring side to watch. Finishing 30 points off the top was a disgrace.

2. No, No and No. Owen as a lone striker, Heskey as a left winger, Diouf as a right winger, Diao as right back, Henchoz as right back, Biscan as centre half. Just some of the mad decisions Houllier made during his reign.

3. Jari Litmanen, Robbie Fowler, Milan Baros to name but three

4. Hyypia yes, still a class act imo. Same for Owen. Anyone who wants to argue with this should just look at his goal record and the stage on which he's produced.

5. No way. Real and Barca had far superior players individually. However with those reputations came big ego's and poor performances. Players such as Figo, Raul and Kluivert had shocking seasons. Valencia had the best TEAM and the best MANAGER. That is the difference.

6. Gerrard, Carragher when he came back from injury and Hyypia, considering he had to play alongside Biscan for most of the season.

7. In my opinion no. Arsenal are the benchmark because they have a settled side who play superb attacking football. They don't have a big squad and if they lose Vieira they will suffer badly. Manure are no better than us anymore imo. Chelsea are a different kettle of fish but need time to blend. Our biggest hope is Benitez getting the best out of the players who aren't necessarily in the first eleven week in week out.

8. Definitely. He is already making a great impression by saying all the right things. His CV speaks for itself and we just hope that he can instill the sort of one touch play we saw from Valencia at Anfield a couple of seasons ago. If he can, then we are in for a treat.

9. Yes. Ok Cisse has got to prove it yet in England but from what I have seen he will be an improvement on Heskey, mainly due to his superb self-belief and DESIRE to play for us.

10. Most of them can't play much worse. Stevie will do well to be as consistent as last season given everything that's gone on over the summer. However this is a new era, and I can see vast improvements in all areas.

11. Yes. Just look at Euro 2004.

12. Biscan could become a very good squad player if Benitez can instill him with confidence. That is what Igor lacks.

Our opinions of world class are miles apart by the sound of it so thats a bad term to use. :p

For me, Gerrard, Owen and Hyypia would walk into any side in the world probably, Kewell is more than capable but has only ever shown flashes, saying that that was only his first season. We've all seen how good Riise can be and he's improved alot defensively and i think the goalkeepers are amoungst the best in the country. Cisse, well i've yet to see him properly and live on a regular basis, but from what i have seen and read he's top class.... or at least not far off...

Theres more there than you are giving credit for believe me. You'll see this season coming and nothing will be better than me sitting here at the end of the season and saying "told you so :p ".

If i can say that to ya at the end of the season, we'll both be happy fella's.

Gerrard and Owen would be able to walk into any side in the world
Hyypia most sides but not the likes of Milan or Juventus.
Kewell can mix it up with the very best on his day but they are likely to be few an far between thanks to his ankle (which he stubbonly refuses to have an operation on).
I agree we need a few higher quality (is that a better term than World Class?  :D ) players in order to compete with the best in the world but I don't feel that the current squad is realisticly capable of mounting a serious title challenge.
I think the best we can hope for is to still be in with a conceivable chance in February.  However I do feel we are easily capable of winning the FA Cup and League cup (however the pointless the latter is, its still good enough for middlesborough!)

Cisse I think is going to challenge Van Nistelrooy and Shearer in the scoring charts (I don't think anyone can match Henry if he plays like last season).

I hope at the end of the season you WILL be able to turn round and so to us all 'i told you so.'  because that can only mean good  :D

Be realistic, Hustler. We are not going to win the title straight out like this and it was never a target for Rafa to win the title in his first year as manager.

If you want instant title winning aspirations, go and support Chelski who aould satisfy you with their signing every decent tom, dick and harry at a drop of a hat and ad ridiculous transfer prices. Rafa is a foreigner who is new to the EPL but he is a proven winner, and in the tradition of Liverpool, will be given a reasonable time to assmeble a title winning squad.

If the lack of signings is a source of frustration to you, then blame it on the previous reign for blowing a good part of well over 100 million pounds with duds that he himself was afraid to play in his team regularly.

Get a grip and live in a real world.

As a fan, I am willing to give Rafa time as do most of us here. Houllier was given time so why not Rafa? What I would more like to see is steady progress this year and the next and perhpas win the title then. Don't expect the impossible or unprobable just because Rafa did it at Valencia in his first year.
