In any event, I would not be surprised at all to see Crouch start on Saturday, presuming he doesn't play for England mid-week.  After all, his only league start came after the last international break, when Rafa looked to rest Torres and Kuyt.  Granted, Crouch was sat at Wembley that time rather than traveling to Russia but, if he doesn't play, I predict Rafa will risk the jet lag and play him, especially given the fact that both Torres and Kuyt have muscle tears.

Bob i agree he may get a start on Saturday....BUT thats only due to the fact that Torres and Kuyt are major doubts.
Something has definately gone on behind the scenes i think because he has been effectively bombed out, similar to Cisse and Bellamy, he may get the odd game here and there but he is not even in the squad most of the time, and is being given no real opportunity to play himself in to form or gel with the other players (although he's not alone there)
He will be gone by the summer, that seems clear to me.
I only hope Rafa has a replacement lined up as at the moment its as if we only have 3 strikers on the books.
The fact that Crouch is playing in cup games isnt relevant really mate, i think thats just to give the others a rest.[/quote]
I suppose we'll see, mate.  You may be right that Crouch is being treated as surplus to requirements and that Rafa will get rid of him in either January or the summer.

But, it is still possible that Crouch is in Rafa's plans considering that:

1) Rafa believes in rotation.  Meaning that, under this system, a lack of games is not evidence of a falling out necessarily but perhaps indicates that Crouch is valued more for cup matches than for league matches by the gaffer.  Such an approach would be consistent with a rotation policy designed to rest key players from competition to competition.

2) One of the cup competitions that Crouch is getting games in is the Champions League.  Given that Rafa clearly values this competition (some people even worry he over-values it), wouldn't it be strange for him to play a striker he no longer trusts in it?  Of course, Crouch has played both legs against Toulouse and the home match against Marseilles, while not featuring away to Porto so it may be that Crouch isn't being trusted for the (perceived) toughest matches of the CL either.  Time will tell on that front.

As I say, I'm not convinced either way yet.  Crouch's lack of minutes has surprised me so far but I'm still not sure he's on his way out the door.  Perhaps it was Rafa's idea all along to use him more in the cups.  More likely, IMO, is that Crouch has been off form relative to the other strikers and that Rafa has limited his playing time accordingly.  In either case, I think that there's still time for Crouch to show his value to the side and re-establish himself in Rafa's plans.  If he does get the nod on Saturday, he will need to do the business.  Yes, I'm sure his lack of minutes has cost him a lot of match sharpness but I still think the onus is on him to up his game and change Rafa's thinking.

I still have traces of doubt in this topic.

We all have seen that Rafa doesn't hesitate to offload a player when he's not convinced with him, even when he brought him: Gonzalez, Morientes, and Bellamy are different cases of different nationalities.

So if Rafa had a problem with Crouch in summer, he would have tried to offload him especially considering that there was more than one club involved.

In the other hand, I think it's unlikely that from that situation, Crouch loses the confidence of the manager so early. The season is long, and I think that the share of minutes of Crouchy in the league will be bigger as the season advances

Ciggy points out quite correctly

woooooooooooooooooahhhhhhhhhhhh you've got the worst midfield in the world...
coz Carsley's a slaphead,
Neville's an inbred,
and Cahill's a :censored: @rsehoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooole.

:D And Arteta paints the crown of his head to hid a baldness !

Sabre, Bob, i think something has gone on either in training or behind closed doors anyway.
He will get more minutes than he has been getting because Rafa will have to...to protect the other players.
But he seems to genuinley either lost faith in him...or is annoyed by his attitude in training or something, there is no other explanation to him being so brutally discarded.

very nervous and not too optimistic about this. rafa tends to pick weak sides immediatley after international breaks and everton are gonna be well up for this one.
Steve Gerrard Gerrard,
He'll pass the ball 40 yards,
He's quick and he's f*cking hard,
Steve Gerrard Gerrard.

im gonna be all happy go lucky about this, been disappointed in the past but what the hell im gonna have faith in my beloved team.

reina
finnan  carra  hyypia  arbeloa

pennant  gerrard  alonso  riise

             voronin
                     torres

Good defensively, maybe slightly lacking on the left flank but i wouldnt put babel in this game. think they could cope with any threat everton pose and if alonso aint upto it bring on the argentinian. I feel that we will win this comfortably, will be hairy first 20 minutes but we will get into our stride.

2-0

Come on lads!

Why do i get such a bad feeling about this match. If Torres is injured i think we should just pack our midfield so we can dominate possesion.

Xabi Alonso feeling the special derby athmosphere Oct 18 2007

by Ian Doyle, Liverpool Daily Post

LIVERPOL will look to kickstart their campaign with victory in the Goodison derby against Everton on Saturday.

Xabi Alonso retains an outside chance of being available after returning to training following the broken metatarsal that has ruled him out since mid-September.

And the Spain midfielder yesterday hit back at talk that Liverpool’s foreign contingent do not have the same regard for the fixture as the local players.

"I don’t know how you would compare who feels what, but the foreign lads always know it’s a special game," said Alonso.

"You pick up on the atmosphere when you’re out and about, of course. Everyone on both sides can’t wait for kick-off - it’s a really big day for the city. We know how much it means to the people. They have family who might support the other team and they talk about it.

"The excitement is the same among the players. I’m looking forward to it.

"But it’s against the other team from this city, and for the fans it means a lot.

"I don’t know if it means more for the local lads than the foreign players, but I’m pretty sure we’ll be as committed as them."

So Torres and Xabi could both be back! Great. Especially Xabi. That means we might also see Gerrard back too.

If all these things are true, then I predict we will win this one by an own goal scored by that blabbering sh*tstain Stubbs, by a bullet of a header from the edge of our own penalty area.

Freaks of nature aside (Sorry Phil and Alan) I'm just looking for a solid performance and a 1-0 here.

I am not going to try and guess tomorrows line up, havnt got a clue where to start.

Pretty sure it is too early for Agger but we will have to wait and see about Alonso and Torres, if both are fit both will start IMO.

Rafa may be thinking about putting Gerrard on the right but the fact that Pennant and Benayoun have been training all week and Masch has done plenty of air miles, i assume that Gerrard will keep his place in the middle.

Up top is anyones guess.

All i know is that man for man we are far better than these guys, lets go teach them a lesson and get our season back on track.

COME ON REDMEN!!

Really excited and at the same time worried about this game. Everton are always up for the derby, but we need to beat them, and it would be an extremely sweet victory if we did (especially after that little mishap of a game at Woodison last year). We desperately need Torres fit imo (wow, bet you hadn't figured that one out yourself :D ), as he offers something none of our other strikers do, namely pace and the ability to do something one on one. If he isn't going to be fit, we won't have much of a goal threat from upfront (though I have a sneaky feeling Voronin might score if played). I still think we'll be able to win without Torres of course, but he would definitely increase the chance of a win.

Anyway, it's going to be interesting to se what team Rafa puts out, and I would say it's anyones guess (this time even more so than normally), what with the internationals, the injuries, the important games coming up against Besiktas and Arsenal etc. This, however, is my stab at the starting lineup for tomorrow (who I think Rafa will pick, not necessarily my own preference):

Reina

Finnan
Carra
Hyypia
Arbeloa

Pennant
Gerrard
Alonso (if unfit Momo)
Riise (could maybe be Benayoun, as he returned early from international duty, but I just think he'll stick to Riise, who has been at the club for a long time and knows how the derbies are like, and then use Benayoun as an impact player instead)

Torres (I think he'll at least be on the bench, and if that's the case Voronin will probably play from begin on)
Kuyt (don't know whether he's fit actually, and would rather see Crouch or Voronin next to Torres, but I just think Rafa prefers Kuyt if ready)

This team should be able to beat Everton, but whatever the team will be: bring on tomorrow!
