On the subject of big name signings would you consider Diouf at a price of 10 million pounds and being african player of the year twice and also having a great world cup being one of these `big name Players `?

Not really mate. What I meant was a player at the height of his powers, Diouf was and still is potential. Also his second african player of the year was when he had already signed for us. The 10 mill reflected the market which as I said was turnd upside down by tv money etc. By big name I was more thinkin of players that have already established themselves. Thanks for the repost though.

Good thought out Post "The Bench" and a welcome addition to the forum ................

I agreed witha lot of your introductory post and this last season has proved that you don't necassarily have to spend loads to win the honours. Porto, Valencia and to a leser extent Arsenal proved its not so much how much you spend but how well you speand.

Stu the red made posted an excellent response detailing relatively "unknown" players who have gone on to be major names in world football, pity for LFC that we didn;'t buy enough of them !!!!

In benitez we appear to have acquired an astute manager who gets the best out of his players and has them performinga s a team. Don't forget that essentially Valencia are a selling club but that didn't affect Benitez's ability to compete against the likes of Madrid and Barca.

I know many fans are a little concerned at his relative inactivity in the transfer market but I'm not too concerned to be honest. At Liverpool the fans have always trusted the manager and rushing to buy so called "big" named players to pacify the impatience of fans is always a poor move.

Walk on ...........

I agree with what you are saying about not rushing out and buying big named players, instead settling for lesser known players, but how often will a club pluck an unknown out of obscurity and turn him into a world class player? Clubs sometimes can't afford to waste time on unknown/young players for them to turn out as average with no prospects at their club and need quick fixes to satisfy their requirements.

One of GH's favourite subjects when talking about the club was the "culture". Well over the past few weeks there has been a change of culture, actually more a reversion if you will.

Talk of gradual catch up and 5 year plans have gone out the window. What we have instead is a statement of intent from Rafa the Gaffer that we will "fight" for the title. I love that word "fight", that's all I want to see.

I don't mind losing, or even losing heavily as long as we battle to the last. A bit of passion can go a long way and I can see that passion burning in Senor Benitez's eyes. The man is a winner. From what can be gathered from his previous clubs he doesnt take fools gladly and we unfortunately have a few at our club at the moment. That isn't though to say those players won't be given a chance to put things right under Rafa and prove a few people wrong, but let them be warned.

It's not good enough to be "one of" the best teams in England, not any more. It's time that we were THE best team in England and I believe we have the man to take us there.

THAT should be the only ambition.

I'm not saying that things will change overnight, not at all, but what I am saying is that I'm as optimistic now as I was when we finished 2nd behind Arsenal when it seemed like it was predestined that we would win the league under Gérard. But as Ringo Starr once said "that's a different story".

:)

St Michael, what makes you believe that Rafa is the man to make us the best team in England, apart from the fact that

1 - we have been starved of success over the last decade
2 - of course we will say that, because we love the club

Were you saying that when GH took over??? Why was we all clamouring for Mourinho, when he was available???

We do not know whether rafa is the man, until a period of time elapses under his control.............surely!

This always amazes me. I WANT success like everyone else, but I will not pass judgement until at least the final day of the 2004/05 campaign. Trophies and success only tell the story

the confidence stems from the fact that rafa is a proven winner and is doing all he can to instill a winning mentality into every one of his players. last season we had the players to have a very good team but played poorly.
this year we have a new record signing striker who looks well suited to the english game and we have all got much higher expectations of the man Baros after top scoring at the euros. personally for me the optomism comes from the fact that we have 3 strikers capable of scoring 25 goals a season, weve got a new defender with pace to play alongside sammi and weve got a lot of players who by their standards underperformed last year.
surely players like finnan, riise, kewell, and even to a lesser extent owen will not have as bad seasons as they did last year. the manager is well known for playing simple, effective passing football which is what we need. apparently we kept the ball for 70% of the first half last night against celtic.
also when houllier arrived i was not too pleased as he was the man who cast ginola into the international wilderness as a scapegoat for not reaching usa94

the level of improvement rafa will give us is obviously impossible to judge but all the signs point to a much better season than the last 2 :;):

the fact that he won la liga twice in the last three seasons despite having inferior players to the likes of barcelona and real madrid. i'm not saying he'll bring immediate success but if he can get us playing anything like valencia then we will see a standard of one touch play which we haven't seen at anfield for years.

also, no i didn't say the same when houllier came because the guy had no track record of winning anything major of note.

I suppose the price tag points to the over inflated transfer market more than the quality of player and i guess that the african player of the year is not a big a name as the european player of the year .

you are a major tosspot and Ive never liked you! You think you are older and wiser than you actually are! When you reach the age of 30 you will realise that you made a a big mistake!

How the f**k do you know what the Liverpool way is?, you werent even born when Liverpool were winning European Cups you knob. You were only just learing how to read and write (if indeed you can) when the likes of souness took over management 14 years ago or so, so all youve ever known is ****** footy and what your parents tell you about the Liverpool of old.
the players you mentioned above Viera, Melchiot, Gallas, Anelka etc(didnt anelka play for real madrid, el thicko???), A lot of these players are Internationals and very well known on the continent, and a lot of them were playing for top clubs abroad before moving to the premier league.

you dont think its possible for me to be a bodybuilder? why not. is it not possible to lift weights then?
Listen I could use u as a weight in one of my sessions and swing you around, then throw you in the mersey!
Just so you can have your first wash!

I think you are getting way out of your league in terms of knowledge and everything else.

i dont care whether people like me or dont like me in these forums, ase they are annonymous. but im sure in equal measure, they dont like you much too either as you are an annoying little sh*t!

Ill post here for as long as i like!!! if they ban me, Ill come back again! If they ban  my IP address, ill buy a laptop and use that!

You sound, by your posts like, a cocky ,mouthy little scally, if i was to picture you in my head, with yer shell suit and trainees, on the rob and shoplifting! and yes I didnt like Houllier cause he is a Loser and was dragging the club down. Murphy is kack and will be found out very soon By benitez.

Listen, whether you believe it or not, I weigh 16 stone and im no Anfield Pie eater with a big gut either, and will take you out anytime! going to the City Game are you? opening home game of the season. Where u sitting? Id love to know

Im pumped up, fired up and ready to go! you are a major tosspot and Ive never liked you! You think you are older and wiser than you actually are! When you reach the age of 30 you will realise that you made a a big mistake!

Sorry boys but i have to reply to this. I'm not goin to insult the lad, just point one or two things out. :)

I don't like you either... who cares? You'll get over it. By the way, what are you talking about? I thought you were 27? So how would you know what its like to e 30?

Also, I think you should check your dates, if i was born in 83.....

Tell you what else aswell... it would be pretty clever of me if i could use an internet chat forum as much as i do if i couldn't read wouldn't it? :D

My parents never have and never will like football. I have one uncle who likes the game who i used to go to matches with. Thats all. :)

As for the players i mentioned... You hadn't heard of ANY of them before the clubs over here had signed them as i said. Who'd heard of Vieira while he was at Milan? He'd played about 4 or 5 games wasn't it? Anelka played how many before he played for Arsenal? So go on Mr Knowledge... who did all these players play for before coming over here? Who'd heard of them? The most famous on that list was probably Gallas or Petit. At the time i'd not even heard of them.

Am not arsed if you are a bodybuilder, wouldn't suprise me with an ego like urs.

The difference is lad, i don't talk ******.

Centenary back row lower tier seat 87 or 88. Under the Echo board.

Being a body builder doesn't make you hard and doesn't mean you can fight. Trust me. :)
