Last week A good friend of mine went away for a week to bulgaria and asked me to look after his flat. That same week my brother went to butlins.
My mate paid a total sum of £325 including flights and accomodation. He paid for gifts, his food, nights out and it all came to £325. The gifts being a bottle of whiskey, 2 bags of sweets for my kids, a bottle of shower lotion and a couple of keyrings.

My brother took his family to butlins. It cost him £260 knock down price for accomodation with it being off season, and spent over £520 on food, nights out and gifts. The gifts being two fridge magnets.

Now my friend managed to buy a good bottle of whiskey for a price of, what worked out as £3.50, my brother paid £3.50 for a burger here in britain !

Why oh why is it so expensive here? There really is no excuse.
More and more people are moving abroad and it really is easy to see why.

definitely cheaper where i am mate, in the supermarket a big bottle of Heineken is about 50 p, big mac meal is 1.20p, a gallon of petrol is 1.25p, my electric bill (with aircon dont forget) is about 10 quid a month, meat is cheap, fruit is cheap, taxis are cheap etc etc etc

I can believe that. Its shocking how expensive the UK is, Like I said my mate went abroad and had a great week for a cheap price, yet my brother stayed here in the UK and its almost ruined him.

yeah but we have a health service and decent road structure and a lot of other things that some countries dream of. Things dont come free.

yeah we have mud huts as hospitals and dirt tracks as motorways.

seriously mate do you really think there is no infrastructure here, the roads are great, just clogged with traffic, the government hospitals are on a par with the NHS hospitals and the private hospitals that i use are brilliant, like hotels, i pay less than 200 quid a year for health insurance.

the dentists are also cheap and very good, the majority of dentists and doctors are trained in the west so they are good standard, in fact many people come out here now for surgery and dentistry.

we dont live in the jungle mate, i live in a city of 12 million people, there is great wealth in this city as well as poverty, just like in the UK funnily enough, but products are cheap and tax is cheap, my road tax is about a tenner a year as is my car insurance

I agree. Where I am (Belfast) things are dear as f*ck. But if I go further south, then it's even worse. Celtic Tiger my bollox. The price of your holiday to Bulgaria would get you a sandwich with enough change for a packet of fegs down south. I blame the knackers!

Yeah a health service where you go into hospital with a minor cut that requires stitches and they take your arm off because they are so filfthy you get MRSA!

Roads that are so great it takes the average person over an hour to move 3 feet in major cities!

it's all relative though, bulgaria must be a very cheap place to be if you're from the UK where the average full time weekly earnings are around £450. but if you're FROM bulgaria then suddenly £2 for a packet of cigs or £10 for a 3 course meal doesn't look so cheap when you only earn about £75 a week

it works the other way round for scandinavians coming to the UK - they're in amazement that you can go to the pub and get absolutely wrecked for £20. try doing that in oslo where it's about £5 a pint :wwww

britain is still bloody overpiced though, if you compare countries with a similar economy and population. i was in france in the summer and whilst drink in the bars tends to be dear, EVERYTHING else is way cheaper. going to a big supermarket there is great - all the fresh produce looks a million times better than in the uk yet costs much less. petrol, cigs, everything is cheaper. christ there aren't even any pay & display car parks anywhere - it's all free. even in paris i managed to get an underground secure car park for 2 nights for 23 euros, about £16. parking in manchester costs nearly that for one fecking day :angry:

i was also in germany earlier in the year (cologne) and even there it's noticeably cheaper than the uk and yet they all drive nice cars and earn shedloads of money. all our money is going somewhere and i'd love to know WHERE :angry:

That's only partly true...Salaries - on average - are higher down here....Yes, property, entertainment etc. is marginally higher, but the national minimum wage is higher too....

I'm originally from Co. Limerick, but I've not been down there since we went EU. I personally think the whole place would benifit if it were all the same, but as it is, the north seems to pay more for stuff, even more so for other places in the UK that use the pound. I don't get it.

It makes we wonder, if things are so expensive now, can you imagine what would happen if the government got things there way. Everybody stops smoking, and eating (that way we can all receive the NHS treatment were paying for), drinking, cut down on the driving.
Thats no taxes paid on all them things in which the government are trying to cut out. Because everybody will eventually give them all up if they have there way.
Our money is ours. So how will the governments policies of today benefit us in the future? Not looking good is it?
