Reina - Could be poached

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I read about this earlier and tbh I see no reason to be worried, he's undoubtably first choice here and has a contract until 2012 (I think). We are a team going places and Athletico are not.

watched him play for villa in a couple of games recently... don't like him that much... I think he still has some way to go... doesn't mean that he won't improve though...

player of the season for charlton? but where is charlton now?

right now he looks like another robinson... when he jumps he doesn't seem to be light and athletic... I rate david james higher than both of them... only if he can focus on football instead of video games  :D

Big Sams been playing Harper while Given's been injured, he was back for the Wigan game but Sam still opted for Harper saying 'he hasn't let me down yet and as long as he doesn't he stays'

Rafa has just rubbished the claim, blaming the inexperience of the journalist.

I wouldn't worry if I were you.

I think the only other team he'd consider joining is Barcelona - he may feel he has some unfinished business there.

Rafa has said a lot of praises about Reina, he's not usually that generous with praises

From the tv site

Rafael Benitez will send his side out into Champions League action tonight boasting he has one of the world's best goalkeepers between the posts.
Pepe Reina has made an impressive start to the new campaign, conceding goals only from the penalty spot against Aston Villa and Chelsea.

He's the only goalkeeper in the top flight not to have let a goal in from open play, and was the Reds' hero at the weekend when he kept out Kanu's penalty at Portsmouth to save a point for his side.

"If you watch Reina in training every day, you'll see that he is a fantastic worker, he has a very good mentality and a lot of confidence in himself,” says Benitez.

"For us, he is very important. He is more mature, he's learning every day and his team-mates know that he is really, really important and is one of the best two or three goalkeepers in the world.

"People say Pepe has problems in certain areas of his game, but I think he's fantastic. He has adapted well to the English style, he knows when to catch and when to punch. Petr Cech and Buffon are some of other best goalkeepers in the world, and maybe there are two or three as good as Reina but not many.

"It's difficult to say how many points Pepe is worth a season. But the keeper is always important in a team. If you analyse our team, in defence we are good but with Pepe there we are much better.

"He can make one or two mistakes but that's normal as he is the goalkeeper, and the managers and the other players do the same at times.

"But Pepe can save in a season hundreds of opportunities. It's not just about making saves. The best goalkeeper in the world isn't the one who makes the most saves. It's about not allowing the strikers to score, by reading the game and giving the defenders a lot of confidence. His team-mates trust him. They know that he is top class and they have confidence in him."

I think Rafa's assessment of Reina there is fair.

Apart from Cech and Buffon I can't think of any other keepers off the top of my head that I'd say are better than him.  Certain keepers like Given and Van Der Saar may be considered by some to be better shot stoppers than Reina, and that may be true.  There are certainly better keepers at coming for crosses.  But overall, in terms of presence, decision making, coming off his line, shot stopping, agility and of course penalties, few are better than Reina.

Carson I don't rate as a top class keeper.  His concentration and ability to read certain situations lets him down badly.  He is however a good shot stopper and will look good in a mid-lower table team as he'll get plenty of chances to shine by showing off his shot stopping.  Someone else said it and I agree, he's another Robinson for me - good, but not top class.
