SUNDERLAND VS LIVERPOOL - 12:45 kick off

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

On the issue of Alonso, I would once again highlight that it was his angled ball into the box that led to the first goal (nodded down by Pennant to Voronin, who laid it back to Sissoko)...so credit where credit's due.  And, it's not like we were overrun in midfield--I think he was quiet because he was sitting deep and blocking off passing channels for the likes of Yorke to play balls through to Chopra, forcing them to knock balls over the top.  I'm not saying it was Xabi's best game ever in a red shirt but nor was he off the pace or out of his depth.

Enjoyable match.

I thought we played well. Would have had it wrapped up quickly but their goalkeeper was good today.

Torres and Voronin worked well together. Good goals. Nice to see Momo get his first ever LFC goal.

Definitely not just you.

As soon as we signed him, I said it to my mate.  My mate remembers the text I sent him.  "Sissoko looks like a young Bill Duke."  That's the text.

Love Duke.  He's in Red Dragon as well, the Hannibal Lecter film, and Commando.

Buzz off Duke.  :bowdown

Thought it was a solid win but i cant stop thinking about how many good positions Torres put himself in only to not finnish them. Something about Voronin makes me cringe most likely that 70s porn hair lol. Good to see Momo get one in i think he is a really solid player hope he doesnt get phased out this year.

I only caught the last 15 minutes of the game so I couldn't really comment on how we did... but I must tell ya this... the move that led us to the 2nd goal made us look like Brazil in the 1994 tournament! 4 players running at the opponent's defense and interchanging neat short passes! superb move! haven't seen that kinda thing from us for quite some time...

pennant is starting to get my respect... i think if he keeps this up he'll be a permanent fixture in rafa's starting 11. as for alonso, I won't criticize him for one bad game... I know he's a class player but I also can't help but wonder why mascherano's not getting games...

why is everyone saying Sissoko had a good game? yes he kicked a goal, but for the rest of the game his passing and decision making are still terrible!!

agreed and 2 out of the 3 times he lost the ball it wasn't his fault its the people around you that need to call "man on ".
So you know you got some one sneaking up behind you. As far as i know footballers still dont have eyes in the back of there heads and it is a team game after all.

I've said this ages ago that he needs to work on his tackling and passing. He can get a little careless sometimes.

Yep hands up, I "slag" the rotation methods that Benitez employs, and it paid off for him today.

It was a good result out there at the Stadium of light, but TBH Sunderland didnt look anywhere near as good as us (at times) in terms of quality. Even at 1-0 I couldnt envisage Sunderland coming back into the game like the fortunate Chelsea the week before. But at 1-0 up away from home in th 60th minute or so you still cant help but have that slight feeling that our opponents nick a scrappy goal from somewhere.

I thought the first half was pretty dire from a football 'purest's' point of view. We were guilty in adding to that, with Carra, Finnan and Agger looking to knock it long. It was the stereotypical game that English teams are renound for playing. It left me feeling frustrated at times as we constantly bypassed the midfiled with long ball after longball. Leaving the Voronater and Torres to fight it out for the high balls, and TBH if it wasnt for Momo's excellent strike I couldnt see a goal coming from us in that first half. Although the lead to that goal was probably the best bit of football we played in that half.

Fancy that Momo scoring our 7000th goal, and his first for Liverpool :D  What were the odds on that I wonder ?

Second half we were better and did try and play more football I felt, coupled with the fact we had enough chances to be out of sight, the performance would of looked a lot better. Both Torres and Voronin had there chances to put us in a more comfortable position. Although the Spaniard didnt score and maybe should of, its pleasing enough to see a Liverpool striker get in good goalscoring positions to start with. We may have been punished on another day, and I'd say we may well pay that price over the course of the season in other fixtures but ...

Momo and Alonso played okay together I thought, but we were at times being overrun ? No not overrun but we were being outnumbered, but still I dont think Alonso had that bad a game as some might suggest. He did venture further forward now and again and his lovely little chip over to Torres who was a toe-nail away from clipping it past the promising Goalkeeper Gordon. Thats what we need Alonso to do more of, he did have an attempt in the first half that drifted wide, but again thats would he should do more of. He probably thought the onus was on him a bit more as without Gerrard, he may of felt the need to get forward a bit more and try and make something happen in the final third. Defensively he was his usual consistent self and played the ball around well.

Babel was a little dissapointing, and almost seemed invisible out there at times, while the lad has very good feet, he needs to involve himself more into our play. But as the old cliche goes, Babel I think will need a good season to properly settle and gain his confidence, there is no doubting technically he looks very good. And as we saw with Pennant it came take time to settle, but speaking of Pennant, I thought he was excellent again for us today. A constant thorn in the Black Cats side with his energy and running, he had some nice touches and looked our most likeliest player from whom a goal would come, again second week in the row he gets my MotM.

Arbeloa to impressed me again another player with good feet on the ball, technically a very good player and he maybe a rock for Riise or Aurelio to budge from LB.

All in all happy with the result, decent performance, although we could of paid for not finnishing them off which would be my only concern, plus the injury to Carra of course. :)
