I do not buy into this ‘swings and roundabouts’ notion, it introduces a supernatural element within football, which the game could do without.
The Aston Villa match is irrelevant here, as the standard of refereeing in the Villa match last week was significantly higher than the match against Chelsea. Rob Styles was in front of the incident as it happened and for some reason gave the penalty after a nice acrobatic display from Malouda. The Petrov incident could be deemed as obstruction and no doubt was.
The forgotten point in all of this is that regardless of which team has the rub of the green, Liverpool’s problem still lies up front, the team creates plenty, but converts little and until this changes, the team will find themselves in a similar situation where a similar incident costs the club points on the board.
If Kuyt, Babel and Alonso converted the chances they were presented with, it would have been 4-1 and the penalty wouldn’t have made any difference other than to the goal difference.
Rob Styles has been suspended for week and named and shamed, lets leave it at that and concentrate on battering Sunderland to get the much needed points and confidence boost.
