LIVERPOOL VS CHELSEA - Early build-up - looking good for us

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Total bollox.

Torres goal was great, but the ref's decisions made no sense.

Malouda jumped into Finnan and Rob Styles gave either Essien or Terry two yellow cards, so at least one of those charvers should have been sent off.

We wuz robbed Rob Styles style.

Wilhelmsson wrote:I’m completely furious, but not overly surprised Chelsea managed to get a point out of the match. I have a few points I would like to get off of my chest.

1) Its about time referees and linesmen were accountable for their decisions. Rob Styles should consider a career somewhere else, because that has to be the worst display of refereeing I have witnessed.

If Managers are accountable for the team they are in charge, players are accountable for their performances and conduct, and then referees should be accountable and open to scrutiny.

Rob’s two terrible decisions completely changed the complexion and outcome of what was to a large extent a Liverpool dominated match.

2) Kuyt seems ineffective; I don’t usually single out criticism for a player, but Kuyt seems to me to be little more than a work horse, there doesn’t seem to be an end product with his work ethic.

3) The team still isn’t scoring enough goals, if the team had converted the chances wasted then the atrocious penalty decision wouldn’t have made any difference to the outcome of the match. If the players aren’t converting chances, then these types of decisions will cost us points.

There are some positives, the team didn’t lose today, there is a game in hand for the team to go out and collect three points.

Four points from the first two matches isn’t something to begrudge, the matches have been two challenging games to play in quick succession and the team has shown a lot of character and improvement. The test now is to carry on performing as the team has done in the two matches and build the momentum.

The Gerrard and Alonso partnership seems to be flourishing, I would have liked Mascherano to have played a part in the team, he would have bossed the Chelsea midfield and maybe the pendulum would have remained in Liverpool’s favour.

Today was disappointing, but the season has just begun, the team has gotten two challenging matches out of the way now and can focus on picking up more points against ‘lesser’ teams. I’m not letting today put a dampener on what has been an impressive start to the season.

I Think there should be a match rating for refs and a league .

If you are botton of the league at the end of the season or bottom two . You have to go down to the championship and Ref there.

Rob Styles awards a penalty, as seen from the Kop end.

stevie g was right, why shouldn't refs come out and explain there poor performances when players have to do it all the time. styles ruined what was a great game of football as a spectacle and was to blame for us not getting 3 points.

Yeah...we waz robbed! sickening!..

Torres was excellent...beauty of a goal!

Terry should be stripped of his England captaincy...he's a disgrace...headbutting Torres...now that's a great example to set isn't it!  :no

The match was ours and we deserved it, but stolen away by the ref who didn't seem to know what he was doing...

but watch your backs cheatski...we'll be back!!

Just got back now. Haven't seen the pen again yet but it sounds like it was as soft as it looked. VERY VERY impressed with Torres today. This lad looks an absolute gem to me, we've finally got ourself a player who will scare the sh.i..t out of the best back-lines in the business.

I'm going to bed zzzzz

I’d imagine Benitez bought Pennant off because Pennant was getting hot headed on the pitch, which could have led to a rash lunge and a second yellow card. Is this another post designed to have a sly criticism of Benitez? I felt Benitez set the team up accordingly and the team came out of the blocks well, the problem was not taking chances.

Kuyt and Alonso had fabulous chances to put the game beyond all doubt; both were squandered as per usual. There is no reason to criticise Benitez today, because his tactics and team selection was very good, very capable of collecting the three points.

nothing wrong with criticising rafa...

i'm a rafa fan and i will keep him for at least 6 years before i think about sacking him if i owned liverpool... but pennant was torturing cole again... plus babel looks better playing on right... plus riise wasn't doing too well... so i would have replaced riise with babel... instead of replacing pennant... and if you intend to bring on crouch... it makes even more sense to keep a winger who can cross... other than that rafa did a good job...

You make me sick lad and people like you! FU.CK OFF!

Riise had a great game today especially in the first half he was id say the difference apart from Gerrard...go and watch a game ya tool!

Players need time and minutes on the pitch..its really only worth making mass changes if we are getting duffed and that never happened today ,not from Chelsea..only folk like you!

WAN>KER!!

what the :censored: are you talking about?

what mass changes? when did i ever say we needed mass changes? at least try to understand what you read first.

listen you twit...I said when rafa brought on babel... which is in the 68th minute... he should have substituted riise instead of pennant... riise was becoming ineffective in the second half... pennant was still torturing cole down the right...

and if crouch is gonna come on later on it's more suitable with penant supplying the crosses to him... I never said anything about :censored: mass changes you twit...

when people were putting up a thread on riise and discussing about whether he is good enough for liverpool... i'm the one that said riise is the least of our worries... when people were critical about rafa's achievements in the first 3 ears... i'm one of those that said we should keep rafa for at least 6 years... I don't :censored: criticise anyone just for fun... but I will be critical where it's due... so if you don't like what i say go :censored: screw yourself or something...

riise didn't have a great game... he had far better games... even his first half... penant had a great game and HE was the difference apart from gerrard... he and torres who managed to scored a goal from a seemingly harmless position... try to understand a :censored: game...

'Players need time and minutes on the pitch?'... riise would have had 68 minutes if rafa substituted him for babel...

you're a :censored: joke...

s@int wrote:Gerrard was outstanding until he faded a bit late in the game. I am still not happy with the Alonso and Gerrard partnership though. Riise again worked hard but to little effect, his inability to beat a player really does hamper his game and hard work.

Gerrard was obviously tiring because he was a colossus in the 1st half (he defended, put in last ditch tackles, helped out in attack...how much he can do). And you have to take into consideration
the trip to france and all.

I actually thought Gerrard & Alonso partenership did pretty well. At least they performed better than at villa. But i can't
help but feel that gerrard has to do a lot more defending when playing with alonso than with the mash monster. So i am
still puzzled as to what to make of this situation.... I would personally prefer Gerrard & Mash. Think Mash is the younger, better and faster
version of makalade & hamann. And i like these type of anchor-man would would make our already good defence more water-tight.

But I am sure rafa had promised alonso a lot more playing time when he offerred him the new contract. This and the fact that Mash's
transfer is still not permenant all adds up to Gerrard & Alonso being the 1st choice pairing. I also think Alonso game revolves around our wing players running
into space so he can hit those diagonal balls to them. Pennant does it. Riise doesn't do it (Not a fan when riise plays LW. He is very one diamentional).
If kewell was around, maybe Alonso contribution will be more visable.

Anyway......I wanted at least a draw...and we got it. By the looks of it...chelsea are the hardest team to beat this season and we
made them look ordinary.

Don't be fooled into the "carvellho injured and chelsea playing a weaker team senario". Ben Haim is a very good CB himself.

We were also missing kewell (who still remains our most natural LW).... If kewell is still injured, then i think its time
to put yossi as a LW instead of riise.

And chelsea are gonna be easy pickings at stamford bridge without drogba and essien. Their play so much revolves around drogba that without him
they look lost.....I can see us picking up 3 points at stamford bridge as long as the ref isn't mike reily and stylish robber.

Utterly rubbish call from Styles cost us a deserved victory but I take great heart from the performance.  Sure, we could have had a bit more rub of the green in front of goal but we played some lovely stuff at times and the Torres goal was an absolute gem...I'm well made up for the lad (and loved his instinctive winding up of Terry...well in, son! ;D ).  To be gutted because we dropped two points to Chelsea rather than grateful for the point speaks volumes about how the bar has been raised.  I like how things are taking shape this season so far. :nod
