After reading this thread, this is one of the few statements that rings true! Really, I know we didn't win, and yes we should have won, but those who are slating the team and speaking of defeatist comments like " Villa will be a draw" and " we've no hope of winning the league" based on this game, should really hang their head's in shame to call themselves Liverpool supporters

I have to say mate I do agree with you on this, although I appear to be one of the more critical posters on here at times. I think its way over the top to right our season off after a few pre-season friendlies.

Although I didnt see the game I did watch the goals posted up in this thread. And I must say Riise only needed to step up to catch their winger offside. Lets hope he wakes up before the season starts. :D

Riise definately needs stiff competition at L.B he needs to be kept on his toes.

I just dont see this team suddenly changing into an expansive side in the 6 days.  It isnt going to happen.  All these pre-season games have had us playing the same way as last season. Like it or not the Manager just does not have it in him to open up.

The performance was average again which i dont have a problem with aslong as there saving there energy for the villa game. I think we will see the same team that started the game v Villa bar a few exceptions. Mascherano for Alonso. Finnan for Arbeloa and Torres for Voronin

ok so we did not win. you could say we did not play well.
but there are a few points i feel that need to be made.

We should have won, the ball was over the line so we won 2-1

the team line up is not going to be what we put out , the back 4 will change.

up front will also change

its what the best type of game for us to get right before we start the real thing.

it was great to see some pasion from our player in such a small game.

it still shows that Rafa has not worked out his firast team yet

Kuyt's strike was a goal but I dont expect a linesman to give that as it was impossible to determine the ball crossed the line. The result doesnt even bother me, its the way we play that does that.

I thought the point of pre-season was to try things out? We have lots of new players and have given them a go. As far as i know we haven't lost a game (Pompey was a draw over the 90), so in that respect it was successful. We are not going to play like Arsenal, thats not Rafa's style, like it or lump it, he is a fairly conservative manager, keeping it tight at the back and solid in midfield are his hallmark, and then create enough chances to score a couple, and we just might have the strikers this year to put away the chances and not waste them. I don't see us being the most exciting team to watch, but aslong as we win i couldn't give a :censored:.

One thing that has annoyed me this pre-season is that Kuyt is still dropping back too much, playing everywhere except in the 18yd box, IMO he needs to restrict his defensive duties to the final third of the pitch, and more central, then if play breaks down he is in the right place to take a chance.

Although i don't want anyone sent off, i was glad to see the boys all piled in when a bit of trouble flared up, that has been missing for years, at least it shows that team spirit is there. Rafa must have learnt a fair bit about formations, partnerships, etc. and that is what the games were about.

That conservative style will not win us a championship.  We need to score more goals.  Away from home last season we our goals for record away from home was one of the lowest in the league. That wasnt down to the strikers but down to the way we play.  If we continue like that the results will not change.

Well we may aswell sack him now, because i don't see him changing.

Chelsea and Mourinho are even more conservative than us, Defence first, one up front, and have won two titles, second place, 3 CL semis, Fa and Carling cup, So i think it might just work......remember the 1-0 to the Arsenal chant...they also manged to win titles under Graham, and we are not as defensive as either of them.

IMO it was down to the strikers, we still created some chances, but didn't take them, crosses came in but were not attacked,we dont need to score lots of goals, just one more than the opponents.

well consevative style or not.....some of the pre-season games i watched IMO, it looked like our play in and around the box was much better. the linking up play was better and more players were involved (APART FROM GERRARD! sick of that one...) and we looked dangerous when we went forward.

yesterday much of the match was played with voronin and kuyt up front...both were switching between playing deep or more upfront, but i saw both of them spend more time in midfield which is what id expect with both of them playing together tbh....think one or the other should play not both together....but anyway the point is, out of the new buys only one was playing for most of the match, and torres came on the wing (just as a trial) and benayoun and babel later on too.

of course we looked like we did last year, cos last year's team (apart from vornin & kewell) were playing most of the match!
the constant changing of formations in the 2nd half with the subs meant we looked all over the place at times, but we still managed to score.....oh yeah forgot, it was all stevie. :D

Well, I tend to smile when I read that Liverpool's game is conservative (2 strikers, with an attacking mid reaching to the box plenty, we dominate games away etc) but the real funny bit is the "won't win us the championship". I was bored to read for 2 years how effective and lucky was Chelsea because they won their games always by 1-0.

At least we're not getting as ridiculous as Real Madrid who sack managers after winning titles because the game is "not attacking enough". By the way, I doubt very much Drenthe was a cheaper target than Babel, as he's been targeted and discarded by Real Madrid, so that means the price had to be ridiculous.

Redtrader makes a very good point about the fight. With 6 games more in the pocket, Mascha wouldn't have done that bad decission, Gerrard wouldn't have been caught asleep, and Mascherano wouldn't have to have rectified with a 2 legs on front tackle. But the important thing is that Agger got there to defend the mate quickly, Reina appeared like a steaming train to get off Agger from trouble, and that's nice, "it makes team".

chelsea still scored more goals than us in the 3 years Morinho has been here.  The 1st two seasons wasnt 1 up front.  Robben & Duff were pushed up as front men.

Arsenal did win titles under Graham but also under Graham they never dominated.  They never won back to back titles.  Arsenal fans would hate to go back to that style of play as under Wenger they are entertained.  They aint won any titles in a few years but many would argue they get to see the best football in the league and its only a matter of time before those kids lead them to the title.

We dont create enough chances.  Creating 1 or two genuine chances v mediocre opposition isnt enough.  In the majority of games we had superior possession but didnt do enough with it.

My point on conservative was compared to Arsenal or even Manu for that matter, they seem to want to out score the opposition, and we want to make sure the opposition don't score, not a bad method either, as it has worked for other sides.

I prefer focussing on one's own game and trying to score than going out with the primary intention of not trying to concede and stopping the other side playing. The idea that we if we open up we will concede more isnt valid considering Utd dont concede many goals and they are as open and expansive as anyone.

How many times did we last season go a goal behind and come back to win.  It seemed to be the case that if we fell behind we were in huge trouble.

Sabre its not just about two strikers.  Its more down to the fact that our centre midfield sits far too deep.  Our full backs dont get forward enough to support the wide players.
