What would happen, or how much time - Rafa and new money

You're right. the excuses will eventually run out.

But what happens if we mount a sustained challenge this year? still up there come Feb, but don't win the title. The point gap reduced to under 5 and no other trophy?

Do we bin him then? I not saying anyone would. Becuase clearly he would be seen to be improving domestically, but it would be another trophless season.

I just want to see improvement... 3 more seasons at least.

For me, Liverpool must improve in three areas.

League Standing:
Maintain 3rd or go better.

Points Gap:
Be much closer to the leaders which consequently means that there will be a title push.

Goal Scoring:
A better attacking approach should net us more goals than last season, which should win us more matches. This is of course, assuming our defense don't suddenly leak goals.

If we don't win the league title but achieve improvement in all three areas, then Rafa should be given more time. This is because all these indicate forward steps towards the title.

Another point of note is who to we get to replace Rafa? Personally, I feel there are very few mangers out there who could do a better job that he is right now.
