I think the problem is more one that if ever we hear/see a quote from anyone connected with (particularly) Manyoo, the mood is always positive.
It's a great source of amusement to me that Lou (manyoo are the only club in the world) Macari is frequently being asked for his opinions on Manyoo. He never says ANYTHING negative about them!!
They could be on the end of a 3-0 spanking and he'll give you a typically one-eyed positive spin on that.
The Liverpool ex players all seem to be a little more honest and candid with their views, they tend not to predict we'll sweep the board just because we're ex Liverpool

Think quite a few ex-lfc players quite harsh on LFC because they don't see eye-to-eye with rafa's tactics and decisions.

I heard Steve Mcmahon once said LFC will never win the title as long as rafa doesn't know his 1st team.

There are others i suppose.

The only way rafa can shut them up if he wins the title soon.

true and and I agree that the mirror is garbage. I actually agree with macca on this one except I think we will come in third and a lot closer to Manure and Chavski.

Ignore the Mirror article - it's actually a very tame interview. Hardly a "blast", put it that way.

Hear what was actually said here

Non-sensationalist report on the same interview from BBC Sport...

McManaman cool on Reds title bid

Liverpool lost to AC Milan in the 2007 Champions League final
Former Liverpool star Steve McManaman admitted the club will struggle to win the Premiership this season despite spending more than £40m on new players.

Liverpool finished 21 points behind Manchester United last season - closer to 12th place than first.

"I certainly think they'll be in the top four," McManaman told Five Live.

"Whether they can win it this year, who knows? They've strengthened, but so have the teams that finished ahead, so it's going to be very difficult."

Liverpool finished third, 15 points behind Chelsea last season. But despite winning the Champions League in 2005 and reaching the final this year, the club won the last of their 18 league championships in 1990.

The Anfield club have been one of the big spenders in this summer's transfer market with forwards Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel, winger Yossi Benayoun and midfielder Lucas Leiva among the more high-profile signings.

And chief executive Rick Parry has hinted at more new arrivals before the transfer window shuts on 31 August.

But McManaman added: "The holy grail for Liverpool is the Premiership but for Man Utd and Chelsea it's the Champions League isn't it?

"Because Liverpool haven't won it in a significant amount of time it's important for them to win the Premiership. But it's going to be difficult."

Liverpool kick off their Premiership campaign at Aston Villa on 11 August.

Positive mental attitude.

At 9 o'clock we were gonna win the league and then 4 minutes later you said you'd be overjoyed if we finished 3 to 7 points behind the leaders..........?
Macca has just given an honest, candid observation on our chances, you however, don't seem to have made your mind up yet.......!!!

Macca has been asked his opinion on the league, and like all ex footballers, it's complicated he says and goes "Mancs are shít, Tottenham are deluded fools". Because they're asked for a knowledgeable opinion, and they tend to be diplomatic with all the clubs, so I understand he upgrades Tottenham despite I disagree.

I disagree, because he says later that money it's not all and doesn't guarantee success, which I agree, and that's why he shouldn't have upgraded Tottenham to the height of Liverpool precisely. Spending won't bring the success to tottenham.

I can't see a bad attack to us, If I'm honest. Just some dull answers to the traditional questions of this time of the summer.

He is only telling the truth and if some people on here think we will win the title this year expect to be dissapointed again.
We will not over take United this season if we had have bought two wold class wingers maybe we would be in with a shout but we havent so we wont win it this coming season.
If we are to win this title we have to start playing attacking football away from home, and our strikers have to play as strikers not in feckin midfield it does my head in.

Paul C wrote:"I think we're talking about the top four or five now Tottenham have spent a lot of money."

"But I still think it will be very difficult to dislodge Man United and Chelsea - as much as everybody else has gone out and spent, they've spent too."

"The spending hasn't stopped really, they've just been buying more players and, the fact there was 21 points between Manchester United and Liverpool last year, it's a big gap."

"After spending money Liverpool fans will definitely expect."

"The Holy Grail for Liverpool fans is the Premiership - for the other big teams it seems to be the Champions League."

There are five quotes in the article.

1) Spurs have spent money, and by the look of it quite well, so its a fair enough quote.

2) United and Chelsea have no doubt added to their squads, so again fair comment.

3) There was a difference of 21 points, and it is a big gap.

4) Liverpool fans will expect even if we dont spend.

5) The only thing that matters is league titles - FACT

So what is the big hoo harr all about ?

Some people need to learn to read about and talk in facts and not spin and sensationalism.

Macca was being honest and after watching our pre-season games so far hes right.  Fergie understands whats required to win the premiership.  Put out as close to your best team as possible and under no circumstances is anything less than three points acceptable when playing teams outside the top four.  Rafa still doesn't grasp that.  He approaches matches against Fulham the same way as he does when playing in europe.

Co-sign.  We still do not looke great in the wide area's and none of our front men like to play on the shoulder.  All of them drop deep.

Look mate Henry, Ronaldino, Eto would struggle to get more than 12 goals a season for us the way we set out to play away from home, Rafa is far to defensive and negative and give the chasing pack to much respect.
The worst thing is no one fears us in the prem we have a massive rep in Europe and Rafa has that boxed off the prem is a different matter.
Until teams start fearing us again like it used to be once upon a time then expect more of the same.

think he is being realistic and honest

i bet hansen would say something similar

we havent added enough quality to keep up with man utd and chelsea in my opinion

we still need a world beating winger and a pacey striker who doesnt come deep and hangs on the shoulder of the last defender

Thats an argument some have been pushing for a while.  In recent years has the striker's goals problem really been down to poor strikers or is more to do with the way we play?  I know Rafa doesnt really believe we need a striker to get 20 goals a season and thats the case of u have midfielders scoring 15 goals+ but we dont have that at all.

I agree the way we set up away from home has a huge impact on the lack of goals.  The 2 defensive midfielders with 1 striker is far too negative.  Its one thing to do this v Man Utd & Arsenal but to use these tactics v the likes of Bolton, Villa etc is something else.

The 1st game v Villa will really show the intent of the gaffer.  If we go there with a negative set up with the aim more of not to get beat it would suggest nothing has changed. I really hope Rafa releases the chains this year.  Far too often we play like a robot or machine which is programmed to do something and its not allowed to explore anything else.

I know u cant take much from pre-season but again watching Arsenal the other day showed the difference between us and them.  With or without Henry u still see the 1 and 2 touch passing. the triangles and intricate play.  Full backs bombing down the flanks. U know that that side will create chances home and away.
