About himself

“I have not paid much attention to how much Didier Drogba cost, what Chelsea want to pay for certain players is their affair. I will just concentrate on myself and Liverpool. I am aware it is a high sum Liverpool paid for me and that brings added pressure but I will try very hard to prove myself. I know I cannot afford to do badly, the pressure is on but I accept that. I will do my best. People expect a lot of me and there is a lot of expectation from the fans but I am prepared to cope with that. I am aware, though, that it is a high sum that Liverpool have paid for me, and that brings added pressure but I will try very hard to prove myself. I know that I cannot afford to do badly, the pressure is on but I accept that. I will do my best.”

STRIKERS
"I don't think many other clubs have four very good strikers. We have Cisse, Owen, Baros and Pongolle here and they'll all want to play this season. If you have a table with four legs and they are good legs then you don't need another leg. If we have a team with good players then we might not need others. We'll see In Cisse we have signed a very good player. He is very fast, he scores a lot of goals and he also makes chances for others. Cisse is strong and quick, he is a fine young player and I was more than happy to know he was going to sign. Following his arrival I think we have the best forward line in the Premiership. If we work with the defense and midfield then we can enjoy what the strikers can bring to our team. I think I have the best strike force in the Premiership. But it gives me a selection headache and I will only know who to pick after training. It is really the players' decision; it depends on how they do their job”

“The strikers will all want to play but I can say I will change things around and they will all get to play between 15 and 20 games a season and they will not play when they are not happy or are not having a good time. At Valencia I changed it around from match to match, maybe we will not be able to do that just as much but all must realize they are important to the team, and it is the team that is important. But it is not about winning one match or five matches; it is about working carefully from match to match towards the title. It may be that for a certain game I pick a partnership which I think is right for that match. If we get the three points at the end of it then it means we're three points nearer to our target at the end of the season. They will all know they have a part to play, so long as they train well during the week and work hard”

PLAYERS

“I have only spoken to three players about their futures. They were Babbel, Vignal and Diouf. Owen has returned happy and he is happy here. I expect we will be able to announce his signing very soon, hopefully before the season starts. But I see no problem. I do not know yet who will be my first choice, that is up to the players, not me. They are all similar and different. They are all fast, have good ability and are good in the box. I have plenty of options and hope to get the best from each of them. I don't know at the moment what will happen. Milan Baros is very happy and confident after Euro 2004 and I am glad he wants to stay with Liverpool.  I know it is going to be difficult to keep them all happy but I think that's a good problem for me to have. It's hard for a player to understand that a title comes at the end of a season and that before then we have to work hard to pick up points in as many games as we can. In the 38 games we will probably need to play well in about 30 of them”

SIGNINGS

“People are saying that we are not making signings – but I say we will sign the best. I have discussed the issues with our chief executive (Rick Parry) and we will spend our money wisely and carefully on the best. It is important not to spend a lot – but to spend it well. The big clubs have been busy in the transfer market and it will make for an exciting Premiership season. At this moment I don't know how many players I will sign. It's up to the squad we have at the moment. If they train well and show me good things then maybe I'll just sign one or two more players”

“People expect a lot of me and there is a lot of expectation from the fans. But I am prepared to cope with that. I am aware though that it is a high sum that Liverpool have paid for me, and that brings added pressure but I will try very hard to prove myself. I know that I cannot afford to do badly, the pressure is on but I accept that. I will do my best. I do not make targets for goals, I will try my hardest every time and play to the maximum and then I can look at myself in the mirror and know I have done that. Then I will be happy. It has been a long wait for me to join Liverpool, it has been talked of for over a year, maybe two. But in France we say that if it is a long time waiting for something it is sometimes much better when it does happen. I had to wait until this summer when my contract ended, but I have always looked forward to this. "I have had plenty of other propositions but I have not considered them because I gave my word and that is important to me. I am just happy to be here. When Gerard Houllier left I did have some food for thought because he was someone I thought a lot of. But I was determined to complete the move, and to show what I was worth. It is up to me to prove my value to the team with or without Gerard Houllier being here. I have not said who I would prefer to partner up front, it is down to the manager and he is a very honest guy and he will know who is on the best form and who will be the best to play at any one time. He will make the right decision."
