the only reason im disappointed is because this came against english oppo, but like fowler said its best for this to happen now rather than when the league starts

Law of averages....we'll win the next pen shootout! :p

I thought Sissoko had a good game, and looks to be coming back to form. Kewell and Pennant looked good in patches. We just need to take our chances and be more clinical in front of goal. Torres looks like he could prove a handful for defences once he really settles in.

Not impressed by Babel so far. Kuyt's touch is woeful as is his finishing. Same with Sissoko and his touch. Plus he's so hesitant in shooting. Don't hold much hope for this season at the moment but the games have been played on a :censored: pitch so it'll be nice to see us play on a decent surface for once. It's the Feyenoord match that we should hopefully see our best side out so far with Torres and Gerrard playing. I just want to see a full strength team instead of Alonso and Sissoko in midfield with a Crouch/Torres partnership. I feel this midfield limits us when going forward.

Are you kidding?  :)

No I'm getting really p1ssed off with how often Rafa does this. We should have won this tournament to boost out rep in the far east, instead rafa has blown it again by playing a weakened team. The owners are not going to be happy.

Are you a div or something?

Do you really think this tournament has anything to do with improving our reputation as a footballing side???

Of course it isn't you plant pot. We go to the far east as a money making exercise. The Chinese love English football, especially Man Utd and Liverpool. We go there to make money - that's all.

It was hardly a weakened team- bar Gerrard (and Jamie) that wasn't that much of a different team to we had last year!! Same team = same performance!!

Let's just hope our new players bed in quickly so we can change our form this year!

You can say "rather have this out of the way" till the cows come home but IMO i think it would have done wonders to have won it and for the psychological effect of not even beating pompy with the new boys on may play on the mind

Just hope Torres scores VERY soon before this whole "crouch season" kicks into his head!!1

Relax, there’s no need for such outrage, I cannot understand why you are getting angry over a pre-season friendly, granted losing to a club of Portsmouth’s stature is never easy to take. If this was a domestic cup match then I would understand the anger, but me being the ‘optimist’ I am, is pleased this has happened now in a pre-season friendly, instead of a competitive match.

As for your points, Liverpool’s reputation has probably grown further by being out in Hong Kong, the stadium was full of people wearing the club shirt and I assume a club of Liverpool’s stature heading to Asia would no doubt create news headlines.

I’d imagine Liverpool has lost money by not winning this tournament, money which could be generated in a larger amount through revenue sales in that particular part of Asia.

It was a disappointing result, but it’s not the end of the world and hopefully this game has highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of the team.

I’m now focused on the Rotterdam tournament.

The worry with Babel is he may not be ready.  This is a huge move for him and the large fee just increases the pressure.   Torres isnt a very good pen taker.  I have seen him miss quite a few.  Kuyt will always run all day but its the other things that really count and he needs to step it up.

come on guys, i am normally first to moan when we lose but again today we outplayed the oppo, the biggest worry was not scoring but then again we played most of the game with kuyt and babel upfront, one is a youngster bedding in and the other is kuyt so we were always going to struggle to score.

the bright points were pennant, kewell, alonso looked decent again, sami showed he can still do it and torres looked quality when he came on, added to the fact we had no gerrard and no mash, all in all its not the end of the world.

however if i was sure that kuyt would be ahead of torres, crouch, voronin or my nan (who is dead) in the pecking order then i would be worried

A decent run-out particularly from a fitness standpoint. Thought the team looked sharp in the first half, the passing was crisp, they pressed well and created some good chances. Kewell and Pennant (especially) looked dangerous and Momo proved that he MUST be the fittest player in english football. Does anyone cover as much ground as him? I thought Babel played quite well without seeing too much of the ball, he ran the channels, stayed high up the pitch, kept the ball and showed a few nice touches. Torres took a bit of time to get into it but showed a few flashes and linked up well with Kuyt. Although my initial feeling with him is that he will need to use his body and physical strength more because he appears a little blase and relaxed as the ball comes into feet. I was dissapointed to see Crouch stay on the bench all game :(

Why are there criticisms of Babel so soon? Babel is young and is still learning how the game is played and will still improve as a player, if you expected a finished article then you have been incredibly naïve.

Babel hasn’t impressed me either, however I accept that Liverpool’s style of play contrasts Ajax’s style and that adjusting from life in Holland to that of England will take time.

Babel is still finding his feet, both in terms of a change of scenery and with his own football ability. I expect little from Babel this season other than improvement within his game.
