As for Phil Neal, I'm aware of Shankly's scouting but you still presumed it was Bill Shankly who signed Phil Neal, I just wanted to let you know that it wasn't, I'm not trying to rub it in or nothing though.

Cheers Bob, I don't mind holding me hands up when I'm either wrong or a little too harsh. Big headed statement coming next though, I'm not rarely wrong, ask LFC2007.

And just like you included Giggs in the homegrown category, very rarely wrong, yeh right

I didn't presume Neal was signed by Shankly, it was a question about TALENT SPOTTING, Shankly had just as much influence in bringing in Neal than Paisley, Paisley completed the deal that's all - but you like to ignore the point because you're stuck in the 70's.

Correct me if I'm wrong oh might LFC2007 but did Giggs or did he not come through the United youth system? Also if somebody doesn't come from the city of the club is playing, does that mean Michael Owen wasn't a homegrown lad because he's from Chester not Liverpool?  ???

Also if I were stuck in the 70s I wouldn't be complaining about Liverpool Football Club. Neal was a Paisley signing which you have since acknowledged. Talent spotting is something Liverpool managers of old could do rather well. Nowadays talent spotting has declined from Liverpool. I'm happy to see the talented youngsters being brought in but I don't see much reason to because in 2 years when they're all hitting 20 the majoirity of our 1st side will be hitting their peak and these young lads from abroad won't get a look in so what's the point in bringing them over?
1) You'll Never Walk Alone
2) pass and move is the Liverpool groove
3) FIRST WILL ALWAYS BE FIRST AND SECOND WILL ALWAYS BE NOTHING.
4) If Torres has scored 60 league goals for Liverpool by the start of the 2011/12 season, I'll say he's better than Owen.

god_bless_john_houlding wrote:Ah talent spotting. Yes the great argument of Liverpool managers who can spot talent and those who can't. I recall Roy Evans finding a very good right-back in Vegard Heggem, I remember Houiller finding a very good right-back in Markus Babbel, both who were unproven in the Prem. I also recall Rafa bringing two unestablished Prem right-backs to Liverpool-Josemi and Kromkamp. Obviously his talent spotting isn't up there with the two managers who went before him. On the other hand because I won't lay all the blame on Rafa. He brought in the best keeper we've had since Brucie. So maybe he can spot some talent, but for me he isn't a great talent spotter.

That's it edit your posts why don't you, covering your tracks as you go.

Talent spotting, Ah, I remember Houllier finding that great player Diao, that great player from Senegal. One good world cup and he was in.
I also remember Rafa bringing in Sissoko, the player who ran the show against the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Barcelona and who was quoted as being worth £10m this summer.

I also remember that great player Traore, what a signing he was, talent spotting at its finest. He was so good Rafa even managed to get him playing in a UCL final.

You're right, Rafa's talent spotting isn't up there with the other two. It's on a different level, a higher level.

Not big headed at all, really.  :D

I didn't think it was either Bob, just another fair, unbiased and correct statement from me  :D

Errm, you do realize that "I'm not rarely wrong" is the equivalent of saying "I'm often wrong" don't you?  ???  :D

higher level--Paletta or Hyypia or Mark Wright? Bellamy or Litmanen or Riedle? Nunez or Murphy or Macca? Zenden or Kewell or Berger? Great level Rafa is on there.

Owen is English, Giggs is Welsh. Tell me Oh mighty GBJH do you need more information on the state of the union?

You haven't a clue about the academy system, that is fundamentally why you fail to acknowledge why we have not produced youngsters of generations past. If the talent is not there you cannot play it. You are stuck in the 70's with your all British attitude. Neal was a Paislesy signing, which I never disputed, the queston was about talent spotting but you missed the point entirely as usual. These young foreign lads are being brought in to supplement our youth system, the system has been failing and we have to look further afield for young talent. Your point about hitting 20 in two years time and not getting in the first team is ridiculous, if they are good enough they will get a chance. Finnan is getting on, we could do with a new right back to gradually come in, the same applies to the centre backs.

Why Paletta instead of Agger?

Why Bellamy instead of Torres?

Why Nunez (who was foisted on us, BTW) and not Pennant or Garcia or Babel?

Why, in short, compare these particular signings--particularly since Hyypia and Kewell were already here and thus, didn't need replacing?  ???

You compare isolated examples, without a fair comparison.

Let me do the same.

Diouf or Crouch?

Diao or Alonso?

Vignal or Aurelio?

Agger or Traore?

Garcia or Murphy?

Reina or Dudek?

Carson or Kirkland?

Biscan or Mascherano?

Pennant or Smicer?

Torres or Cisse?

Oh and Macca wasn't bought, he came through the youth system - again another inconsistency in your comparison.  :O

Yet again people failing to see a basic point. I'm aware Macca wasn't bought, but it's still about spotting talent. Also I compared the players I did, to make my argument more in favour of my point, as you did with yours. I'm not going to compare a Houiller bad signing with one of Rafa's better signings shall we say, when I'm saying Rafa doesn't spot talent. Just like you're not going to compare one of Rafa's signings like Pelligrino to Hyypia, because your point is Rafa is a genius.

My point isn't that Rafa is a genius, it's that he's made fewer poor signings than Houllier. That was the point. You just haven't a bloody clue because you're stuck in the 70's.

You're obsessed with this 70s lark because I happened to prove you wrong about Phil Neal. Fair enough if you want to be that pathetic. But might I add even with Houiller's more poor signings as you claim, within Houiller's first 3 years he performed better than Rafa. Little something for you to think about. And unless I'm mistaken both Houiller and Rafa have been managers of Liverpool after the 70s.

Who gives a fck about comparisons between Houllier and Rafa?? lets go further back and compare Rafa and Shanks first 3 years FFS. The dynamics of the league have changed massively since the start of Houlliers reign.

You proved nothing about Phil Neal, in fact I proved to you that it was Shankly's scout who spotted him, you on the other hand proved that you are a class act at missing the point.

Houllier achived more than Rafa in his first three years?  Stop it you're killing me!
