Rafa and spending - Poor journalism

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I get really pi$$ed off reading poor journalism like this:

/It can be argued that there is also real pressure on Benitez to deliver a first title to Anfield since 1990 now, because the Torres capture takes his spending to an eye-watering £121 million since he took over from Gerard Houllier three years ago.

Benitez passed his third anniversary as manager of the Reds in June, and his purchase of Torres takes his spending on five strikers alone to £55 million.

His earlier criticism of an apparent lack of funds at Anfield, or of an unwillingness to make them available, quickly, for the top transfer targets, has little substance now. By sanctioning the record-breakng swoop for Torres, Liverpool's owners have signalled their willingness to compete with the financial clout of Chelsea and Manchester United.

Indeed, his spending over three years in charge outstrips anything undertaken by Liverpool before in their history./

There is so many wrongs in this article and it makes me mad.
Sure, there is always pressure to win the title at liverpool but this garbage about Rafa spending sooo much is getting on my nerves.

First saying Rafa has spent 121 million the last 3 years is such a lie.
And not only that, insisting that Rafa bought Cissé is another lie.
Then there is the total spending. If Rafa spend 10 million each on 8 players and sell 8 players for 80 million he has not spent 80 million!
He has spent a total of £0 then.
Before this Torres deal he has been given around 10-15 million a season to spend these last 3 years.
If I check Houlliers net spend it would be interesting to see how much that would be.

Not only that Rafa's buys grows at liverpool and increases in value which means if Rafa sold Alonso, Reina, Momo etc we would make a great profit.

Houllier totally blew away his spendings decreasing the value of the players he bought and totally misjudging the talents of the players.

Just look at these players:

Djibril Cisse   14,000,000     sold: £5m?
Emile Heskey 11,000,000     sold £6.25
El Hadji Diouf 10,000,000     sold £3.5m
Dietmar Hamann 8,000,000  sold free
Chris Kirkland  6,000,000     sold £3.5m
Nick Barmby    6,000,000     sold £2.75m
Christian Ziege 5,500,000    sold £4m
Igor Biscan     5,500,000     sold free
Harry Kewell    5,000,000    sold free next year?
Jerzy Dudek    4,850,000     sold free
Salif Diao      4,700,000      sold free
John Arne Riise  4,000,000   sold still here
Sander Westerveld 4,000,000   sold 3.5m
Bruno Cheyrou   3,750,000     sold free
Vladimir Smicer  3,750,000     sold free

£2m on Morientes and £2m on Garcia is the only players Rafa has lost money on so far!

Look at this

Xabi Alonso  10,750,000     value £20m?
Dirk Kuyt      9,000,000      value £10m?
Peter Crouch 7,000,000      value £15m?
Jermaine Pennant 6,700,000  value £7m?
Craig Bellamy  6,000,000      value £8-9m?
Jose Reina      6,000,000     value £15m?
Luis Garcia     6,000,000      sold £4m
Dan Agger     5,800,000      value £7m?
Fernando Morientes  5,500,000    sold  £3.5m
Mohammed Sissoko   5,000,000    value £10m?
Alvaro Arbeloa January  2,600,000   value £2.5m?
Josemi     2,000,000              sold £2m
Gabriel Paletta   2,000,000      value £1-2m?
Mark Gonzalez   1,500,000      sold £2.5m?
Scott Carson    750,000         value £4m?

I'd say that's a fantastic record.
Before this summer Rafa has bought for around 75m and sold for 40m which means he has spent 35m in 3 years!
And still most of the players he has brought to this club are much improved and worth alot more.

GH bought players for 125 million and sold for 56 million and left us with a team with Diouf, Cissé, Diao, Cheyrou etc.

I don't agree at all just cause Rafa for the 1st time ever got money to spend on a player, he has to instantly succeed.
It only means we can finally play with the big boys.

1st time ever we spend 15m+ on any player and all of a sudden we must win the league.

Manure and Chelski spend 15m+ on players like there is no tomorrow ffs!

If he doesn't spend, because he doesn't spend. If he spends, because he spends. The point is to criticise Rafa and Liverpool.

Let them talk. A few weeks back they laughed because we had no budget. If the americans provide what Rafa asks, now they'll say we're buying the league.

How much differents clubs paid for their main 20 players (before this summer transfer window):

1. Chavsky £249.5m (average per player: £12.5)
2. Manure £141.4m (average per player: £7.1)
3. Arsenal £95.8m (average per player: £4.79)
4. LFC £86.5m (average per player: £4.3)

In regard,  Benítez, whose record signing (before Torres) remains Xabi Alonso at £10.5m, has yet to even spend within £2m of the Chelsea average.

Here, this is how many league points each 'big club' got this season for every million pounds spent on its 20 main players.

Liverpool.....................0.78
Spurs.............................0.75
Arsenal ........................0.71
Man United.................0.63
Newcastle....................0.56
Chelsea.........................0.33

Of course, the higher up the table you go the more you have to pay for just a few extra points.

Regarding the 4 main teams (Manu, Chavsky, Gunners), Benítez stands 4th in terms of squad cost, and 4th in terms of time spent at his club. That doesn't make getting to 1st an easy proposition.

The addition of Torres' £20m let us yet far behind ManUre and Chavsky. Without forgetting than ManUre seems to have already spent about £45-50m (Heargreaves 17m+Nani 14m+Anderson 16m) for the next season...

Well, it's typical it's from the lfc website.

Cause no regular journalists wants to write the real truth for a change.
Was a good article by Tomkins though.

Good post, and an interesting point. Serves good ammo for any c*nt that wants to slabber because we spend a few quid on a player that they wanted for themselves, like Manc and Chelsea supporters. Thing is, United are almost getting as greedy as Chelsea when it comes to spending on players without any real reputation. People can bang on all day long about how Torres is apparently not worth the money Rafa spent on him without even seeing him, but at least he already has a made legacy and is a scoring international player. The likes of Nani and Anderson transfere's for the Mancs are a little too self-indulgent if you ask me. Both players arn't even tested yet, and are young. Who pays that amount of cash for players under the promise of just potential? Yet, no one comes out in the press and slams them for it. All they did was rant and rave about these two players and how great they were. Let's see! I hope they both fail. It will show the signing of Torres as being the inspired signing that he is.

Not only that, Torres cost £20m which is only 3 million less than Manure spend on each of their 3 new signings.

And Torres has a far better resume than 2 teenage maybes and a defenisve midfielder.

Just pi$$es me of when journalists make Rafa look like some nutjob wasting money right and left.
Never seen a manager spending the cash like it was his own, always trying to think about both the present and the future.

And when everyone knows a top class striker cost 15m+ at least no matter how you look at it, Rafa is still blamed for being a failure at buying strikers.

How can that be when he has only been able to buy strikers for 6,7 and 9 million. That is middle table class money and still everyone demands Rafa should make wine out of water.

Highest transfer until Torres was Alonso at 10,75 million.
That is coffee money if you want to compete at the top!
So while everyone forgets that Manure and SLAX have spent
28m on Veron, 29 on Ferdinand, 27 on Rooney 13 on Ronaldo and Chelski and Maureen have spent 30 on Shevshenko, 25 on Drogba, 25 on Essien, 21 on SWP, 20 on Carvalho etc
Rafa is all off a sudden wasting money for spending £20m once.

the truth is the press don't like benitez because he is super dull....but hey he is now super interesting because he has grown a moustache.

since he has come to liverpool i have noticed liverpool is viewed as grey and dull and not worth talking about.

even the press conference for torres was treated low key on the radio and an unknown croation going to arsenal for £10 million was higher up the pecking order in the news bulletins.

before he came liverpool was one of the glamour club now the media has decided to rewrite our history.

the worrying thing is benitez is making a statement of spanish la liga is best, with the signings he keeps making.

those who think the prem is best will clearly want liverpool to fall flat on their faces.

liverpool winning the league will be seen as la liga beating up the premiership.

we could win 20 leagues under rafa and the press would still be underwhelmed. just like they are after we have reached 2 champions league final.

torres is overrated but his image should lift the gloomy grey appearance of liverpool....bring back the spice boys i say.

you can't laugh and chuckle at the way david guest look but turn a blind eye to his twin rafa, who thinks bringing in ugly players like crouch kronkamp, agger and others will mask and protect his ugly mug.

liverpool need an image lift.
we have never been as comercially attractive as manu or teams like madrid and barcelona....i wonder why.

What? That's one of the most ridiculous statements I've ever read. Since when does how a player looks equate to success on the pitch? That just smacks of gay innuendo, really. And then you mention the Mancs like they've a team of international playboys and runway models. Take a look at the Neville's, Rio, Monkey Boy, Crater face'd Ronaldo, and the likes of Rudd Horseman, Beaver-faced Scholes, and not to mention freaks like Luke Chadwick. I could go on and on! Bring back the Spice Boys?! F*ck off! If you fancied the team that much, and rather have no solidity and backbone to our football, not to mention a lack of trophies, I dare you to stand up in front of the Kop one afternoon next season and proclaim this! I dare say you won't be too popular!

Spot on.

And that's why Chelsea and Manchester are looking their hands full of money and wondering how come Torres has joined Liverpool rather than them.

They will try to delude themselves saying things like "it must be the Spanish clique" or "it must be Rafa". But the real reason is that Liverpool is respected more than Chelsea and Manchester together for their history, and the fact is that we have a project in hands that keeps the likes of Gerrard, Alonso, Carraguer and now Torres, excited. A project good enough so that Torres comes to Anfield after rejecting Juventus, Manchester, and Real Madrid in the past.

The sooner they accept the reality in the media and in London and Manchester, the better for them
