Luis Garcia Leaves Anfield - He Signs for Athletico Madrid

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I actually think Garcia was the one player we could call our wild card.you could always rely on him to do the unexpected, sure he could be very frustrating especially when we were losing or trying to get control of games and he would give the ball away, but he could also be the one player to change the game in an instant. Some of his goals have made sure liverpool have had some of the best seasons over the past years like goals againt juventus, chealsea that got us to the final of the europaen cup and also another stunning goal against chealsea at old trafford that got us to cardiff against W.H.What i never got, especially from some of our fans is the way they give garcia stick saying he was a liability and to lightweight giving the ball away far to much, but this came from the same fans who loved Danny Murphy who in my opinion give the ball away far more often than luis, and luis had more talent in his little toe than danny murphy ever would.Good Luck Luis you have been one of liverpools best buys over the past 5 years.

I rate Garcia a lot and I think there will be a fair few occasions when we miss his trickery (rather than his 'ball-wastery' :D ) next season.  The reality is, though, he's going to have a harder and harder time getting a game for us as we continue to add quality players to the squad.  I can only see him starting if we run into injury problems and the bench is going to get rather crowded too, with Carson, Hyppia and a 3rd striker virtually nailed on to be there for all league games.  That leaves two spots for a back-up CM and a back-up wide player, with Luis only being one of the options for the latter.  So, his main opportunities would probably be limited to cameo appearances in Europe barring injuries or significant drops in the form of others.

how old is garcia now anyway? 28? ???

well lets but arteta, to good to be at the blue sh!te

for me i hope if luis does go he has aword with crouchy and tells him his secret about coming on to the ball and heading

he will always be a marmite player (some hate him some love him)

panache, skill, cheek good work rate never above the team great professional i think pennant could learn alot from luis  .

but he could annoy the cr@p out of me with a two yard pass straight to the defender..................  :veryangry

every one has a price 8 mill is good business

Garcia is a player that most fans seems to love.
Sure he has some great games, especially at home and in the CL and scores his share of goals.

But what everyone just seems to forget is that garcia has so many abysmal games where he looses the ball over and over again and gets outmuscled and does nothing for a whole game.
And in those away games in the league he is practically useless except maybe one or 2 games a season.

But I know it always the good times you remember...

He's proved crucial in many games, not just one or two a year.

In the league he has also been very useful in helping to unlock defenses. He may be a little wasteful with his passing, but he definitely has ability that we've needed in the past.

I assure you that those of us who rate Garcia don't forget his weaknesses, we just value his contributions to the team so much more highly than his detractors do.  Let's have a look at a few highlights of his time at Liverpool (to date).  For fun, I've not even listed any of his significant contributions in the Champions League, which most people acknowledge.  Rather, I've focused on his goal-scoring contributions to the team in the league and domestic cups in order to unsettle this widespread notion that he doesn't offer anything in the English game:

1) 2006/2007

In a season blighted by injury (hurt in early January), Garcia still managed to score 3 goals in the league.  To put that in perspective, Gerrard played twice as many games as Garcia and managed 7 goals in the league.  The highlight was Garcia's game-winning away goal at Spurs on Dec. 30th.

2) 2005/2006

This campaign, Garcia managed 8 league/domestic cup goals, all from open play once again.  Of those, 5 came on the road (is he really so rubbish away from Anfield? ??? ) and of those, 2 were match winners (Sunderland, Chelsea in the FA Cup Semi) while a third was a vital equalizer which earned as a draw at Bolton.  He also managed to score the winning goal at Anfield on derby day as well as the winner at Anfield over Arsenal (as a late substitute).

3) 2004/2005

Another 8 goals in the league/domestic cups in Garcia's first season, including 3 away goals.  In the midst of scoring key CL goals against Leverkusen, Juventus and Chelsea, he scored the winner at Portsmouth in April as well as notching the winner against Everton at Anfield a month earlier.

My point is that those of us who rate Garcia are not just simpletons who refuse to acknowledge his shortcomings.  For me, those shortcomings have been outweighed by his moments of brilliance--most especially his knack for scoring key goals, home and away, in domestic competitions and Europe.  He will be missed if he goes.  :nod

I think everyone agrees that Garcia has been valuable to Liverpool since his arrival, IMO he has to move on now. I don't think his constant lack of simple skills will help him win any more fans over. His first season almost every red fan was convinced because of the goals, 2nd season we seen his ability to play very good FOR the opposition side and last year he was largely disappointing when he did play. Thanks Luis but now it's time to go mate.

4) If Torres has scored 60 league goals for Liverpool by the start of the 2011/12 season, I'll say he's better than Owen.

I've had many an arguement about Garcia who, for me, is absolutely priceless as a player who has won us far more many games than his ability to lose possession (which, for the record, occurred most in his first season - he sorted it out after that) has lost us.

Thank Christ for common sense - I, like Bad Bob, will be very sad to see Luis go, if that does occur. I have actually heard that his departure is much more down to his homesickness than is being let on, which is something I can excuse. I also think people are playing down Garcia's ability to make the first team - currently, give me him ahead of Pennant as he causes more problems for defences, pure and simple.

You stated earlier in this thread that he is worth keeping for cup competitions, now we should get rid? Which one is it?

Eh...? His second season was one of the best for Garcia as he merged his goalscoring ability with also being able to retain possession; the latter being something he learned to do after his first season's shortcomings. And last year he was largely dissapointing? Sorry mate, but you're generalising on an opinion of a player that has come about from those that don't care to watch or understand what Garcia brings to a team. Oh, and he was injured for majority of it as well.

Not having a go mate, but i'd ask that if you do make posts about a player, don't contradict an earlier post that you made. It makes you look uneducated, in the footballing sense only.  :)

Sorry I suppose I was contradicting myself but my views on Garcia are simple. There has got to be someone out there who can score the goals he does yet do more for the team as a whole. So although I said we should keep him for cup competitions I think my mind has changed and we should let him go especially if we can get some money for him. And yes I know he was injured for the majority of the season which is why I put when he played he was largely disappointing.

i'll be sad to see him go, as he's a handy player to throw on with 25 mins to shake things up. In Europe, he's fantastic and his goal against Juventus was superb.

It seems the deal with Atletico for Luis is done:

Spanish article

It says that's certain that the deal is now done and that Luis will be in Madrid next week. He'll join for a fee around £3.5m (€5m).

This deal is totally independant from Torres'.
