Just want to clarify that I think 12 league goals would be a very good start for Torres in his 1st season if he signs. I'm sure many will disagree with me, but I dont think we should be looking at the transfer figure so much when evaluating his season IF he does ok.

I dont think this deal will make or brake Rafa. And I just cant see us doing as bad as last year in the league. I would not be surprised to see the 14 million transfer record broken another 3 times around this time next year. Which to me means more class and less pressure on the players coming in for these prices.

An important point by mungi by saying that more will follow Torres if he signs. I dont think Rafa will buy all superstars and houshold football names but Im sure in the future he will be going for one or two, and this transfer lets the world know we can get these players.

He continues his Spanish form he'll score about 15 league goals which isn't that fantastic for a centre forward (Ronaldo scored about that much from the wing).

FFS, just pay 9m for a proven premiership goalscorer like Michael Owen who is only 27.

Morientes, Cisse etc were big signings of foreign strikers who were cr*p. Don't take a 27m pound risk.

Crouch & Kuyt aren't up to it either.

Benitez has failed to buy any striker good enough to follow Rush, Aldridge, Fowler and Owen.

A bit of a task, though, that.

Don't forget that either one of those strikers in their prime would be worth over £30m on today's market.

The only reason Owen is so cheap is because of the daft Toon putting such a ridiculous release-clause in his contract, and the fact you'd be lucky to get 10 games a season out of him nowadays.

thank you !

still think michael owen is the perfect forward for liverpool ! if we can get him for 9mill we should be in talks with newcastle already ! rafa rating him or nt is something else and quite frankly... if rafa is the one saying we dont need/want owen...hes a moron !

I know this is a Torres post but replying to your Owen discussion.  Owen had the chance to join us from Real Madrid but he chose the option of going to Newcastle for more money.

You need to stop thinking of Owen in his hay day knocking goals in for fun because he isn't that player now.  He is to injury prone and we need to move on.

I think Torres will be a good buy and will be looking forward to watching play in a red shirt.

i dont no were u get owen cant score no more. last seasson when he played he scored and the season b4 he had the best goal per minute ratio in out of all real strikers and maby la liga, there is no one in the world id rather have 12 yards out from goal than owen,

he dint choose newcastle liverpool dint have the money to buy him and too be honest if i had the choice rot on the bench in madrid or play at newcastle i no which one id prefer,

he openly said that newcastle was his second choice and i think if he did come back he would bang the goals in, and if he dint you could still sell him to the likes of wigan and so on for not much loss

how do you know he isnt the player he was ?

did he look like a poor player when he played coming back from injury ?

injury prone is not good enough  reason not to buy a top class payer f you ask me... he had a couple of bad injuries but who is to say he wont play 30sum games next season ?

lets put it this way.... SUPPOSE you know for a fact he is leaving newcastle... wuld you rather Liverpool, Manutd, Arsenal or Chelsea get him ?

would be a brilliant signing and if we can get him and torres would be a major improvement to our squad !

IMO I just don't think Owen will ever play a full season for any team again because he is injury prone.

I never said he couldn't score no more I said he is not the player he was.

Again this is my opinion I would rather see us sign Torres and see how he copes with our league, rather than Owen come back.

If you remember Madrid wanted rid of Owen so if he pushed his hand he could of come to us on the cheap, because when we sold baros to Villa we had other teams offering more but Baros wouldn't sign for them.

Its a torres thread but i just have to say :

I think its a very simplistic view that michael owen chose newcastle ahead of liverpool because it was world cup year.........

I do not claim to know what happened and neither does anyone else.....My view is - Newcastle offered the big money....Real accepted it.....this obviously wasnt Owen's first choice...... Liverpool's interest wasnt strong enough...... Owen was living in a foreign country.....May have been homesick - prob was....my personal experience is Spain can be a lonely place if you dont have spanish ( i lived there for a yr )  went to newcastle.....loved being home in england , countryside , everything the way he was use to ....... still he wanted liverpool fc to firm up their interest ( his dream after realising his mistake - because we all make mistakes) sweated on it but it just didnt look like it was going to materialise----- so he install a clause for 9 mill - leaving the door open  for a return just like robbie some day...... he just didnt want to go back to madrid -  i dont blame him.....some people just dont like living abroad( me included)
I am a romantic....I would love him back because along with carra he is my favourite ...iv him on 3 of my jerseries.......he is our player.... i was gutted when he left us but still think he is an amazing player ......so what if he loves playing for his country....... is there anything wrong with that??? I dont buy into the hype that he cares only for the national team......

torres and owen.....magic....: epl on its way

i would rather take the gamble on owen then i would on torres, we could stand to lose alot of money and one of our best play makers one of only a handfull of players at the club that can come of the bench and change things garcia,

With all players that teams pay millions for you are taking a risk because you will never know how they will play until they are in your team.  the same being if Torres signs we will never know what he is like until we see him play in the famous red top.

Shevchenko being the prime example at Chelsea
