Only reason I can think of is we haven't enough money to buy Torres outright and still get the other essential players we need, without first either selling some players (Cisse, Bellamy etc) or p/x them.

A few sources are saying that Benitez won't use Crouch in the deal but is trying to use Cisse.

from sky sports

Liverpool are looking to use Djibril Cisse to strike a deal with Atletico Madrid for Fernando Torres, according to sources in Spain.

The French striker spent last season on loan at Marseille and they are keen for him to return to the Stade Velodrome.

However, Liverpool have ruled out any prospect of a new loan - which could hamper Marseille's efforts.

Bolton, who could struggle to hold on to Nicolas Anelka this summer, have also been linked - but Liverpool could have other ideas as they look to bolster their own forward line.

Reports in Spain suggest Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has made contact over Torres and he is ready to offer Cisse and other players to try and land Atletico's captain.

Arsenal and Manchester United are also being tipped to mount bids for the Spanish international, but Liverpool appear to be heading the race at present.

Torres has never shirked in his commitment to the Atletico cause, but the Rojiblancos may be ready to do a deal for the 23-year-old.

The chance to sign Cisse could be tempting for Atletico, who it is claimed have also been offered the chance to sign Luis Garcia - who is on his way back from a serious knee injury.

English reports suggested Peter Crouch could be offered for Torres, but Benitez has already insisted that the England striker is in his long-term plans - unlike Cisse.

Atletico Madrid have reportedly told Liverpool they will only do business over Fernando Torres if Peter Crouch comes as part of the deal.

The Daily Star claims the two clubs are £8million apart in their valuation for Spain international Torres, and while the Reds are believed to have offered Luis Garcia in part-exchange Atletico would favour the arrival of Crouch.

Officials from Anfield are apparently set to travel to Madrid this week in the hope of completing a deal for the highly-rated 23-year-old, who has also been linked with Manchester United.

Atletico coach Javier Aguirre is said to be a big fan of England star Crouch and believes the 6ft 7in frontman would be a big hit in La Liga.

However, Liverpool chief Rafa Benitez wants a pool of four top-class strikers as he bids to challenge on all fronts next season, and would prefer to lose Garcia over Crouch.

If we really are £8 mil apart in valuation then a deal looks a long way off

latest on the situation

Djibril Cisse's agents are reportedly in talks with Atletico Madrid about the Frenchman being a makeweight in the Fernando Torres deal.

Spanish newspaper AS claims that Rafa Benitez has instructed Cisse to open negotiations with Atletico as they refuse to accept an offer of £16m plus Luis Garcia for Torres.

Liverpool will not pay the £27m fee for Torres and are desperate to make a deal that will see a squad player moving in the opposite direction.

Atletico are apparently already making plans for life after Torres, offering around £13m plus Mista for Villarreal striker Diego Forlan.

But Villarreal representative Jose Manuel Llaneza says any club that wants to buy Forlan away will have to meet the asking price.

"Villarreal does not want to bother negotiating for Forlan," said Llaneza in Marca. "His value is 23 million euros (£17m)."

Forlan was apparently considered by Rafa Benitez, but the Uruguayan is a little overpriced for the Spaniard's liking.

am i being totally fking stoopid here ? surely if the PLAYER wants to leave a club and play for another team then you can shove ya 'release clause'?

Torres: "I want to leave Athletico and play for another team in Europe. I like Liverpool."
Athletico boss: "your not moving because they haven't paid the release clause".
Torres: "But they're willing to pay, just not £27m"
Athletico boss: "well it aint enough so your not leaving".
Torres: "Fine, you can pay my wages for a year but I aint kicking another football for your stinking team, so swivel!" :D

What would the point of contracts be then?  Torres aint looking to screw his boyhood team.  He loves A.Madrid.

Surely when a player is under contract its up to a buyer to meet the valuation of the seller or a mutual agreement is agreed on.  The player under contract to the club shouldnt decide on his valuation.

Depends what value they put on Crouch in the deal. If they get 12 million for Crouch, 8 for Cisse and throw Garcia in for free ( :p ) then I´d go for it, get Torress and buy Anelka to replace Crouchie.

At you´ve still got money to put against another buy such as Tevez etc..

If they are only willing to accept Crouch i say no deal. Crouch is worth a good few goals each season and i just get this morientes feeling deep down in my guts.

No way for Crouch's exit.

He's what consistency to be meant. :)

His bicycle kick(s) are far more better than anyone else. 200cm++ beanpole. Need not imagine. We'd got it inside our team
