Progress is being made - Rafa: there is no urgency yet

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

From .tv

Rafael Benitez has told supporters not to panic about the club's lack of transfer activity so far this summer.
With the first batch of players due back at Melwood for the start of pre-season training on Thursday, press speculation is rife as to which 'big names' are on the Liverpool manager's shortlist.

But although he's keen to strengthen the squad as soon as possible, Benitez remains calm and insists progress is being made behind the scenes to bring new faces in.

"We have a number of targets, and I am receiving interesting phone calls all the time," he said.

"We are monitoring situations all the time and there is no urgency yet. If we bring in players from Spain, they only finished playing a week ago so they will need a longer break, but I would like somebody in before we start pre-season training."

--------------------------------------------------------------

Good to see Rafa confirming there is progress being made in the transfer market. Also that there is good signs of interesting targets being mentioned, and that one signing is wanted before Thursday, which is exciting :D I wonder who it could be   :oh:

Another point is that he mentions he wants players in before pre-season training which i think is essential to get the team ready as a group instead of individually, which is key in making a successful squad. I don't want another season like last season when the new signings took quite a considerable and costly amount of time to settle into the squad, we need to be off and running from the start if we want to contend for the premiership this season

Yeah he'll be the name i'll be betting on to be the signing before thursday.

I don't want to spark another argument on the Torres situation but i think that even though he doesn't seem to be the best option i still think he has the most potential and i feel signing for us will perhaps unleash this talent he is apparent to have to a high or even world class level. However we all know what happened with the likes of Cissé and Baros, potential is not the key factor its if you use it.

The more pleasing aspect of these comments from Rafa is that it'll hopefully put an end to the 'Rafa frustrated and quitting' bollox that crops up on here and other forums every couple of days. He's made it clear that like all of us he'd like to get these things sorted quickly but that just isn't always possible. However things are looking like they'll start moving soon and he seems to be happy with that.

The signing he hopes to make before Thursday could be either Torres or Benayoun I think as they are the two that there seems to be the most activity around. As an outside bet I would guess that Macini is a possibility although Roma do seem intent on trying to keep hold of him.

Im glad Benitez has made these comments, i was beginning to get a bit worried to be honest.  With all the :censored: being spouted about rifts etc, i thought he may have come out and commented sooner.  Seems a little weird though that straight after the cup final he was having a rant saying we need to act quickly in the transfer market. Now it seems we need to be patient, i dont know aye. Just gotta hope that things are going well behind the scenes and some of the targets are now becoming more realistic.

I assume that the possible signing before thursday will be Benayoun, seems pretty much a done deal.

I think the post champions league final comments were down to nothing more than frustration at having lost a final that we could so easily have won. Many of us probably kicked the nearest cat (or spouse  :D ) but Rafa I think just lost his cool for a couple of moments and said what he did.
In all reality it was very unlikely that any players of quality would be available in the immediate aftermath of Athens because some leagues were still in progress and internationals were scheduled. Yes the mancs made their move early but in truth the Hargreaves deal had been on the go for the best part of 12 months and the two youngsters are a bit of a risk at the prices they've paid. They're very much in the form of could be great deals or could be in the diouff/diao class of fuck-ups (fingers crossed  :D ).
The next week or two I think will see the transfer market come to life as teams start to build towards the pre-season return as most will be starting to return from holidays (spain being the exception).

Rafas a clever man. When hes saying something to the press and us it probabaly means hes already passed that step what hes telling you about a week or 2 ago.

Im hopeful we will have some new signings by the end of the week.

If the Spanish just finished their league isn't that too soon to be bringing in Torres?
