Maybe if we were challenging for the title rather than just trying to finish in the top four would inspire him to turn it on against some of the lesser lights like Derby. As I have said my only doubts about Owen are fitness and if he is still good enough. A fit Owen, and I don't think you would need to worry about his attitude. £9million ! I would snatch their hand off if he could pass the medical.

As i've mentioned in other threads - much rather have a hungry and willing Tevez at £25mil (although, I agree with Torres - don't see him as a 20 a year man, nor someone that can do that much for the team for that much money - but for another argument, do we need a 20 a year - we've got Kuyt?). Owen's let us down, not once, but twice. Not a player (man?) to rely upon.

BTW, if we are playing for top four, or top of league, I don't give a sh!t - give it your all, no matter what. Tevez showed that last season, which is why i'd want him.

Kuyt scored 4 goals in his last 17 games last season, unless he starts playing further forward hes going to make that record look GOOD! I actually think Kuyt is a lot better than that but he's not going to score many if he keeps playing so deep.

CORRECT!!!!!

The reason I see we've not seen the best of him is because he's not playing in the position he should, which to a large degree I think Rafa is looking at Torres (who Tevez would do a better of job anyway) to play just behind to give Kuyt a more prominant role up front - where he can secure more goals.

We should be thanking Owen for his many many goals and there were so feckin important ones (FA cup Final?!) he was a huge part in our 2001 success our only real success for 10 years, get off of the lads back he did brilliantly for us, and muppets like you seem to be taking it away from him because of something we know hardly anything about.

Owen put us in a position where we had no choice but to sell him, either that or his contract would have run out. Rafa at the time was very blunt about it, you sign or you leave, we had no option. As a club you have to protect yourself - a contract is that protection. Owen can say all he likes about he wouldn't have left on a Bosman the next season, as a club you deal in business not on the word of a player, until you have the agreement down in writing it means feck all.

I'm taking nothing away from what he achieved and don't give me that "muppet" talk, you don't seem to be aware of what actually went on. A new manager comes in who has no experience in England whatsoever, who needs the assurances of key players to ensure there is stability at the club. Owen did not give him any assurances, he procrasitinated on his decision, then fecked off at a snip of what we potentially could have got for him in seasons past or if he'd signed a new contract.

I know he said he wanted to further his career when he left.

I know his England career was one of the main reasons he joined Newcastle instead of persisting at Madrid.

I know for sure that Newcastle are a significantly smaller club than both Liverpool and Real Madrid and that going there in no way fulfills the ambitions he set out to achieve when he left for Madrid.

I know that Real Madrid had three top class strikers prior to his arrival.

I know that any Real Madrid player has no chance of being "guranteed" football.

Stop this all hail Owen talk, he fecked us over and showed little integrity when he left - to Rafa and to the club at a time when our squad was depleted and there was massive change at the club.

He could have stayed at Madrid, who's to say he wouldn't have started more games the next season with all the managerial change? If I had the choice of staying at Madrid and fighting for my place or going to Newcastle and being almost certain of playing I'd take on the challenge of staying at the bigger club. If that's what he set out to do why did he give up after one season? He wasn't forced out, by all accounts Owen had a more than amicable relationship with Real Madrid and he could have stayed and fought for his place.

You clearly miss the point, I'm not excusing his achievements, but he left us up sh!t creek, he could at least have signed a new contract or made the decision faster so Rafa had options. I'm just thankful that Rafa and the lads managed to pull a UCL victory out the bag otherwise we may have missed out on UCL football for the following season.

He could have signed a new contract and decided to leave in any of the following transfer windows, who's to say that opportunity wouldn't have come around again?

Henry had a chance to leave last year, but he took it this year.

Madrid had just bought 2 new strikers (Hardly a sign of their faith in him ) Sven had repeatedly told him that unless he was playing regularly it would be difficult to pick him.

If Liverpool had wanted to, they could have kept Owen in the hope that a successful season would have encouraged him to re-sign. At worst they would have lost £8million, they lost £4million on Morientes anyway. Maybe if Rafa was more affable manager and had made the right noises Owen might have stopped. Who knows ? Gerrard got the impression he wasn't wanted as well, so maybe there was a communication problem, or maybe Owen just wanted to try his luck elsewhere.

Madrid in my opinion where just doing what they did with McManaman, get a player for next to nothing (Mcmanamans case nothing) and then sell them 12 months later for a fat profit. (They offered McManaman back to liverpool after 12 months) So if Owen had signed a new contract, Madrid would probably not have been interested in him anyway.

He made no secret of the fact he wanted to come back to Liverpool and that signing for Newcastle was a clear second choice.

What did Owen owe Rafa - nothing, so why should he make things easier by staying?

It was Parry and Houllier who let Owen's contract run down after saying they would never let it happen again. So who's fault was it? If Owen had wanted he could have said he was going to see out his contract and left for nothing in 12 months.
