To be honest I wouldn't mind Defoe. He has pace, can dribble, is a good finsher and score outside the box. The only thing he cant do really is header but we have got Kuyt and Crouch for that. Hes got a very good scoring record for spurs and we could probably get him at a good price. I reckon he is very much capable of getting 20 league goals a season for us especially with improved service.

Defoe? not good enough sorry! Its because when midtable teams play against us, they play narrow and compact, defoe can't handle that, we need a quality striker.

Torres, i agree with sabre and anyone who says he is overrated, he is! but if he really does join us, then hopefully he can prove us wrong and matures into a quality player

There is much more to defends game than running in behind the defence. Realistically the likes of Eto'o, villa and is looking like Tevez are out of the question. With that in mind we would be better off then getting a striker proven in this league and Defoe would be a very good option. He would get us a lot of goals, have no doubt about that.

Torres is Reds' number one target

Jun 20 2007

EXCLUSIVE by David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

ATLETICO MADRID skipper Fernando Torres has become Liverpool’s top target.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez has made the 23-year-old striker his number one priority after learning that the Madrid club have finally agreed to part with their prize asset.

But with Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal all having been linked with the international striker in the past, the Reds are keen to tie up a deal quickly.

Capturing a player of Torres’ stature would appease both Benitez and Reds’ fans who are becoming impatient at the lack of activity in the transfer market since Benitez’s bleak Athens post-mortem.

Torres could cost between £24m and £27m, the release figure believed to be in the player’s contract.

Atletico Madrid have steadfastly refused to sell Torres since he burst onto the scene as one of the most exciting 17-year-old’s in European football.

But a failure to qualify for next season’s UEFA Cup appears to have forced their hand.

Torres has scored 82 goals in 212 league appearances for Atletico, with 14 goals in 42 international appearances.

The Spanish striker was pictured in May, bizarrely appearing to show he already wears Liverpool’s heart on his sleeve.

During an Atletico match against Real Sociedad, Torres’ skipper’s armband came loose, revealing the Kop’s famous ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ slogan on the reverse.

While Torres could be an eagerly awaited new arrival, Marseille and Liverpool are close to agreeing a new loan deal for Djibril Cisse, according to French newspaper L'Equipe.

The French international spent last season at the Stade Velodrome and is happy to remain for a further season after Marseille qualified for the Champions League.

Bolton and Benfica have also been linked with a bid for Cisse, but it appears Marseille are set to reach an agreement with the Reds.

The deal is likely to include the option for Marseille to sign the 25-year-old front man for a pre-determined fee next summer.

Liverpool’s home match against Tottenham, originally scheduled for Saturday October 6, has now been put back to Sunday October 7 because of Spurs’ UEFA Cup involvement.

Meanwhile, internet reports suggesting Liverpool have submitted plans of the new Anfield to Liverpool City Council are inaccurate.

The Reds will unveil their plans to the public at the same time as they submit them, which is likely to be early July.

Fernando Torres could be the player to end Liverpool's summer of inactivity after Atletico Madrid finally decided to sell.

The Spanish striker will cost around £25m because of a clause in his contract but The Liverpool Echo believes that price will not put off Rafa Benitez.

Torres has previously been a target for Manchester United and Chelsea, but he is thought to favour a move to Liverpool - during a recent match his captain's armband allegedly slipped to reveal the words 'You'll never walk alone' printed on the reverse.

Atletico have finally agreed to sell Torres after failing to reach the UEFA Cup following a disappointing season in which their star striker still managed to score 14 goals.

One internet report suggests that Liverpool have despatched officials to Madrid in order to open talks with Atletico Madrid, who might be tempted by an offer of former player Luis Garcia in part exchange.

forlan is easily better in my opinion
but don't slag me off now, i'm just saying my opinion
but torres is over rated and forlan is under rated
forlans main problem was that he hardly ever got two games in a row
then again hmm he doesn't do well with squad rotation...maybe we should leave him alone

Is he that bad sabre?
If he's better than our current strikers than why not? of course subject to the fees as well......But looks like he got pace which is the 1st requirement to play in england. Maybe he can make it...cant be as bad as Morientes can he?  ???

RAFA CLOSING IN ON £24M TORRES
By David Maddock 21/06/2007

LIVERPOOL are poised to sign Spanish super striker Fernando Torres in a sensational £24million deal that will help make the peace with boss Rafa Benitez.

The new American owners of Anfield have made the Atletico Madrid hitman a priority in an attempt to show their manager they mean business and hope to seal the deal by the end of the week.

Benitez has become increasingly frustrated with the lack of action and apparent lack of cash from the money men this summer, and the fans have also started voicing their concerns.

AdvertisementIdeally, the Anfield bosses would like to spend no more than £20m on the Spain star, but owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett realise they may have to pay the £24m release fee in Torres' contract if they are to conclude negotiations swiftly.

Atletico are reluctant to let their skipper, a Reds fan, go. But failure to qualify for next season's UEFA Cup appears to have forced their hand and they have finally accepted they will not be able to hold on to their prize asset any longer.

this deal looks like its going to happen,  tbh  i think its taken all of us by suprise...   :)
