As far as I'm aware it's the tabloids who have built people's hopes up. I haven't seen a statement from the club saying "we plan to sign Villa, Eto'o, Henry and Tevez".

Not good enough for Liverpool and wouldn't add the quality needed in our attack.

This thread should have been closed after this post. The guy is a one season wonder and harldey top 4 material. Id rather keep Bellamy than have Bent,

I really don't want him at this club, he has limited ability and doesn't even compare to other possible targets

United chief executive David Gill has revealed Sir Alex Ferguson will have yet more funds to spend this summer on a striker.

Raids for Owen Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson looked to have put an end to the Red Devils' spending before the dust had settled on the previous season.

But Gill told the Daily Express: "We've looked at it and if something comes along in another area, which is a striker, we'll see what happens.

"If anything does happen it will be in the striking department."

The news will have Tottenham and Bolton preparing themselves for bids from the champions for Dimitar Berbatov and Nicolas Anelka.

Spurs have insisted Berbatov, so impressive in his debut Premiership season, is not for sale at any price, but the player himself added fuel to the rumours by revealing his admiration for Sir Alex Ferguson's side and saying he would relish the chance to play for them.

But he has also stressed a desire to win trophies at White Hart Lane.

United may have to look outside the Premiership to find a strike partner for Wayne Rooney, with Barcelona men Samuel Eto'o and Javier Saviola, young Ajax star Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Atletico Madrid's Fernando Torres have all possible targets.

Not really Liverpool related as such, but it just goes to show you ( if reports regarding Bent and Forlan are to believed )that we are going to be miles behind them come the start of the season !

Look at the names mentioned and the players already signed, and we are allegedly looking at Bent and Forlan.

Its just not good enough,no wonder people are laughing at us ???

This is the most important part of your post.

Laughing at us because the papers and the news have been full of the story about how the new owners are going to back Rafa and the estimated figures he will be given and so far of all the players we have been linked to Forlan and Bent have become the latest, long way off the names previous linked and neither IMO are what we either need or should be looking at. Didnt the new owners say that Rafa tells them the players he feels he needs and they back him? Thats why i dont really think that he went to them and said i think we need Bent or Forlan, and there has been no official statement to back that up thank f.uck

Its more down to frustration on my part that we dont seem to be doing any real business and IF we miss out on Malouda due to the fact we wouldnt pay that bit more it makes it all the more annoying.

It just seems IMO that we have gone from being promised the money to buy the best to having a little of it to buy second rate players ( if reports are to be believed ). Im still going to wait and see what happens and who comes in but at the moment this is the way i feel.

No doubt the next new rumour will be 'Rafa leaves due to broken promises' its just really starting to p.iss me off, Chelsea havent really set the transfer market on fire yet and maybe they wont but IMO they have a better team than us anyway despite our numerous cup success against them and dont need as many players to improve them. Arsenal have been quiet to, but all eyes are on us with all the stuff in the tabloids about the funds that Rafa will have

As far as I'm concerned we are 9 days into a three month transfer window, La Liga ( league hotly tipped for transfer actvity) hasn't finished yet. You are basing your pessimism on a few completely unverified press reports. Carra. Gerrard, Reina and Alonso have all signed new deals, we've signed Leiva and two starlets, Hicks has said we are actively seeking to sign people and said there will be news pretty soon. As far as I'm concerned, the press can come out with all the sh!te they like about x player. How many players have we been linked with - tens and tens of players.

The pessimism is unwarranted IMO, just because a few press reports linking us to Bent and Forlan have come out all of a sudden Rafa's not being backed.

Let them laugh, you responding in the most negative and pessimistic way possible plays into their hands and is unfounded.

The papers print a lot of sh!t and have linked us with so many players, don't pay too much attention to it.

The facts should determine your feelings about where we are going, not what the press have to say.

Pessimistic why because im p.issed off ,because i care about the club i support, i am slightly concerned, hardly negative or pessimistic. And waiting for the spanish league to end is optimistic ?, what then ,what if it ends and we still havent signed  any more players, do we say 'Its fine we are waiting for (insert any other league) to finish ?

Pessimistic would be to say that we should get of rid the new owners or they are the wrong choice, neither of which i said

I dont base my feelings on the fact that people are laughing, they are based like i said on the fact that i am becoming frustrated.I would rather come out now and voice 'MY OPINION' and then if im wrong to be frustrated ill be big enough to come out and say it ,instead of sitting back all smug so i can say 'i was never worried' in Rafa we trust blah, blah, blah

I,m made up that the players you mentioned have signed new contracts, but i am not going to be 'optimistic' with just that, dont forget that although the same players were part of a team that got to a  CL final we should have won they are also the same ones who were part of a team that fell a long way short of the 'Top two' in the league, so basically they plus the others were not enough then and until we bring in some top class players to replace some of the others they still wont be enough next season

When you are basing your pessimism on a few unfounded press reports then yes, I consider that Pessimism unwarranted. A few press reports suggesting we may be interested in Bent or Forlan is enough for you to jump to conclusions that Rafa isn't being backed?!!?

La Liga is a league we are hotly tipped to sign players from. Only when it finishes are we likely to announce anything, for example, if we want to sign Alves it is likely that Sevilla will want to conduct their business (or announce a deal) after the title race has been decided so they have NO destractions - that is only logical thinking.

We are 9 days into a 90 day transfer window, we've signed Leiva and Hicks has said there is business that is ongoing. This combined with getting the existing players signed on for longer takes time and it also takes a lot of time for lawyers to faff around with paperwork.

I'm not being "smug", I'm being reasonable and showing a REASONABLE amount of trust in the new owners and Rafa to bring in the players we need. You can't blame the lack of initiative in previous transfer windows on Hicks and Gillett - they were not part of the previous regime.

The bottom line is you are basing a load of unfounded negative chat on paper speculation that we are allegedly interested in certain players, how many players have we been linked with in the past and nothing has ever happened?

Plenty!
