What if the likes of bent and benayoun - Are the limit of our expectations?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I think he would do well for us to, IMO Chelsea ruined him as a player and we all know they bought him to stop us or others buying him. Before ANYONE starts im not saying we are linked with him, i was just asking peoples opinions if the story about him being available is true.

Love listening to his old fella on Talksport, he cracks me up

No team is full of star players (except for madrid a couple of years ago and look where that got them), i personally wouldn't mind yossi and bent at the right price , but like most have said they would improve the overall quality of the squad but not the first eleven.

If hypothetically speaking this was the level of players we only bought ,then it would be a struggle to compete for the league.
Having said that ,with players coming back from injury are squad should be stronger anyway (in theory).

What we have been lacking all season is consistency away from home and a killer instnct. We can't and have not killed teams off when we should have.

This is where we are lacking in true quality in certain positions, and that will carry on if we sign the types of players bigmick was suggesting (hypothetically).

We need quality in the right areas, we have it in midfield and defense imo , but it's on the wings and in attack where we don't have the killer touch, be it a pass, cross or goal. They are the priorities that rafa must redress. Consistency and quality in the final 3rd will bring us a major title challenge next season.

The thing is it's pretty obvious to us what we need , so it's pretty much nailed on that rafa knows this aswell.

Lets just hope , (because none of us know ) that rafa is able to get the players he wants and he thinks that will bring us title challenge next season. Be they worth £3 MILLION OR £30 MILLION.
UP THE PURPS !!!

Big signings DO NOT equal the title.

Really?? care to explain what these were, Rooney, Ronaldo, Ferdinand, Cech, Essien, Drogba, Robben, Henry, Bergkamp to mention but a few?

We have a good team ethic and strategy which has closed the gap when we play one off games against anyone, but we do not have absolute pure class in the final third, and over a 38 game period this deficiency will cost us. You say we outplayed the Mancs at home, so why didn't we win? IMO because there isn't a player in the team that can carry the ball with pace or who can be relied upon to score when only one half chance presents itself. None of our forwards would give any defender a sleepness night.

I don't advocate buying a name, but invariably someone of the class i described will not be cheap, and Bent does not fit the bill. Not a bad player, but we have the equivalent level at the club already, Crouch and Kuyt, both decent, hardworking team players, but not blessed with that something special, eg Rush, Owen and Fowler. Without a top quality forward coming to the club i do not see how we can win the league, we may compete valiantly, but that will be down to Rafa's strategy and the team ethos he has instilled.

By big signings I think he means big names or ones who cost a lot. You could argue that Henry was not a big signing when he joined Arsenal as he was not a big name at the time despite costing £14m, he certainly had the talent though. We spent the same on Ciise, but he was a pile of sh!te.

Like you say we need players with talent, not necessarily a player with a big name or a big fee. If they cost over £10m then so be it but it is not the case that big signings always win you the title. Arsenal hardly made a big signing prior to their unbeaten season in 03/04.

A big signing for me is someone who clearly has an extraordinary facet to their game, which will usually mean an expensive price tag, Henry at that time was a big signing, 14m was a lot 8 odd years years ago, the tabloids may not have known of him, but he was hardly slumming it at Juve, and more importantly Wenger knew him.
Big signings have always been present preceding a premier league title. Arsenal 03/04 season was the culmination of 8 years of hard work and planning by Wenger, imho they had purchased the special talents of Bergkamp Henry. I just believe that we are missing that special kind of player in our forward line, and they will probably be expensive.

I agree with you in so far as we need something a bit special, on the wings and up front IMO. Henry cost £10m, my mistake, and he never made an impact at Juve. It was only because Wenger knew of him from his time at Monaco where he was manager that he was willing to pay £10m. No-one else would have paid that much for a winger who couldn't cut it at Juve. So he was a relative unknown in the sense of not being a big name, just like Vieira was at Milan.

I don't think it takes a big name or very many expensive players to win the league. Arsenal are evidence enough, they never spent above £20m and rarely if ever ventured so far as to spend more than £10m on one player.

Wenger won the league in his second season so it can't be argued that it is not possible to do it with limted resources.

I would however say the scenario is changed when Abramovich came into the frame, now it is much more difficult to do what Wenger did without spending £10m+ on individual players.

Since bringing millions into the game it has placed more and more emphasis on spending more in order to keep up, in that respect Rafa has done a very good job up until now given our financial constraints in the past.

:oh: Sacrilege, hes one of the few ex pros IMO who still has the same passion and enthusiasm for the game now as he did when he played.

Still maintains that, if he had of been fit when we spanked Crystal Palace 9-0 then  Palace would of won

Top bloke and loves our club ( maybe he will have a word with Shaun   :eyebrow )

As you say the scenario has changed, the level of player in the prem has changed, now you need the best to win, as genuine world class players are here. Wenger had the advantage of knowing the continent better than the other EPL managers, and could get those players here, also a lot of foreign players were not rated here, the usual 'they can't hack it here' 'will they handle a wet wednesday in 'boro'.

I'd say Wenger is the exception to the rule, since the money has come in, only lavish spending has won the league, Blackburn, Manu and chelsi.

I'm not saying we send the club to debt busters, its just that the type of player i think we need, a top forward (Tevez), is going to cost a lot, and that a Bent is more of the same, nothing special.
I also don't want to see LFC shirts with 'Bent' on their backs :grinning:

Really ? Well why was Darren Bent in Liverpool yesterday?

And why has Benayoun handed in a transfer request when we are the only club that looks to have put a bid for him.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

I would be very pleased if we got him.  I know a few weeks ago he said Ronaldo is desperate to see him go to Milan but Robinho says his now happy at Madrid.

Can't stand him, never criticises any players, thinks England are going to win every match, totally one-eyed. Yeah he's passionate, but also thick.

A top player but definitely a top class muppet for punditry.

He has passion but he acts like Andy Pandy too much, a bit of a showoff.

Each to their own I say   :rasp
