Ban drinking alcohol, kills more people than cigs ever will.

But alcohol doesn't wonder over to the table nextdoor and harm you.

Alcohol is okay in moderation - in fact it is supposed to be good for you but there's nothing to suggest smoking is good for you. Only the "calms me nerves" argument.

well ive been smoking 7 years near enough 8, and i wanna quit cos of the amount of the money it drains and i see July 1st as a good time to start..

non-smokers shouldnt have to breathe our fumes, but smokers who have been persuaded into smoking by media and peers (as most were years ago) shouldnt be left in the lurch now just cos the government decides so, as it is physically addictive not just some random fashion statement to be dropped as easy as it is picked up...

it is what it is and will have to be dealt with anyhow..i think the world will end up like the Earth in Demolition man soon enough (upper part i mean) the way things are goin :;):

I think that it is up to the individual, of course, if they want to smoke.....

BUT....

The difference between smoking and anything else is that it DOES affect other people.

I have nothing against smokers....and yes, I have to admit, in my bedsit days I did try it...but didn't like it!

You must realise that passive smoking is a reality and people do get cancer from it.

It's not like you are chewing gum or anything that doesn't affect anyone else. Smoking affects people's health, whether they smoke or not and up 'til now the non smokers didn't have a choice whether they breathed it in or not.

I think it is very responsible to ban it.

I used to hate going to a restaurant and having to breath in smoke with my meal whether I wanted to or not.
Why should non smokers stay at home just because of the smokers?

I had a mate that used to smoke and if we went out then I accepted that I would be breathing in his smoke, but that was my choice.
Although he has now give up, which was nothing to do with me..as I never gave him a lecture

I used to sit opposite a lady at work who was a chain smoker. She sadly became ill and died of bone cancer.

It wasn't 'til I was working in a different dept that I realised that the reason my eyes watered and my nose ran was because of her smoke.

As I said before..it is up to the individual whether they smoke or not...and I know it is a hard habit to break...
It was said in the 'Panorama' thread that you cannot be a christian and smoke...well my uncle is and did smoke for years, only giving up recently.
I also once knew a vicar who smoked cigars...it's not ideal, I suppose, but not unheard of.

If cigarette smoke didn't affect anyone but the smoker there wouldn't be a problem...but it affects everyone who breathes it in and therefore, in my opinion, should be banned.

I don't think you can blame the "media and peers" for persuading people to smoke, it has been known for 50 years that smoking isn't good for you.

Maybe it was seen as "cool" to smoke some time back but to me it's just common biological sense - if you put smoke in your lungs it sure as heck isn't going to be good for you.

well if not "media and peers" then why else would you start smoking? maybe not EVERYONE who smokes started because of friends and constant in-your-face campaigning. but i think a fair few did start because of that....

and it is bad for you....but sometimes when its bad it still feeeeeels soo good

That's when you know you're hooked!

But to your other point, the reason people smoke may be because of their peers or in the past - the media. But they are not at fault - they may have influence over the decision - but ultimately you know the risks, you know the addictiveness etc.. It's down to you. The same applies to fast food, it's marketed in the media, you know the risks over a long period so ultimately it's down to you.

No, but the person thats been drinking it does. Ask any policeman, ambulance worker or A&E nurse which they prefer dealing with, someone who's had 10 cigs or someone who's had 10 pints. Ask all the wifes and kids who's husbands and fathers come home drunk and violent. All the people who's lives have been shattered by drink drivers etc etc.

Maybe I'm just "bitter" cos I can't drink anymore

i smoke because i like it. never tried to quit. maybe one day i will but dunno why. been smoking since 13 and 30 now.

i like the taste. there are times when having that cigarette is just...awesome. yeah im addicted but so what? i like it.

and im sorry if some people dont like it, but i say 'shut the f*ck up and grow a helmet'

Yes but that's the extreme scenario of what can happen when people are inebriated. Alcohol in moderation in a pub is not harmful to others, smoking is.

You could say if you drank too much orange squash and became hyper that you may also be a risk on the road!

The problem is there are too many people not drinking in moderation and causing problems.

So lets ban alcohol and ban Orange juice. Lets ban cars as well because they cause deaths and injury every day. Ban planes because they are a major cause of global warming.

Or maybe just pick on smokers cos they are an easy target.

They're all separate issues, deal with drunkenness on its own.

Smoking harms people passively, in moderation alcohol does not. Smoking around people is irresponsible in my view and disrespectful, why should non-smokers be harmed by someones else's dirty habit. It's about compromise, the compromise on the part of smokers is to go outside for a quick fag, the compromise for non-smokers is to go to a different pub in a different area. I don't see how the compromise for smokers is so radical?

Is it really so hard to go outside, or go into the beer garden to smoke?

I think that's a reasonable compromise, workers have to be protected aswell - that is one of the MAIN reasons for this ban.

but why not have a smoking pub and a non smoking pub? let the people decide democratically, not a bunch or ar$es in suits in westminster.

this country has severely gone to the $hit the last few years. we need a world war or something to bring the people together.

why should non smokers health be put at risk??? What have they ever done to smokers???

Roll on July 1st....and if you smokers don't like it 'grow a helmet'...although remember 'smoke gets in you eyes'
