Kop 40 - Our greatest premiership games

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby NiftyNeil » Sun Jun 10, 2007 3:31 pm

The official Liverpool website is now taking votes on our greatest Premiership games.
The 5 that I've voted for are:

1. Liverpool 4 . 3 Newcastle  (1996)
Probably the best Premiership match yet and is a no brainer for my number one spot.

2. Everton 2 . 3 Liverpool   (2001)
This was my favourite league game of our treble winning season. We were down to ten men, blew our lead, Robbie missed a pen then Gary Mac snatched it at the death with that audacious free kick.

3. Liverpool 2 . 0 Man Utd   (2001)
Another one from the treble season. The Mancs didn't get near us that day. It also meant that we did the double over them for the first time in years. Remember Stevies goal??

4. Liverpool 2 . 1 Arsenal   (2004)
Rafa's first season and his first game against Arsenal. Arsenal had been all conquering the season before and we hadn't beaten them since the FA cup final in 2001. Two great goals from Alonso and Vierra had the game all square, setting the stage for "Gerd" Mellor to steal the show in the last minute.

5. Liverpool 4 . 0 Arsenal   (2000)
This is the fifth one I voted for, but in hindsight I can think of much better. It's always good to spank Arsenal though. It was a comprehensive win over a better team than us.

Well that's my five, what would you lot go for?

Tough one to pick a top 5. There are a few exceptions though. The Newcastle game (twice) is an obvious no brainer for the top pick, though. However, I feel that there have been more tense and more crucial games that better it for importance. For the entertainment scale, it's off the chart so it gets my number 1.

1. Liverpool v Newcastle (1996)
There were two of these epic games between the two same teams. The one at Anfield when Collymore scored the last minute winner is the one that stands out.

2. Liverpool v Arsenal (1994/1995)
The fastest ever hat-trick to be scored in a game of football, timed at 4:32. Scored by 'God' of course - Robbie Fowler.

3. Liverpool v Manchester United (2001)
The game at Anfield during the cup trebble winning season. Riise almost snapped the crossbar in half with his piledriver of a free kick that left Bartez fearing for his life.

4. Everton v Liverpool (2001)
The game that had a lot at stake, and it was a Derby which made it even the more thrilling to watch. It looked like they were robbing us of a deserved victory, when Macca had other plans and guided in a well placed last minute 40-yarder from a free kick for the win. Stick that in yer pipe and smoke it!

5. Liverpool v Chealsea (2006/2007)
Chelsea's ego trip to Anfield meant to many Chelsea fans that they were going to put us in our place as an inferior team to them at our own ground. Wasn't to be. They had their ego's flattened and were put in their place with another dominant display from Liverpool against them and topped off with a fantastic goal from Pennant, reminding them that "This Is Anfield" and not Goodison Park.

Riise scoring that free kick was in a different game, the season after I think?

1: Liverpool 4 - Newcastle 3 - 1995/6 - I have never gone THAT mental before

2: Liverpool 4 - Newcastle 3 - 1996/7 - We should never have been pulled level but still what a game, we were unbelievable for 70 minutes.

3: Man Utd 3 - Liverpool 3 - 1993/4 - amazing comeback

4: Everton 2 - Liverpool 3 - 2000/01 - amazing game, not only a derby but was just one of Gary Mac's crucial goals in the run-in that year.

5: Liverpool 3 - Manu Utd 1 - 2001/02 - Totally dominated them and that bullet from Riise.

Nope. It was 2001. His first season, I think.

We won the treble in 00/01, Riise scored that goal at the start of the next (01/02) season.

the first 4-3 against newcastle was the best game of football (in terms of entertainment) that i've seen. it just summed everything up about newcastle and liverpool at the time. both were superb going forward but couldn't defend for toffee.  :D
