It's a disgrace, to think this cra.p can be written in Ireland's most popular paper is an eye opener to me.

Any Irish reds make sure you boycott the paper and if you see anyone reading it burn it.

Let Manhattan examine this individuals words.

Really, just when you think people can't get any more thin- skinned, stupid and prickly, you forget that God invented Scousers.

Classic "ad hominem" attack to deflect attention from the fact that he's being corrected on the nonsense that he's written. Instead of actually addressing the points that matter, he resorts to insults.

This column recently pointed out, quite reasonably, that Liverpool's self-mythologising, sense of permanent victimhood, and quite nauseating self-regard made it undoubtedly the most irritating city in Europe.

More ad hominem attacks, and the column that he wrote (quite unreasonably actually) labelled Liverpool as having the worst fans in Europe, which was officially denied by the head of UEFA.

And guess what? Liverpool natives and Liverpool fans alike were outraged at...being accused of being easily outraged.

Wrong, Liverpool fans took exception to being falsely accused of something that, as pointed out, has officially been denied by UEFA.

Among the slew of emails which came in - ranging from the upset to the completely mental - were some gems, which rather proved the point of the original piece.

It proved nothing of the sort. All it proved is that a bigoted and false article filled with personal attacks and insults will attracted heated reactions.

Amidst the dire warnings of boycotts, physical revenge and general sense of an institutionalised persecution complex - all the trademarks of the professional Scouser -

Physical revenge no reasonable person would condone, however a boycott is a fully reasonable reaction any consumer has the right to take part in. As for a persecution complex, it isn't a complex if the persecution is in fact real.

some of the sentiments included: "I am disgusted by Ian O'Doherty's bigoted/racist comments about the people of Cork and Liverpool in Tuesday's edition of the Independent..." "Some might consider it racist..."

It certainly would be considered bigoted at least.

"These comments are certainly prejudice and are bordering on a form of racism and, although you may dismiss this because one cannot label a region a race, I must remind you that Merseyside has almost 1 million people living within, thus that is nearly one million people prejudged. Although I personally will never read your newspaper again, I would appreciate a reply."

Sounds reasonable.

But what is really repugnant is the number of mails which mentioned Hillsborough, despite the fact that Hillsborough - the one real human tragedy which shocked not Liverpool but anyone who loves football - was never mentioned in the piece.

Still, it's all part of the mosaic of self-pity, eh?

A person who labels an entire group of people as scum for falsely being called the worst fans in Europe has no moral authority to be outraged over a mention of another incident in football where another so-called journalist decided to lie for the sake of attracting attention.

Although, coming from a city where the book of condolences for Ken Bigley was actually stolen, who cares what they think?

False, the book of condolence for Mr Bigley was stolen from Birmingham, not Liverpool.

i am presuming u are talking about my comment on a typical dublin w'nker, let me explain to you what i am talking about, it is quite typical of a dubliner such as doherty to have a go at the city of cork, ive witnessed it many many times in the time i lived in dublin. The amount of condescending patronising and insulting comments from dubliners to non-dubliners about where non dubliners are from would stagger you. O Dohertys article is just another example of this.......
i'l rephrase my insult it to keep you happy...Ian o doherty is a w@nker from dublin as opposed to being a dublin w@nker.....as for having a chip on my shoulder....thats just a cork trait...... corkonian first, irishman second. :D

Agreed! Preferebly sacked first, then beaten, then shot. But don't just blame him. I blame his boss and editor for allowing such things to be printed under their banner. But, karma is a bitch. He'll get what's coming, I'm sure. I hope so anyway. Words fail me. What a total cunt!

I'm with you on that one also. I myself have come under some abuse from people from the city, simply because I live in the north. I'm from Limerick originally. I've come to find that a lot of people from Dublin are pretty arrogant. Much like Americans seem to hate New Yorkers for being the same way. It's the main city (or most famous) in the country, so that brings with it an air of superiority and bullheadedness. Not all, but most! I don't like to single out individuals, so if I'm causing offense, it's not my intention to do so.

Believe me, if I seen that rag, I'd simply pass it by. It's hard to get where I am anyway. Some outlets sell it, but it's not a paper I'd pick up. In either case, I don't really like to read papers like that, if at all. I'm not the kind of fella to take for granted what the media wants to say. Anyway, if this is the so called standard this so called paper wants to live up to, then it's got nothing going for it. Really pathetic and shoddy wastefulness of resources. The writer in question obviously has NO f*cking talent whatsoever if he's resorting to petty insults just because he supports the red shyte. It's really pathetic and shows a true deformation in that guys character as a credible journalist. What a small time f*ckwit!

I'm from Cork (the place compared to Liverpool in the article).  Ian O'Doherty is a complete :censored: of a journalist.  He appears on radio shows regularly making controversial comments about everything.  I don't know anybody that likes the overweight :censored: head and i'm surprised the independent printed the article.

I'm from Limerick and living in Dublin and while obviously all dubs aren't like that, there is a certain arrogance that the capital city is all that counts and everywhere else is backward - think London with different accept.

The indo used to be a proper newspaper but now is more like a scummy British tabloid (e.g. the sun) but kept in broadsheet so it looks "respectable"

Dublin media hates the other cities like Cork and Limerick (especially Limerick) the same way London media hates Liverpool and Manchester - well anything north really.

He's just a WUM.

The kind of people who will say anything to get a reaction.

Nothing he said is supported by factual evidence.
