The next couple of years will be absolutely critical for the club.

We can all talk about LFC being the most successful club in English football but it's been 14 years since we did anything of note ie. winning the league title.

We are of course still a massive club, but our pulling power is being diminished every year that goes by without winning the title, or at least going close.

The fact that SG was on the brink of leaving coupled with Owen's reservations are very significant.

The past two years under GH have done serious damage to the club in trying to build a championship winning side. Realistically, we won't win the title this coming season, nor the one after that.

Our new coach's challenge is to get us relatively close. If we do that, we will be able to attract top class players. If we don't bridge the gap, which currently is massive, then we will lose our best players and fail to attract the best.

Chelsea and United have greater financial clout and will attract the best. Arsenal don't have the money but they do have an amazing team.

We need to bridge that gap over the next couple of years.

arsenal are the epitomy of a perfectly run football club at the moment. they don't have much money but their ability to bring in quality players for peanuts is what sets them apart form the rest. their team spirit is also superb. all the players get on really well and this shows through on the pitch with their team huddles after scoring.

however, man united's days of breaking the bank and attracting absolute "world stars" are coming to an end. they are a plc now and they are obligated to consider the views of shareholders on any major transfer dealings. if they think that alan smith, liam miller, gabriel heinze are going to make them champions, they can think again.

See i'm glad even on the most elite of forums (Wink) we can still hold a reasonable sense of humour.

But, back to topic. I for one am scared of a plateau with the squad that may have already taken place,i know we have a new gaffa, raffa ,but what if the damage has already been done by events from last season and over the summer?.

I love this club so sometimes my sense of reasoning disappears down the plug hole, but how can we as an (Empire) Lfc move forward even with the great manager we have if our players have been warped and dishartened by the bosses predessesor?.

Anyway i cant wait new season new style of play and renewed hope that once again we can hold our heads as high as the clouds.

              Walk On. :;):

My biggest fear for the coming season is Cisse failing.

We have been cursed every time we have spent big over the past 12-15 years, since the days of Souness' big buys.

Clough, Saunders, Stewart, Collymore, Heskey, Diouff: all have failed.

I just hope that Cisse doesn't turn into a 9 goal a season "wonder" who'll be derided across the country for the next couple of years.

Hopefully he'll succeed: if he does, and Benetiz can fix some other problem areas, we could be back in business.

Yeah, Cisse has got to stop this alarming curse on our big money buys.

I think he's up to it.

2 biggest(realistic) fears for lfc:

1-That an offer to buy a large stake in the club from a foreign invester is accepted where the invester uses the club as his play thing, throwing money into it and making demands at the manager to play a certain type of football and buy certain players a la abramovich, eventually loosing his interest in the club, pulling out and leaving the club in financial turmoil with huge debts and a multimillion pound wage build which exceeds most clubs'.

2-That the talents of Milan Baros are not wasted at the club as they were under houllier and that the manager makes the mistake of selling him. This is a player who is clearly enthusiastic about his future and has a lot to offer to the club. His Euro 04 displays are an indication of what he is capable and imo he COULD play a bigger part in the teams next few seasons than owen or season.

Touch wood nothing mentioned above does happen
Steve Gerrard Gerrard,
He'll pass the ball 40 yards,
He's quick and he's f*cking hard,
Steve Gerrard Gerrard.

:bump.... seems like a huge amount of peoples fears are actually about to rear their ugly heads
It seems some fears remain a constant and people need to realize they have now surfaced  in a very real and tangible sense
Its also a fact if you read all the posts in this thread they are all in the main joined together by one common denominator the loss of our assets mainly Gerrard and the acceptance of mediocrity
Couple that with the horror of losing the best striker in the World game and the best holding midfielder and being saddled with an infeasibly large debt and you have Liverpool Football Club  2010

Wow bumping this thread gives a sense of perspective.

Considering the fears of some just as Rafa reign was about to start in 2004

Now you look at what we are facing now at end of Rafa era in 2010.

Oh for our main fears to be the talents of Baros being wasted and Cisse being failure as they were in 2004
