My point exactly Rushie, the basic principle that increased competition will benefit the customer does not work in this situation. Fans want to watch their own team, not a random selection on either of Setanta or Sky, fans are effectively forced to buy both packages if they want to see all the live games their team is going to play.

The Premier League would never put a caveat in the bidding that stipulates a terrestrial channel must receive one of the live packages, terrestrial channels can't afford to compete. They can compete for the other packages, such as highlight programmes e.g. Match of the Day. But there isn't room in their budget for that, and you can't expect the Premier League to place such a caveat in there - they are purely concerned with getting as much money as they can for thier member clubs.

I think that had the EU placed the clause that so many games a season MUST be shown on terrestrial free to view then this may have been a better deal for the fans as they claimed to be opening up the market for TV rights to benefit the fans in the long run IIRC. By no means should the BIG games have to be opened up to this but having say 10 games a season on terrestrial that feature each team at least once would be a better deal for the fans. Indeed it may even help the subscription broadcasters attract new subscribers that may get hooked on having the games beemed direct into their living rooms.

Common sense but never gonna happen in a million years.

Its becoming more and more based towards people who can afford it, at first low deal packages so that skint people can buy it, working class can get low deal packs plus movies and sports, rich people can get low deal, movies and sports and ppvs.
Same things happening in stadiums, supporters can afford tickets, and if its a major final they boost the price and get what they can but its the rich people who can get the tickets and the guaranteed safety of there seat for the people who want to be in there with the others, those who dont want to be involved with the commoners get "boxes" with there own buffet.

If you live in a cable area ask around and there will be someone who can sort you out a chipped box for a couple of hundred. Had one when i was at Uni, never a problem in 2 years.

It's totally to the fans disadvantage this bollox that the EU have imposed. As I was reading on RAWK earlier, the armchair fan will now have to pay the minimum subscription of £34p/m for Sky Sports plus £5p/m for three months and then £15p/m thereafter for Setanta sports.

$ky Sports = £408* per year

Setanta Sports = £150 this year.

Total = £558 for one years viewing of all premiership football. Compare this to last season when at minimum you'd have paid:

$ky Sports = £408*

Prem Plus = £50 season ticket.

Total = £458 pounds.

*Based on current price for the minimum required to receive $ky Sports.

How is that better for the fans? The idea in principal of spreading the rights around was good but as usual hasn't been implemented properly. As a poster on RAWK pointed out, the bureaucrats have possibly naively thought that spread the rights about and the companies would enter into a price war. Not gonna happen when only one broadcaster is getting the rights to each game i.e. both broadcasters can't show the same game. It would have been better for the fans had a requirement been put in place that one of the TV packages had to go to a terrestrial or free to view broadcaster.

Setanta is a rip off as well, you pay £15 pound a month for a couple of premiership games and what else? Football from bloody Serbia or whatever. At least with Sky Sports you pay £20 a month (its something like that if u deduct the fees for other channels) and you get some quality sport included.
