Sabre wrote:The most concerning to me is the timing. I don't expect a Chelsea-esque budget, but I'd expect Rafa knowing by now what money he'll have at his disposal. If he doesn't know that how will he target reasonable players?

Maybe it's a tactic in the other hand. Maybe he knows, but he doesn't want to tell the market "hey, I've got lots of money" otherwise the players would be more expensive just because of that.

On the contrary, when conducting Business like Man U and Chelsea have - it's about landing your targets before anyone gets a sniff on them. The football business world is not unlike any other business - people working in that world, know what's going on behind the scenes. Rafa cannot keep major targets *hidden* for too long. Which is why Man U and Chelsea have wasted no time in getting theirs.

In my opinion, Rafa may have a limited budget (as in around the £30m mark)- and has decided to spend the bulk of it on a striker. I believe he knows we need another top class winger this season, and is looking to off-load a couple of regulars to make that 2nd big purchase (or 2 in the range of £10mil).

Rafa is caught between a rock and a hard place. He believes he cannot spend wildy and constantly keeps Liverpool's financial future in mind.

Fergie and Mourinho on the other hand are a breed apart due to different financial scenarios. Fergie spent huge last week since he knows Man U have the ticket revenue to recoup a lot of that. Chelsea is funded by a billionaire of proportions that Hicks / Gillet cannot compare to - and so Mourinho has no *fear* of spending and does not worry about how the club will re-coup the cash.

As astute a businessman as Rafa *potentially* is, I can only hope that he gets Hicks/Gillet to fire Parry and bring in a businessman  in the role of Managing Director, so that he can get on with coaching and leave business to the business people.

I am even begining to wonder if the record (14 million) signing for Liverpool will be broken this summer. I mean the prices for some of the galacticos we have been linked with are easily double what we paid for Cisse. But will we sign anyone in that price range, i wonder.

Alves bidding begins

Spanish reports claim Chelsea and Milan have both lodged offers for Sevilla ace Daniel Alves, but it is claimed Real Madrid remain favourites to clinch his signature.

Liverpool have also been linked with the attack minded full-back, but it seems they are yet to make their move.

Milan and Chelsea are understood to have made contact but the offer from the English club is bigger at €24million (£16.2million), with the Italians tabling a €20million (£13.5million) bid.

Sevilla are ready to deal for Alves and are now considering their options.

---------

if rumours are to be believed, we're just about to miss out on alves, again.

Sevilla are ready to deal for Alves and are now considering their options.

Chelsea made their move after their Spanish scout Juan Cruz Sol watched him in action against Real Zaragoza last month and he submitted another glowing report.

Real are yet to unveil their hand - but it seems that they could very well offer players in exchange including former Sevilla star Julio Baptista, who spent last season on loan at Arsenal.

Now the bidding has started for Alves, the player will need to consider his options and initial reports suggest Real Madrid is his preferred option.

I repeat from page 31:

Liverpool out of race to sign Alves

Jun 4 2007

By Nick Smith, Liverpool Daily Post

LIVERPOOL are set to drop out of any chase to sign Sevilla’s in - demand wing-back Daniel Alves.

Rafael Benitez pursued the player last summer, but the La Liga club’s refusal to lower their £12milion asking price eventually forced the Liverpool manager to turn his attention to securing Jermaine Pennant and Dirk Kuyt instead.

Alves’s agent last week revealed that the Brazilian was determined to leave the UEFA Cup winners at the end of the Spanish season, which is still a fortnight away from concluding.

But Liverpool’s joint chief scout Eduardo Macia has told the Spanish media that filling the right side berth Alves prowls for cub and country is not a priority for Benitez.

"We’ve dropped our interest," said Macia. "Instead of him we signed Jermaine Pennant and okay, so he’s a winger, but Alves plays very high up the pitch.

"We’ve also got Alvaro Arbeloa who can play in that position.

"In football you can never say never but at the moment we’re not interested."

Before the transfer window opened last season Benitez said he wanted all our transfers finished before the start of the world cup, we finished up still signing players after the season had started. Again he has said he wanted to get the transfers sorted quickly and again we seem slow out of the blocks. G.Milito a player who I would really have liked to come, and one of Rafa's rumoured main targets has now agreed terms with Juventus, how many more are we going to lose before we get our act together?

Supposedly we went in with a late bid for Nani only for the player to choose the Mancs, and we lost out. Maybe if we had got in first he may have chosen us.

If the targets were those, Milito, or Nani, then yes, it would be worrying. But rumours are rumours... as has been proved.

I hope Rafa and parry are doing well, in a couple of weeks we'll be able to talk about what we have done and what he haven't. It's true that it's worrying that in the mean time that Rafa says he hasn't spoken of budget yet, Manchester are signing up. But maybe it's as other mate described "playing his cards close to his chest".

In 15-20 days, we'll be able to comment better, based on facts, not speculation.

has Milito gone?  I know Juve's first bid was rejected.  he has a £21million release clause so it will cost at least £15m.

Well, I agree, this is a rumour thread, about signing ups.

If you want to make a point about Rafa being slow in signing ups, don't use this thread, and don't use rumours to make your point. :) . This is also a discussion forum, if you don't want answers, make a blog. I'll be a regular reader if you do.

exactly everything is still up in the air. There is a huge difference this transfer season compared to last and that is that we have major money to spend whereas we didn't last year. That is why we got pipped to the post so many times. I reckon we already have our signings in the bag and they may well not be the ones that we expect. Hopefully by the end of next week we should have everything sorted out and pen wil have been put to paper. Interesting that Hicks said that there is one big singing this week that all the fans will like, I wonder who that could be, I really really hope its not owen, I do NOT want that clown back in a Liverpool shirt and in any case i doubt Rafa would want him. Tevez would be my dream signing together with Malouda and Gamst Pederson, that would give us a hell of an attack for next season. I'd also try and get hold of Riise baby borther as cover onthe right side of midfield, he looks very usefull and genuinely loves Liverpool.
