Kluivert - Dou you want him?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Liverpool emerged on Saturday night as surprise favourites to land Dutch star Patrick Kluivert who is available on a free transfer from Barcelona.

New Reds manager Rafael Benitez has told his board to sign the Dutchman who is being hawked around English clubs such as Middlesbrough, Newcastle and Aston Villa.

Newcastle are still interested but Liverpool are moving in quickly for the forward freed by Barcelona. With no transfer fee Benitez thinks a wage offer of £60,000 a week will be good business.

Benitez is already welcoming Djibril Cisse, and with Michael Owen and Milan Baros, the arrival of Kluivert would give him four top international strikers.

Although Kluivert comes with some 'baggage' Benitez feels he can mould the player into a force for Liverpool. A deal could take place this week.

Do we want him or not?

Hey! I gotta letter from PK, here it is, but don't be jalous  :D

Dearest Cheesecrackernuts,

Thanks for your letter. I take it as a compliment.
I was born in 01/07/76 and hit the big time with Dutch giants Ajax as a teenager. I attracted plenty of interest after scoring the only goal of the European Cup final against AC Milan in 1995. It was the beaten Italian side who clinched his signature, but I never settled and a more productive move to Barcelona followed. I boasts an impressive scoring record for his country, averaging a goal every two games. I did not appear comfortable when asked to play behind Ruud van Nistelrooy in the run-up to Euro 2004. But I can still be a potent force, as a goalscorer in his own right or setting up opportunities for team-mates.

Love
Patrick Kluivert

I remember Kluivert as a very gifted goal scoring teenager. His playing style and technique would be suitable to the Premiership.

The only problem is that he has been palgued by injuries in the past few seasons and seems to be getting on a bit at 28 now. Just wonder if he can recapture his form. If that happens, he will be a fantastic prospect as he can hold up the ball and is technically better then RVN. RVN is a better predator.

Once again theres really no point getting him cause he will not be willing to sit on the bench [a bit like the Baros situation] so I think we should leave it as it is.

I' still undecided. There no doubt that he is class and on a free it's good business but £60,000 a week may put a strain on our already expanding wage bill.

Do we need 5 international strikers?  Theres a balance between covering for players and just pure stupidity.  Kluivert and Diouff and one other would probably wind up on the bench or in  reserves and would simply be a huge amount of extra wages.

I think signing Kluivert would be a big mistake. Anyone noticed how little interest there is from the big clubs? This is for a reason i'm sure. Most likely his attitude. I would leave him to sign for likes of Bolton. We have 3 cracking strikers already and it will be hard enough keeping them happy as it is. Pongolle or Kewell can fill the 4th strikers birth so we are well sorted in that department.

i think we should take a gamble on him, incase cisse turns out to be a bad buy at least we'll have him as a other option plus he can play behind owen and cisse as the link up man remember him playing there against us in the uefa cup he done the job then lets be honest the played us of the park. so we should take a gamble on a big player for once rather then sh*t out houllier style.
