Rafael Benítez wrote:I do think that we have underachieved this season. But if you asked Rafa I believe he would still tell you that he is 3-4 years away from winning the premiership title or even challenging to do so properly.

ok i agree that we have undreachieved, and the comment about being 3 or 4 years away from winning the league can i supose be understood.

but we can not be 3 or 4 years away from beating the likes of sheffield utd or fulham, seriously.

this is the thing that gets to me,  he is saying we are 3 years away from winning the title, but if we were able to beat sh!te like i mention above then we would be a damn site closer. and why have we not been performing against these clubs, because he messed about too much with the team, simple and factual (cue people now saying he was tactically out smarted or the players where tired or we had injuries)

some people mention that towards the end of the season we had nothing to play for the league so it was acceptable to not perform. i have never heard such garbage in my life, we may as well as just not turned up if the players were going to go out there with that attitude (and some of the games i do think they had that attitude).

but the thing is if we didnt throw it away at the start of the season we would have had something to play for, even players now cant be bothered playng for their place as they know it wont guarentee them a place in the team (crouch for example)

anyway lets hope wednesday saves this dismal season and lets hope next season we actually look like we want to win the league, them mancs are catching up rapidly and i would hate them to overtake us in titles.

i know some of you are youngsters and i hate to harp on like some old f@rt, but guys there is nothing better that winning the title, its a real sign of greatness, a sign of consistently being better than everyone else in the country. the european cup is great, i have seen all 5, but i have also seen many titles and stood on the kop in the deciding game, it is pure heaven when the goal oes in that will decide the title for you.

i hope some of you guys get to sample that soon,

and the rock, sorry mate but you are happy to finish top 10, come on are you being serious    :D

Dude.....Thats only half the truth...maybe i wasn't really clear :p

I will be happy with a top ten finish if we WIN the champions league...... So i will be able to stomach top 10 finishes for a few more years if we win the champions league that year  :D

I know the purist fans prefer the league....but for me, i prefer to be called champions of europe than champions of england..... But winning the premier league wouldn't be that bad......  :p  (I hope red nosed AF is reading this......)

I think that most people here are saying the same thing, and that the level of dissapointment is down to whether you felt we has a chance to win the league or not.

[quote]Peewee. some people mention that towards the end of the season we had nothing to play for the league so it was acceptable to not perform. i have never heard such garbage in my life, we may as well as just not turned up if the players were going to go out there with that attitude (and some of the games i do think they had that attitude)

This is garbage yet you think it happened? It is not acceptable as a supporter, but it explains what has happened.
It is nonsense to suggest that we should not have bothered turning up, the players had chances to win those games, eg Fulham and Robbies 2 clear chances. It is obvious that when you have nothing to play for the level of intensity and committment will drop, not just this year and with LFC, it happens all the time.
Rafa is supposed to have messed about with the team, well check out the teams that started against Everton, Man city, blackburn and Middlesborough, they were pretty much our strongest sides, but we didn't perform.
Rafa has always rotated, even during last seasons great run from October to may he rotated every game.
Yeah poor starts have cost us the chance to compete, but unfortunatly we have bought in lots of new players each of the last 2 years, this is not an excuse, it is a fact.
Ah 5shit the quote thing didn't work!

Next season will show whether this team is good enough and whether we did underachieve or not this season. I'd give players like Gonzalez, Aurelio and Pennant another season and if they fail to deliver, OUT! As for fergie, I think he has the trophy that we desperatly want(the premiership) but we're gonna have the trophy he desperatly wants on wednesday when we beat milan. Just think, he's won one European Cup in 21 years, so its gonna hurt him when he sees rafa win his 2nd in 3 years!

So we will be hearing the same excuse again next season, as almost everyone expects us to buy at least another 3 players for next season, 7 players according to some!. I thought that part of the idea of having pre season games was to integrate new players into the squad. If thats not the case maybe we should do as Mick suggested and stick with what we have till we have built up some momentum in the league and integrate the new signings gradually over the course of the season.

Maybe we could use the League cup to introduce new players instead of using it as a run out for our reserves?

league cup should be for testing starting-line up wannabes.....i think we can get away with 2 QUALITY signings, up front and in midfield and with the return of Kewell and garcia we should be set for a title sniff.
Dont think we need as much as 7 players..

Lots of new signings are going to cause disruption, that is a fact,  but i believe Rafa has the core of his squad, plus a fit Kewell and Garcia will make a big difference. I don't believe we need more than 2 top players (Forwards), and only they will be expected to go into the 1st team. Voronin and Lucas can be filtered in through the season. If thats the case then you won't be hearing about new players bedding in.
This summer is about enhancing our sqaud, most of the rebuilding, imo, has been carried out.
You think that 3 weeks of pre-season is enough to integrate the players?!!
The fact is that the last 4 seasons have been unprecedented in that teams have won the title with records points totals and by only losing 0-4 games, and that is a massive challenge to overcome when you are coming to a team that required massive changes.
If we get the funds and players Rafa wants, then this will the season to EXPECT a real challenge for the league.

Chelsea signed  Parker, Chech, Robben,Ferreira, Kezman, Drogba, Tiago,Carvaliho all in July 2004 I didn't hear them making excuses about integration when the were holding the League Title the following May. Infact I think they only lost one game before April!

They were also second in the league and semi finalists in CL and Fa cup the season before under Ranieri, so i don't think that was a club in trouble, in fact it was a team on the up.
You blow your own point out of the water when you compare Mareens 1st choice buys with what Rafa could afford to bring in.

So we were a team in trouble, having just achieved our record points total and been the form team from October to May the preceeding year. I think you have just blown your argument out of the water   :D  I think you could say WE were the team on the up mate.
