Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

AS Ciggy said we don't have the right to win the league - despite expectations there has to be realism on what Rafa can achieve given the squad he inherited and the one he is trying to build to sustain a challenge.

There are only 4 trophies to be won - and we have won the most important one in Europe, and the 2nd most improtant domestically. The league will come I fully believe that!

We've reached 2 European Cup finals in three seasons and won the FA Cup as well between then, all without any decent wing players (please god can we get Simao and Alves in the Summer...) and without a single 20-goal-a-season finisher since the days of Owen's brilliance in the treble season. I think considering our team isnt as far ahead of the likes of Tottenham man for man that everyone considers it to be, we've been punching above our weight for seasons now.

We need players like Alves, Simao and Villa. Without those type of big name players (what Alan Hansen always refers to as Matchwinners) we will not win the league, because we need players who are going to step up and grab a vital goal and all 3 points in scrappy games like Aston Villa away on a cold, rainy day in Birmingham when the rest of a team has failed to really turn up. So, given the poorness of so many players in our squad (zenden, paletta, gonzalez) I think that this has been an acceptable season. ???

Well I think it's high time I moved on now. I'll not comment any mor eon rotation until nearer next season other than this. During a spell of drawn games at the start of (I think) last season when we dropped points willy nilly, Rafa said words to the effect of: "I remember one year in Spain we drew six out of the first nine (or whatever it was), people laughed but we went on to win the title". Well it's taken three seasons, but i hope he has learnt now, if you give Man Utd and/or Chelsea a ten point start in the first few weeks it is over because they ain't dropping points later on to get you back into it. If you're ten points behind, even after four games you are gone.

Given that, the first game of the season (be it Sheffield United Away or whoever) is vital. You'd better make sure you put THE strongest team you can on the park, and you'd better make sure that during the pre-season games, these lads have played and are revved up and ready to rock. That's my last word on this subject.

the thing is guys, the way to win the epl is to claim vociferously for every throw in/free kick/hand ball/ off side/funny glance and we are just not like that. As far as european footy connoisseurs are concerned, the champions league final is the only place to be seen, and we are there, again. We were all dissapointed to only win the FA cup last year,  but rest assured chelsea are just as dissapointed tonight. Wednesday is soon upon us guys, savour every moment. walk on with hope.

Liverpool boss Benitez hoping for transfer boost
tribalfooball.com - May 19, 2007

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez hopes the combination of Champions League glory and new American money will give him a big boost in this summer's transfer market.
Benitez said: "No one has said to me 'You can have this much money'. It's just 'OK, tell us which players you want, give us a description'.

"Winning the final would make us more money, so it would be a help. Winning makes everything better.

"We need to start well next season and if we are close to the top from the beginning I think we'll be contenders.

"I think we can improve mentally and also maybe bring in some new players.

"I will be looking for players with character.

"We need to improve away, especially.

"We had hard away games at the start of the season but when you are so far off the top it is difficult to focus on winning every game.

"That's maybe why we are better in the Champions League, where you just have to win one game.

"If the question is can we improve next season, I would answer yes.

"If the question is will we win the title, well that depends on the others.

"They will be spending money and trying to improve as well.

"We thought we were good but United have been fantastic."

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I think Rafa has answered most of the points raised in this thread.

I do think that we have underachieved this season. But if you asked Rafa I believe he would still tell you that he is 3-4 years away from winning the premiership title or even challenging to do so properly. So on that front I think that people hype this Liverpool team up a bit too much and expect to much in the league.

Liverpool could dominate Europe for the next few years with Rafa at the helm but i guarantee you, he would tell you he needs different types of players to challenge for the premiership title. Players who really believe they can win it, players who have the fight and guts to go away from home and thrash out 1 - 0 wins. Players who will play a certain way for the team and engineer results all season long. At the moment I don't believe we have enough of these players at the club.

I would like to see Liverpool buying talented ambitious players hungry to learn from Rafa and succeed. Kuyt is a prime example. He's the type of player that Rafa believes will bring success. Hard working, clever, determined, no airs and graces.. I read in papers people saying he doesn't get enough goals but he'll play in the big games cause Rafa knows exactly what he'll get from him. Thats what it boils down to with Benitez. He wants players to do the job thats asked of them. Why was Gerrard dropped in some important games  last season, not because he was been rested but because Benitez believed that other players were more disciplined and this would benefit the team better. Gerrard has learned over the last 2 years that this is the case.  A gifted player he is, but in today's game it's only a disciplined team, and players that will bring you a premiership glory.

Benitez is an excellent manager and i believe that LFC have a nucleus to build a fantastic squad but he still needs time. Can people wait. I hope they will.

Reina, Finnan, Risse, Agger, Carragher, Gerrard, Mascherano, Kuyt, Alonso. Thats the nucleus. Any suggestions.

This season will be a joy no matter what happens. We have produced magnificent performances in Europe and thats what this team is cut out for at the moment. Hopefully in the coming seasons Benitez will have added players who will have a greater influence in their bid for Premiership trophies.

i know what your saying about disciplined players but sometimes sides need that x factor to spark a team into life, look at united, they were close to the league for a couple of years but it was a loose cannon like cantona who gave them that self belief.
but your general point is right, its a team game, and thats why we dominated europe at a time when the likes of maradona and platini were plying their trade in europe, and not just liverpool, sides like forest and villa had success because back then english sides worked their :censored: off for each other.

Bang on.....I said it in an earlier post but this season and last we have been killed by a bad start. In fact last season we were only 9 points behind the winners having been far adrift earlier in the season.....take out the first ten games and we'd have won the league......for all this talk of signing super stars and not rotating the squad and changing this and that I think Rafa's biggest priority for next season is to start well....if we are up there with Chelsea and Man Utd in November then they will start to think, it will add pressure on them and who knows...come May we might be a lot closer than we have been in years.

I agree it cant be said weather is a bad season or not until the CL Final, a dissaponiting season would be one with no trophy.

Also dnt forget with the owners i think we should pay what ever we need to keep SG, because we all know what he has done for the club so far and what he can do in the future!

guys...guys....guys....and gals.....

Lets delay this discussion until after the champions league final. I mean...i wouldn't be ar$sed where we finish in the league (as long as it is top 10) as long as we win the champions league. But that's me.....and i know quite a few here would prefer the premier league.

I respect that...but lets just delay this. Lets give 100% support to our lads at athens.

The way i see it...if we win the champions league...it would be a successful season. If we don't, then it would be a disappointing season.....Thats how thin the line is. So lets just discuss this after the final......
