Your all cheeky bast.ards if you don't mind me saying.

A CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL is just round the corner and everyone's picking holes inour team that finished 3rd for the 2nd consective year.

GIVE THE LADS AND THE MANAGER A BREAK.

3 finals in 3 years.

If I would of said 3 years ago, hey lads would you be happy with 2 European cups and a F.A cup under Rafa in the next 3 years? You would of all creamed your pants with that.

Rafa's overperformed for me, and now the fans are expecting far too much. Give him time, he's deffo the man who bring the league home.

If someone had said you will finish 5th, 3rd and 4th in the league, would you have been happy ? Or would you have been thinking WTF we may as well stay with Houllier! (dont mention his signings :p  )

No-one is arguing about the cups being great Rafa, just that the league has been disappointing.

5th, 3rd, 3rd.

If we can agree that our league form hasn't improved much since Houllier, the distinguishing feature therefore is the greatest European Cup final win of all time, the greatest FA cup win of all time and another European Cup final.

I think that is some DISTINGUISHING feature!

Well actually we finished 5th, 3rd and 3rd didn't we S@int?  :D

Last year we SHOULD of won the league mate. And without the Chelsea factor I think we would of. The thing is Rafa gets us Champions league football every year , something that was never a certainty under Houllier. Also Houllier did not have Chelsea to contend with. Man Utd and Chelsea have both spent more than us in the last 2 years by buying considerably better quality (and a lot more expensive) players.

Hopefully with our new owners, we are on a even field now mate.

And the Champions League is the crem de la crem mate. Just because we've been there 2 out of 3 seasons some people are dismissing the greatness of this acheivment. If Rafa wins it, we have equalled Man U's whole European record in 3 seasons under Rafa.

How often do teams win this trophy? Not often.

Rafa's the man.

I think OUR LEAGUE FORM HAS IMPROVED though.

How many times under Houllier did absolute sh.ite teams come to Anfield and get a win. Ipswich done it, Watford done it, a LOT of sh.ite teams came here and took all the points. THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN UNDER RAFA.

I would agree with that Rafa, but what I am saying is that, at the very least if people don't believe our league form hasn't improved then the cups make a clear distinction in our improvement. I think you are right about our league form, our home form was nowhere near as solid and consistent as it was under Houllier, we never achieved champions league football every season under him aswell, it is our away form that has let us down. This combined with the fact that the premier league is much stronger now than it was under Houllier, partly due to Chelsea's financial clout, is partly the reason we haven't faired as well as we'd have hoped. The financial deficit bewteen us and the top two is also something that sets the standard so high in terms of winning the league.

I have a question.

In Souness or Houllier eras I watched the games I could, but didn't have the chance of reading/hearing fans of Liverpool as I hadn't bothered to enter any football forum until 3 years ago (in the RS forum I joined in 2005, not in 2004!).

So, questions:

Under the Houllier or Souness era, was winning the premiership one of the goals and expectations? I know that a club with the history of LFC always expects more, but did you reallistically with the men you had at the moment expect winning the league at the start of the season?

I think much of the "unrest" about our league position is precisely that WE EXPECTED to have serious chances to win it.

When I joined this forum, I don't recall such expectations, correct me if I'm wrong. And expectations come when you see a team growing.

If I am honest I would willingly swop this seasons CL final for the League title. I was brought up with Liverpool winning leagues. We are/should be  so much more than just a cup team, even if it is the biggest cup.

The convincing finals are never the best, at least Rafa got us there, and got us there with an incredibly depleted squad against some of the best teams in Europe.

Under Houllier we probably a) wouldn't have got there in the first place and b) probably wouldn't have come back from 3 down against AC Milan.

The league's all about money now. Thats why this investment was so badly needed.

When Rafa came here, Arsenal, Chelsea and United were all considered better than us by a mile. Rafa's slowly but surely closed the gap on the big three and now the media call us the big four.

As I said before, I truly believe without Chelsea being bought by Roman, Rafa would of won the league last year.

Next season I expect a real push for the title and then I'll find this thread and put a big fu.cking smiley face in it  :D

We've always expected to win the league Sabre, we genuinely have, sometimes it has been misplaced hope over the years but it has ALWAYS been the expectation.

I agree fully mate and I expect EVERY OTHER TRUE RED would say the same. The Leagues the bread and butter. Its the holy grail and I won't be completely happy until I've seen Stevie G lift it above his head.

However when you take a step back and look at what Rafa has acheived since he has been here, you have got to believe he is the man to finally bring it back home.

I wasn't lucky enough to grow up with Liverpool winning title after title. My first game, we lost 1 - 0 at home to Sheff United when they were absolutely terrible. Growing up around Mancs and bluenoses wasn't easy as a kid. I was alive but the 80's was just a decade too early for me. I remember us losing to the Mancs in 96, and that was about my only highlight as a fan in the 90's. Houllier came along and did a good job and nearly won us the league in 2002, but he didn't have the know how to progress beyond that. The club backed him, very heavliy in the transfer market but he could not make that extra step up for us. Rafa can.

I read an interview, well actually someone told me yesterday about an interview that Carra did the other day where he said that when people look back on the 2000's in 20 years time, they will say it was a golden generation. Look at how good we've been in the cups. We've practically won a trophy every year. At this time, something special is going on with Liverpool, and WHEN we get the league title back, it will cap off a brilliant decade.

I dont think anyone is trying to say Houllier was a great manager, which is why we are so disappointed that our league positions arn't much better under Benitez.

We never won the Cl under Shankly but no one doubts he was a great manager...... because he won League titles.

I don't doubt Benitez mate, I just wish he would hurry up  :D
