Whats the golden boot won for in the Brazilian league, obviously most of the time its for top goalscorer, but is that the case in their league ?
Only asking as it would be very unlikely that a centre midfielder and one who is described as a defensive midfielder...would finish top scorer in the whole league.

Rafa quote on.tv:

"He can play as a holding midfielder but he can also get from box to box and so I am looking forward to seeing him score goals for Liverpool in the future.

I think the golden boot is for best player in the league.

At least the post of the page!

Thas list is impressive, from Elias Figueroa, to Mauro Silva, Romario, Kaka... chances are that we've signed a great player.

Not all of the list impressed afterwards (Giovanni was just OK in my book) but that list is fúcking impressive.

hmmm.. sounds like a good signing imo.

still not sure of his position tho... he's a dm in fm2007, but rafa said that he will get a few goals, and in that vid he looks quite an attacking player.  ???

imo he would play very well in the amc position in a 4231.

btw, it's going to be difficult telling him and voronin apart sometimes  :D

I really dont think he will play as a defensive midfielder in Liverpool, at least when I've seen him he did not seem too defensive. He would be more like Gerrard, not as physical but versatile. I hope he plays as an attacking midfielder sicne he can bring that brazilian flair into the game :P

So, it appears that while the supporters all dream of a team of Carraghers, Rafa dreams of a team of central midfielders. ???  This kid sounds like a prospect but if his arrival is down to the fact that one of our other CMs--and you know which one I'm most concerned with :D --is leaving, I will not be a happy chappy. :no

I posted this in the rumor thread when this was still a rumour but I think it's still relevant. I wouldn't worry too much about Alonso, I think Sissoko is on the way out....

Rafa has said before that he sees Alonso as an "attacking" central midfielder. The purchase of a new defensive CM would, in my opinion, put more pressure on Sissoko than Alonso.

The Alonso contract situation is worrying though. If he can indeed buy his own contract out at the end of the season then all these stories of swap deals involving Etoo would appear to be false.

I think Rafa wants Alonso to stay and Alonso wants to stay, this whole situation is just brinkmanship regarding the length and size of his new contract.

Personally a midfield made up of a combination of any of the four remaining players - Gerrard, Mascherano, Alonso or Lucas - would be capable of doing a job. Whereas if you replace Alonso with Sissoko it looks too negative...

This whole summer is going to be very strange as we won't know exactly Rafa has in store until the end of August. In Rafa we (must) trust
:)

Excuse me Inglis5, the bit about Rafa seeing Alonso as an attacking midfielder petrified me.  :oh:

When and where did he say that? I'd love to see the context!

LFC2007 dispelled the other day my doubts in another post about Alonso, when he wrote that Alonso said I want to win the premiership and he'll stay. WHen both sides of the story want to understand, the agreement is a matter of time.

We're going to lose probably Zenden, and if this is the replacement it seems we are in the good way to improve a squad, remove the weak link, include an (apparently) strong player.

Well, according to this, both Alonso and Sissoko are still part of Rafa's plans for next season:

Alonso still a key player - Benitez May 9 2007

by Ian Doyle, Liverpool Daily Post

XABI ALONSO has been reassured he remains an integral part of Rafael Benitez’s plans.

Alonso was surprisingly dropped to the bench for the Champions League semi-final second leg victory over Chelsea at Anfield last week.

The 26-year-old, who had previously started all of Liverpool’s key games under Benitez when available, was usurped from central midfield by Javier Mascherano and Steven Gerrard.

It sparked fresh rumours of a move away from Anfield, with Barcelona known suitors of the Spain international.

While Alonso eventually played a part in helping Liverpool seal a place in the Athens final against AC Milan by scoring in the penalty shoot-out against Chelsea, a fit Momo Sissoko didn’t even feature among the substitutes.

But Benitez reckons both midfielders accept the competition for places and will play a part for Liverpool next season.

“I think Xabi understands,” said the Liverpool manager. “The players they know me.

“They know I can change one or two players but that doesn't mean I am disappointed with them.

“I was talking with Sissoko. The last two or three weeks he has had more problems because Mascherano was playing well and Gerrard was in the middle.

“I said to him it was not a problem because we will play 60 games next season and we need a lot of good players. We have injuries also.

“All the players must be a little bit disappointed if they don't play, but they need to have respect for their team-mates. Xabi is a good professional and it is not a problem.”

Correct me if im wrong but Rafa said that Alonso was the only defensive midfielder we had when Mascherano came, and said that it was the only place on the field there was no competition and that Javier would put some pressure on Xabi. As I said before, I doubt that Lucas will play a defensive role, as I see him more like Gerrard, where if he played in a defensive role we would not be taking advantage of his skills. He is probably the replacement for Zenden as sabre stated.
