Fowler's off - Farewell to a legend

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Bad Bob » Fri May 11, 2007 12:39 pm

As most of us suspected, Fowler's contract will not be renewed come the end of the season.  On the upside, he will start on Sunday and may yet play a role in Athens.  All the best God--your second coming was one of the highlights of last year's campaign and here's hoping to see you involved with the club in a different capacity in the near future.

Fowler's message to the Kop

May 11 2007

by Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

Robbie Fowler

ROBBIE FOWLER today thanked The Kop for making his second spell at Anfield even more memorable than his first, but vowed: “I haven’t finished at Liverpool yet.”

The striker has been told his contract won’t be renewed at the end of the season, which means his appearance at Anfield on Sunday will be his last in a red shirt.

Rafa Benitez has promised Fowler a start in the game, and it’s an opportunity he fully intends making the most of.

“Obviously it will be an emotional day for me, but I want everyone to know I’m still completely focused on what I see as two very important games,” said Fowler.

“First I want to play well and win against Charlton to help us finish in third, and then there’s preparing for and hopefully playing a part in the Champions League final.

“ I’ll think about everything else after that because I don’t want anything to interfere with such an important match.

“ I also want people to know I’ve not even thought about the future beyond Liverpool. The manager explained the situation to me this week and it wasn’t a big surprise, to be honest.

“But everyone knows I’ve treated every game back at Liverpool in exactly the same way and given all I could for the team, and that’s going to be the case in the last two games as well.”

However, Fowler admits the chance to say goodbye to the supporters will be appreciated after a less than satisfactory ‘farewell’ performance in 2001.

“At least this time I will get a chance to say goodbye properly because I was gutted the way it happened last time,” he said.

“Since I’ve been back, the support I’ve had from the fans has been tremendous. It’s been even better than it was first time around.

“Maybe you appreciate it even more when you’ve been away and missed it so much, but I’ll never forget the reception they gave me and will always be thankful for it. I just hope I can finish with a few goals and a Champions League win.

“That would be the perfect way to end the season.”

Manager Benitez thanked Fowler for his contribution over the last 18 months and predicted he’d bow out in familiar fashion.

“I hope Robbie can score a goal in front of The Kop. That would be a good way for him to say goodbye to the supporters,” he said.

“I want to say thank you to Robbie. He will play on Sunday and it’s good the fans will have a chance to see him at Anfield before he leaves us.

“We had a good meeting and he understood the situation. He’s been a good signing for us and, of course, there are still two games left so his time at Liverpool is not over yet.

“I know how much he means to the club and the fans so it will be a special day for him on Sunday.”

Many fans are hoping to galvanise support for a ‘Fowler Day’ of celebrations at Anfield on Sunday in tribute to the number nine.

Legend, could have been one of the greatest strikers ever to lace up boots but for his injury against Everton. Deserves a great send off and a goal. I am sad to see him go, but better that than see him struggling against players who arn't fit to lace his boots. Certainly could have been used more this season , but has still shown glimpses of his class when he has had the opportunity.

I'd love to see him get a couple in front of the Kop on Sunday and the idea of him scoring the winner in Athens gives me chills (while recognizing that the kinds of situations requiring Rafa to call on Robbie in Athens probably won't be good for the ticker!).  Absolutely love this lad! :buttrock

Gutted, but as Robbie himself has said its no surprise, Rafa has other ideas and wants different things from his striker.
Robbie is the greatest striker i have seen live, i watched Rush but near the end of his career. I have so many amazing memories of Fowler and he helped light up the 90's when we were really struggling to stay near the top.

I think its great that it has been announced prior to the game and that he will definately play, it gives the fans the chance to get some flags and banners sorted and give the man the send off he deserves and missed out on last time round.

Viva Fowler!!

Lionheart wrote a couple or three weeks ago in the rumour mill I think that he might go to Australia to end his career. Before that, I heard that he might go to America. Any news about his future?

He doesn't deserve a goal, he deserves a fúcking hat trick :)

:(

At least this time around he'll get to say a proper goodbye, to the Anfield faithful. After reading his autobiography I think that really grated him. In the way he left and didnt say goodbye properly the first time around.

The bloke alongside Shearer IMHO was the best striker in England and arguably Europe during the 90's and was an absolute pleasure to watch.

Fowler is a top class finisher, and he is the best I have seen since the great Ian Rush, he will greatly missed in LFC.  He could have go on for another three more years, but for the injuries he had over the passed years. I always get a joy in watching him play only in Liverpool's shirt.

I hope LFC will accommodate Fowler in some sort of capacity to use his experiences to improve our finishing, which have been lacking since his early departure, We have not been able to find another Fowler, or Rush.

The best luck for the future Mr. Fowler.

Absolute legend, my all-time favourite player, and the best finisher of his generation by a country mile.
If Robbie couldn't score it, no f*cker could.

I for one will shed a tear when he pulls on that shirt for the last time, and wish him the very best for the future, and hope he stays at the club in a different capacity.

The lad should have a job here for life.

Robert Bernard Fowler- I salute you.  :bowdown  :bowdown  :buttrock  :bowdown  :bowdown

I still think he should get a contract, as cover for injuries and to play some role for the club. I reckon he will go off towards a weaker league to earn a bit of easy cash and carry on playing for a bit

Superlatives fail me for this lad! In his prime he was up there with the best of them.
I will never forget the goal he scored at O.T against Scmeichel in that 2-2 draw. :bowdown
In an era when we were spoiled rotten in terms of strikers, sometimes you dont miss it until it isnt there.
As everyone says -I hope he has a blinder on Saturday!!

the liverpool website has created a mosaic for the last game of the season. It should just spell out the name GOD on the kop.

Could you imagiine that it would look awesome.

Robbie was class not my favourite cos i thought owen was special. But in the end robbie's love for the club has shone thru and he'll be remembered as a legend whereas owen won't due to his love of England before Liverpool. Thats because he went to lilleshall and robbie, carra and stevie didn't.

I salute you robbie.

PS:  Come on in the 85th min and grab a late winner in athens and we will truly have dreams of songs to sing. Make us Dream Rob! xxx
