I think it highlights the tragedy of the innocence of youth contrasted drastically with the harsh realities of adulthood in an ever colder and cynical world based on instant pleasure and the excesses of money and gratifiction. It strikes Manhattan as not being amusing in the least, but rather brings a sense of sadness and hopelessness to Manhattan's thoughts and all you bastardos should be ashamed of yourselves for laughing at the purity of womanhood being corrupted.
