Do you think he's flirting with us ?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Samuel Eto'o has revealed his admiration for Liverpool, but claims he is not looking to leave Barcelona.

The Cameroonian is one of the most highly regarded strikers in world football, but his future at Barcelona has been shrouded in doubt for much of the season.

He had public fall out with Barca coach Frank Rijkaard and it was claimed in March that Eto'o had been offered to clubs in the Premiership.

This was swiftly denied by Eto'o's advisors, but the forward has added fuel to the fire by admitting he is a fan of Liverpool.

"I like Liverpool's courage," he is quoted as saying in Four Four Two Magazine. "They have a big red heart. They showed that against us. We did not underestimate them.

"You have to recognise that in the two games, Liverpool played extremely well. They defend well and are organised.

"I like Gerrard. He runs a lot. He does everything well.

"Gerrard is the best English player. No, change that, at the moment he is the best player in England."

Eto'o admits to being a fan of English football, but claims he is not looking to leave Barcelona.

"I watch English football," he added. "I like the crowd because it is always close to the pitch and the stadiums are always full.

"We played at Anfield and it was very loud, with lots of different songs. I like that. Football is different in England. It has a place in English hearts."

Commenting on his own future, he added: "I have a contract here until 2010 and I am happy with that."

Eto'o is a huge fan of Thierry Henry and Spanish daily El Mundo Deportivo claims Barca are considering making a summer bid for the Arsenal striker, having come close to landing him last year

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has refused to rule out a move for Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o.

Eto'o revealed earlier this week his admiration for Liverpool and Reds skipper Steven Gerrard after being impressed by them in the two UEFA Champions League clashes between the two sides earlier this season.

The Cameroon star's future at Barcelona has been the subject of speculation after a bust-up with coach Frank Rijkaard with reports suggesting he could be on his way out of Camp Nou in the summer.

Liverpool have been linked with Eto'o as they are expected to try and bring in a new striker in the summer and Benitez has admitted he is a fan of the African hit-man.

"Samuel is very clever, normally everyone wants to play alongside Steven (Gerrard) or Xabi (Alonso)," said Benitez. "But we can talk about players in the next few months.

"But Samuel Eto'o is a good player, and so is Stevie. It would be normal they would want to play together.

"But it is just speculation, at the moment it means nothing."

Benitez is focusing his attention of tying down his top stars to new deals to ward off any potential exits from Anfield.

The likes of Gerrard, Alonso and Jamie Carragher are all expected to be offered lucrative new deals in a bid to keep them at the club for the foreseeable future.

Benitez has admitted the club are talking to several players about new contracts.

"We are talking now to the players," added Benitez.

Jose Reina is one of the players keen on signing a new deal and the Spaniard is hoping to have talks with the club's new owners soon as he believes the future looks bright for Liverpool

"We will be speaking to the new owners over the next few days, but I've said many times now I'm really happy at Liverpool and I want to extend my contract," Reina told the Liverpool Echo.

"The key for any growing team is not only to improve with new players, but also to make sure the key players and the spine of the side stays together. Then you can build an even stronger team around this. That spine is here at Liverpool.

"The project will be to build a team which is massive and can win many things.

"The new owners have said before they make transfers they first of all want to prepare new deals. Then I'm sure they will think about the summer. At this moment, the future looks brilliant.

"I've not met the owners yet, but I'm sure it will happen soon."

Well is he ?

Possibly not but there are two articles there, and it definately looks to me as if Eto is keeping his options open. And Rafa isnt exactly doing anything to refuse speculation.

I remeber a few years back when we we're apparently interested in him when Houllier was here. Saying something about the English weather and how it would put him off, well I can understand that being an African and living in Spain. So I thought he'd never end up here, not just because of that but like most footballers these days isnt he known a bit for being a mercinary I doubt back then we'd of had the finacial clout to pay him a weekly wage that would make him happy. Now though as it seems we probably would have the money that could possibly persuade him.

I dont know all this could be nonsense and nothing may come of it. But if he were ever to leave Barca would it be for England ? Possibly as he claims he likes the crowds and stadiums. Arsenal were mentioned also, if Barca were to sell him would they want the Gunners Henry in return, or even our Alonso or would they take the money. Who knows but its being brought up often enough, if Rafa does rate him maybe he should pull out the stops to land him, afterall he is the kind of quality that we're as fans this summer are wanting.

Woudln't read much into it, the 4-4-2 interview was most likely about our recent tie with them and he gave his honest opinion about our club, players, fans etc.

I doubt he'll be a Red next season, but that being said it would be a huge coo if Rafa got him.

Agents use interested clubs to negotiate better contracts , put pressure on managers to treat players better etc. Hope I am wrong but that is what I think is happening at the moment. If Eto'o doesnt get the right answers from Barca maybe we might have chance. Always nice to see top players saying positive things about Liverpool tho'

Remember the whole Figo transfer to Real was the result of just one online poll on the clubs website so anything is possible.

Although I still doubt he will be a Liverpool player next season.

It's certainly a tantilising proposition to think that he could be wearing the liverpool shirt next season as there are few more prolific strikers out there at the moment. I do believe that there IS a realistic chance of him being available in the summer. There has been a lot of behind the scenes politics going on this season at Barca and I think that in the summer a lot of this is going to come to a head. Naturally this is all based on media reports  ??? but Graham Hunter on Sky Sports' la liga coverage has stated on a number of occasions that not only has there been the problem between Eto'o and Rijkaard but also Eto'o has had a bit of a falling out with Ronaldinho. There is a belief that one of the two will leave barcelona this summer and in recent days Joan Laporte (Barcelona President) has confirmed that Ronaldinho will be staying put. Read into this information what you want to but it could just be that come the start of next season we may have Samuel Eto'o pulling on the Liverpool number 9 shirt.

Then again we might not!!!   :p  :D

Obviously not seen a game at Goodison or Villa Park then? Can't be that much of a fan.  :D

He has recently stated that he doesn't bring his kids to Spanish stadiums, as some of them sing racists chants.

If that's one of his concerns, and I find it very understandable, he might be planning go to another league. And player agents around here say that the english premier league wages are the most succulent right now

Samuel Eto is a class player theres no doubt about that but is he really an LFC type of player?

It seems to me his ego is massive and he is as arrogant as they come. His recent bitchfest at Barca with Ronaldinhio has made me think a bit about if he would be good for us!

What exactly did they fall out over,it looks like it was a battle of ego's more than anything or a whos the main man battle!None of us know the facts but whatever the reality is,it was not an advertisement for his attitude. Also he was told to play and refused...this may be a case of the management rushing him back too soon. But the the bottom line is a player who is paid around £100,000 a week should do waht he is told regardless of his opinion on the matter and worry about complaining after!

I just cant imagine Raffa saying to Carra you are playing tonight and Carra saying no boss i still have a niggle...he'd be fighting to get on the pitch,we all know that...Thats why he is the player he is!

Does Eto really have the right mindset, attitude and passion to play for LFC!Would he be happy at being just another player?
Would he be happy being rotated?
I think no to all the above...therefore would he be good in our dressing room..good for team morale.
I doubt it and am starting to think we should let him 'flirt with us' all he wants...I think we should look elsewhere,i dont think Raffa will sign him anyway!

sometimes you need that arrogance, and usally it has to be from a striker, someone who can say give me the ball and i will score and win us this game

eto fits the bill he is arrogant but unlike alot of other players has the ability to back it up

Of course I don't know him, but based on the things he says to the press and the discussions he had both In Real Madrid B, Mallorca and Barcelona, I'd say, Barry

Does Eto really have the right mindset, attitude and passion to play for LFC!

Mindset yes, he's not one that chickens out in a big club. He has winning mentality
Passion, yes, definitely.
Attitude, No, see below.

Would he be happy at being just another player?

No, he needs to be important, but at the same time, he's a tough worker.

Would he be happy being rotated?

No. He warned to Rijkaard publicly he wouldn't want to be rotated.

I think no to all the above...therefore would he be good in our dressing room..good for team morale.
I doubt it and am starting to think we should let him 'flirt with us' all he wants...I think we should look elsewhere,i dont think Raffa will sign him anyway!

I think that Rafa knows he's not the easiest man to have on the dressroom, but I'm not so sure he wouldn't take that risk

Sorry to bring this up now and I know Graham Hunter isn't the greatest journalist in the world but he was on newstalk last night (Irish radio) and was specifically asked about eto'o to anfield. He said that the quotes about liking Liverpool came from an interview before the champs league game against barca and that they were meant as complimentary towards the opposition more than anything.

He said there is no chance of eto'o signing for us as he will cost more than likely at least €70m (I think thats 40m quid). He said if he goes anywhere it will be to chelsea as he has been talking to chelsea scouts and board members and he is who they want. As far as I'm concerned this is b#llocks, unless they sell Shevchenko or Drogba.

He then went onto say rafa should go for the Milito brothers which made me think he is completely off his rocker. Milito the striker may have scores 16 La Liga goals this season but I for one have never really seen the guy play. As for Milito the defender, we were linked with him in the past before we signed Agger. Water under the bridge as far as I'm concerned.

Im glad to hear that if its true and more than just talk on the radio!

Its easy to look at a player and see his quality on the pitch and want him...but Raffa im sure is looking deeper than just his goals! He does not sound like the type of player who would fit in...quite the opposite me thinks,i reckon he might upset a sweetly sailing ship!

Let him go to Chelsea...hope he has as much success as Ballack and Shevchenko!
